‘The Pitt’ star Isa Briones loves the discourse around Dr. Santos: ‘I just want people to feel something viscerally’
Image
Isa Briones knows you love to hate her character, Dr. Trinity Santos, on The Pitt. And she wouldn't have it any other way.

"Honestly, I love it," she tells Gold Derby. "At first, people were like, 'Oh, is that hard?' But I don't know. When you're an actor, just making people have a reaction, that's your job. I don't need anyone to like me. I just want people to feel something viscerally, and clearly they do because people have a lot of opinions. And I think it's fun. I think it's fun to see the discourse of all the differing opinions about her and about her and Langdon (Patrick Ball) and everything. It's been it's been very cool to see ... when that whole arc happened, seeing people kind of go through that."

That whole arc started near the midpoint of the season when Santos suspected that Dr. Frank Langdon,...

Video: Isa Briones and AnnaSophia Robb Are Pulling an All Nighter Off-Broadway
Image
Earlier this week, Isa Briones and AnnaSophia Robb joined the cast of All Nighter- the new play written by Natalie Margolin and directed by Jaki Bradley. "I think this play feels like such a truthful depiction of that time in your life when your friends are your everything," Briones told BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge. "You don't quite have a sense of self yet, but you know where you belong in a group- how important that is. And that cocoon breaking and being like, 'I think it's time to be my own person now.' How scary that is!" It’s finals week at a small liberal arts college in rural Pennsylvania. A tight-knit group of roommates pull one last all-nighter to complete their final assignments. Holed up...

Trump-Appointed Judge Rules Deportation Push Is Unlawful
Image
A federal judge in Texas has ruled that the Trump administration’s invocation of the Alien Enemies Act in order to deport undocumented migrants without due process is unlawful because the act is predicated on an organized, armed act of war, or other violent action against the United States — none of which are currently happening.

In a Thursday ruling, District Court Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. found that “an ‘invasion’ or ‘predatory incursion’” as stated in the Alien Enemies Act (Aea) must involve an “organized, armed force entering the United States...

‘Wasting Judicial Resources’: Judge Shreds Trump Admin’s Alien Enemies Act Case
Image
Immigration and Customs Enforcement released a Venezuelan couple Friday after a federal judge in Texas ruled that the Trump administration’s handling of their case did not have a “lawful basis.”

U.S. District Judge David Briones of El Paso wrote in a searing ruling that Ice had not demonstrated convincing evidence that Julio Cesar Sanchez Puentes and Luddis Norelia Sanchez Garcia, who were detained for nine days, are members of the Tren de Aragua gang and are therefore “alien enemies.”

This is the first case in which a judge...

From The White Lotus to The Pitt, Nepo Babies Are Proving Their Worth
Image
Once upon a time, the phrase “nepo baby” was seen as derogatory.

Coined by combining the words “nepotism” and “baby,” it means the subject is a child of influential people in an industry and has (allegedly) benefited from these connections.

Nepo babies who wanted to go into the same field as their parents would go to great lengths to hide their privilege. Some would even change their names to avoid outing themselves.

(Fabio Lovino/HBO)

The name is still not a term of endearment to some extent, but a current crop of nepo babies is challenging this stigma.

The actors in this list have proven that being the child of a talented performer should not be used as a metric to discount someone, and everyone should be judged by their work.

This list focuses on their work on television, but some have ventured beyond the medium and are killing it in music and film.

All the ‘Nepo Babies’ on ‘The Pitt’ and Their Famous Parents
Image
The talented cast of “The Pitt” includes a number of actors whose parents are also in the business. While Taylor Dearden and Fiona Dourif might, technically be considered “nepo babies,” they have more than proven themselves to be as hardworking as their emergency room characters in the hit drama on HBO’s Max.

Here is who’s related to who and where else you might have seen them before this. Some, like Dourif and Isa Briones, who plays Trinity Santos, have even acted alongside their famous family members.

