- Director
Tinthi Tembo (born Chitinthi Tembo) August 8, 1994 is originally from Zimbabwe/Zambia. Tembo moved to Canada in 2008 on her own at just 14 years old. She went on to receive a BA in Human Geography and Critical Studies in Sexuality from the University of British Columbia. Tembo is undoubtedly passionate about expanding the definitions of who people are through storytelling. This inspired her current work within the film and television industry. To gain experience she worked in the Costumes department on a variety of films for A&E, Hallmark, CBC and NBC. Tembo recently had her Directorial debut with IronSelf 2022.
The mixed media documentary features live action and animation which is rooted in Tembo's appetite for Afro Futurism. The film had a US debut at the LA Documentary Film Festival followed by the London International