Taylor Dearden

The 32-year-old actress, who plays resident Mel King on the series, is the daughter of “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston and actress Robin Dearden, whose TV credits include appearances on “Murder, She Wrote,” and the soap opera “Generations.” She previously starred on Netflix’s “American Vandal,” MTV’s “Sweet/Vicious” and Apple’s “For All Mankind.”

The One Item Banned From The Pitt Set, According To Isa Briones
Image
There isn't a more brutally intense show on television at the moment than "The Pitt." Created by R. Scott Gemmill, the hospital drama makes "ER" look like "Dr. Kildare" with its ferocious onslaught of calamity and shockingly graphic medical gore. There's never been anything quite like this show on television, which is why everyone who's currently watching it won't stop bugging you to join its rapidly growing legion of fans.

"The Pitt" was always destined to earn scads of eyeballs, at least initially, on Max due to Noah Wyle doing a Ptsd riff on his Dr. John Carter character from "ER." He's never been better, but it's really the phenomenal supporting cast and wildly perilous situations that have turned the show into a is-it-Thursday-yet viewing sensation. Oh, and Crosby the dog. Crosby's a big deal (especially when you find out he was named after the legendarily mercurial musician David Crosby...

The Pitt Star Isa Briones Played Multiple Star Trek Characters Before Dr. Santos
Image
Before she was hunting for patients to cut up, threatening sexual predators, and exposing medicine-stealing doctors on Max's high-octane medical drama "The Pitt," the actor behind certified wild child Dr. Santos had a hugely important role -- or, rather, four roles -- in the "Star Trek" universe.

Isa Briones has had a major moment with "The Pitt," playing one of the most love-her-or-hate-her characters on the new, fantastic, and Stephen King-approved HBO series. Her Dr. Trinity Santos is one of a batch of interns trying to get through their first day on the job in the emergency medical department of a Pittsburgh hospital, but where the other young doctors-in-training are nervous or hesitant, she's brash and ambitious.

It's hard not to empathize with Santos, but it's also difficult not to scream at the television when she makes truly mind-boggling decisions. Briones plays her character's many shades well, and you'd...

Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center intern Trinity Santos is among the most divisive TV characters in recent memory — but portrayer Isa Briones doesn’t mind. In fact, she relishes it.

Robert Beltran Refused To Return As Chakotay For This Star Trek: Picard Storyline
Image
Although "Star Trek: Voyager" concluded in 2001, multiple characters from the series have returned throughout the franchise at large to remind Trekkies that they all still exist and are still going about their Starfleet careers. Both Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Tuvok (Tim Russ) appeared on "Star Trek: Picard," with the former playing a regular role on the series. The reference-heavy "Star Trek: Lower Decks" makes "Voyager" references all the time, and even had an episode set on board the U.S.S. Voyager.

Most notably, Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) not only had a cameo in the 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis," but a holographic version of the character played a large role in the animated series "Star Trek: Prodigy." That same show also featured the real-life Janeway, the Doctor (Robert Picardo), as well as a subplot involving Chakotay (Robert Beltran), the captain of the experimental ship the U.S.S.

Why Star Trek: Picard cut its original actors for season three of the series
Image
When season three of Star Trek: Picard began, there were some missing faces. Some, we didn't expect to see as their stories wrapped up in season two, like Captain Cristobal Rios [Santiago Carbrera] who chose to remain the past. Isa Briones's Soji character only returned briefly for season two and Briones played an entirely different character who ended up going with Wil Wheaton's Traveler. We're not quite sure what happened to Evan Evagora's Elnor, but Allison Pill's Dr. Agnes Jurati joined with the Borg Queen who became a benevolent form...at least for that queen.

The only original actor, who appeared in the first episode of the first season, alongside Patrick Stewart, to return in season three was Raffi [Michelle Hurd]. Though Jeri Ryan did appear in season one of Picard, she wasn't there from the beginning. Hurd has already spoken out about how it was heartbreaking for her...

Rooney Mara is Under Pressure in First Trailer for Alonso Ruizpalacios’ La Cocina
Image
While we ponder how exactly the fiasco surrounding Todd Haynes’ would-be next film is going down in the household of Joaquin Phoenix and Carol star Rooney Mara, the latter actor’s latest role is now opening next month. Alonso Ruizpalacios’ La Cocina, starring Mara and Raúl Briones, premiered at Berlinale earlier this year, followed by Tribeca, and will screen at the London Film Festival in October. Ahead of an October 25 theatrical release beginning at NYC’s Angelika, the first trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis: “La Cocina captures the frenetic energy of the lunch rush at The Grill, a bustling restaurant in Manhattan’s Times Square. When money goes missing from the till, suspicion falls on Pedro (Briones), an undocumented cook who dreams of a better life and is in love with Julia (Mara), an American waitress who cannot commit to a relationship. It Was Heartbreaking: Michelle Hurd Breaks Down Losing Star Trek: Picard Actors Between Seasons 2 & 3
Image
Filming three seasons of Star Trek: Picard back-to-back was grueling, but Michelle Hurd found joy in working with the iconic Next Generation cast. Losing Isa Briones, Allison Pill, Santiago Cabrera, and Evan Evagora after season 2 was heartbreaking for the Star Trek: Picard cast. Michelle Hurd's character Raffi Musiker remains the only original Star Trek: Picard character to appear in all three seasons, but season 3 brought back Tng cast to critical acclaim.

Michelle Hurd breaks down the differences in filming Star Trek: Picard's three seasons, and how "heartbreaking" it was to lose actors Isa Briones, Allison Pill, Santiago Cabrera, and Evan Evagora after season 2. Hurd played the troubled but resilient Commander Raffi Musiker, who is the only original Star Trek: Picard character to appear in all three seasons. Of course, Star Trek: Picard season 3 reunited the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation to critical and audience acclaim.

La Cocina

Directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios

Sales WME Independent, Fifth Season

From Anthony Bourdain giving American readers an inside look at the rock ’n’ roll restaurant industry in Kitchen Confidential to Nancy Meyers’ citrus-dotted white marble countertops in enviable home kitchens, modern American audiences have had an infatuation with cookery. Though previously largely reserved for the nonfiction space with entries like Bourdain’s No Reservations and Netflix’s operatic Chef’s Table, the narrative possibilities of the dark underbelly of back-of-house restaurant staff have began to emerge lately. The Bear, the anxiety-inducing FX series about a Chicago Italian beef joint, swept the Emmys in January and is poised to do the same this go-around. Enter director Ruizpalacios’ La Cocina. “Think The Bear on cocaine with a Red Bull chaser...

Every Star Trek: Picard Character Played By Isa Briones
Image
Isa Briones portrayed multiple characters in Star Trek: Picard, including Dahj and Soji, Data's "daughters." Briones' characters faced trauma from their creators and played vital roles in saving the galaxy with Jean-Luc Picard. Kore Soong, another character played by Briones, was the inspiration for the synthetic beings in the late 24th century.

Isa Briones played multiple characters in Star Trek: Picard, and she was the youngest cast member of the Star Trek series led by Sir Patrick Stewart. Star Trek: Picard picked up the story of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) nearly 20 years after audiences last saw him as Captain of the USS Enterprise-e in Star Trek: Nemesis. In Picard's first two seasons, Jean-Luc's return to saving the galaxy saw him surround himself with a new, motley crew of misfits, with Isa Briones' characters among them.

The immensely talented Isa Briones was just 20 years old when she signed...

‘La Cocina’ Review: Rooney Mara in Explosive Account of Immigrant Restaurant Workers Chasing the American Dream
Image
There’s a surging life force felt in every scene of Alonso Ruizpalacios’ superbly acted La Cocina — at times ebullient but more often on edge, if not careening dangerously toward disaster or violence. Think The Bear on cocaine with a Red Bull chaser and you get some idea of the sustained intensity and simmering pressure of this bruising tragicomedy about what the diners (mostly) don’t see during a working day in a busy Times Square restaurant.

The Mexican writer-director has style to burn, evident in the intoxicatingly textured black-and-white visuals, the livewire editing and the striking use of music, from solemn choral pieces to cacophonous jazz. Even if he takes too long wrapping up an overwrought climactic crescendo, this is a compelling vision of the immigrant experience as a hellish limbo in which even the seeming ballast of community, brotherhood and love can be illusory.

In his previous films Güeros,...

‘La Cocina’ Review: Alonso Ruizpalacios Sharpens the Knives for This Look Inside a Chaotic New York Kitchen
Image
Before demonstrating himself to be one of Mexico’s most original and exciting new filmmaking talents, Alonso Ruizpalacios washed dishes in a bustling big-city kitchen. That experience informs every second of the “Museo” director’s fourth feature, “La Cocina,” a thrilling in-spirit adaptation of Arnold Wesker’s 1957 play “The Kitchen,” transposed from midcentury London to modern-day New York.

A chaotic symphony of nearly two dozen characters, this black-and-white indie confection (garnished with sparing touches of color) mixes biting social critique with stylistic bravura. The setting is in the guts of a high-volume midtown Manhattan restaurant called The Grill — a hectic pressure cooker where personal and professional concerns come to a boil.

The food looks edible at best, and a lot less enticing after we’ve witnessed the commotion that goes into preparing it. In Ruizpalacios’ version, practically the entire staff — not Rooney Mara’s pregnant waitress, but the ones touching the food,...

Alonso Ruizpalacios Vies for a Golden Bear with his Kitchen Drama ‘La Cocina’ With Rooney Mara
Image
Inspired by Arnold Wesker’s 1957 stage play, “The Kitchen,” Alonso Ruizpalacios’ “La Cocina” dives deep into the bowels of the industrial-size kitchen of a restaurant in New York City’s Times Square where food is churned out to serve throngs of diners, mostly tourists.

For Ruizpalacios, whose feature debut, “Güeros,” won the best first feature award at the Berlinale nearly 10 years ago, “La Cocina” (“The Kitchen”) is basically an anti-food-porn movie. “I wanted to show the other side of the food industry where expediency is more important than the quality of the food. It’s a metaphor for corporate capitalism,” he says.

The story takes place at the fictional The Grill in Manhattan, where cash has gone missing from the register. All the undocumented cooks, hailing from a diversity of countries, are placed under scrutiny, particularly Pedro (Raúl Briones), who is already on the line for his troublemaking.

Pedro is...

Berlin Hot List: Films With Margot Robbie, Cillian Murphy, Dave Bautista, Tilda Swinton Hit the Market
Image
Battered by disappointing markets at Toronto and AFM, both of which were held under the shadow of the actors strike, buyers and sellers are looking to Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM), which runs Feb. 15-21, to re-energize the indie business. The outlook, coming out of Sundance, is good.

“The difference in Sundance from last year to this was extreme, there were a lot more deals being down, both by distributors and streamers,” says Janina Vislmaier, head of sales at Protagonist Pictures, which screened The Outrun with Saoirse Ronan and Sasquatch Sunset with Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg in Park City, both of which will screen at the EFM. “Everyone is really excited ahead of Berlin, especially because all the buyers are back, including from Asia, which is a really good sign.”

The end of the SAG and WGA strikes hasn’t, yet, delivered the flood of new projects and packages many had predicted,...

Double Oscar-nominee Rooney Mara is all wrapped up, literally, with her co-star Raúl Briones in her new film, La Cocina. In it, the English-language debut of Mexican director Alonso Ruizpalacios (A Cop Movie, Museo), Mara plays Julia, an American waitress working the high-stress lunch rush in the Manhattan restaurant The Grill, whose relationship with undocumented Mexican grill cook Pedro (Briones) is about to be put to the test.

Briones incorporated Data-like mannerisms for her character Soji, such as his head tilt, and Brent Spiner (who played Data) helped her by demonstrating his mannerisms. Briones was instructed not to copy Data but to have the legacy of the character within her, allowing her to create different characters like Dahj and Sutra, who were both distinct from Soji.

Star Trek: Picard seasons 1 and 2 tasked Isa Briones with the challenge of playing multiple roles, and she explains the process of differentiating her characters. Briones was introduced as Dahj, a synthetic whose murder spurred Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) into action in season 1. Picard's mission became to protect Dahj's twin sister, Dr. Soji Asha, from Romulan assassins. Briones then played other synthetics like...

Image
Isa Briones, who played Soji in Star Trek: Picard, talks about a potential season 3 meeting between Soji and Data that was scrapped. Briones expresses her excitement at the idea of a scene between Soji and Brent Spiner's Data, as it would have fulfilled Data's desire for a daughter. While fans speculated about the possibility, Briones believes it would have been a beautiful moment.

Isa Briones, who played multiple roles in Star Trek: Picard, talks about a potential season 3 meeting between Soji and Data (Brent Spiner) that didn't happen. Soji was a principal character in Picard season 1, although Briones only made a brief appearance as Soji in Picard season 2. However, Soji and her deceased twin sister Dahj were essentially Data's daughters, as they were human-like synthetics built from a positronic neuron recovered from the then-late Data.

Oh, and Justin Long is along for the ride, playing Mr. Bratt.

A Jack Crusher Easter Egg Calls Back To Missing Picard Character
Image
A Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) Easter egg in Star Trek: Picard season 3 calls back to one of the major characters from seasons 1 and 2 who missed out on the final season. Picard season 3 reunited the legendary cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation for one more mission to save the galaxy while also introducing new characters like Jack, the son of Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden). However, several main characters from the previous Picard seasons did not appear in season 3 to make room for the Tng icons.

One of the prevalent mysteries of Star Trek: Picard season 3 was the secret of Jack Crusher. Raised by his mother on the outskirts of the galaxy, Jack endured lifelong nightmares and grew up isolated and lonely while being haunted by authoritarian leanings. As Crusher began to manifest abilities such as controlling the minds of others, Counselor Deanna Troi...

Picard Almost Had a Very Different Ending That Brought Back a Dead Star Trek Character
Image
This Star Trek: Picard contains spoilers.

By the time the credits rolled on the Star Trek: Picard series finale, the crew of The Next Generation were given a fitting send-off, complete with winks to the first and last episodes of the preceding series. Not only did we end once again with Picard playing cards with his old friends, something he did a long time ago, but a still-living Q appears to Jack Crusher, announcing a new trial for humanity.

But as satisfying as the finale certainly was, showrunner Terry Matalas originally had in mind something even vaster, bringing together the old and the new in an unexpected way. In his original script, Matalas had written in an appearance for Soji, the positronic android played by Isa Briones, who was at the center of Picard‘s first season. He wanted to give Data a scene with Soji, not just to replicate...

Picard Season 3's Lore Could Resurrect Data
Image
Could Lore's (Brent Spiner) presence in Star Trek: Picard season 3 secretly be a means to resurrect Data? The addition of Dr. Noonien Soong's original, evil positronic android in Star Trek: Picard season 3 was a big surprise. Of course, Lore shares a long history with the reunited crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the android joins a triumvirate of villains in Picard season 3 that includes Professor James Moriarty (Daniel Davis) and Vadic (Amanda Plummer), the new, mystery Big Bad.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 is the hotly-anticipated reunion of Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard with the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Yet, it's not quite the full crew of the USS Enterprise-d and E because Data died in Star Trek: Nemesis and was laid to rest in Star Trek: Picard season 1. This is what makes Lore's participation in Star Trek: Picard season 3 so curious because he may be billed as a villain,...
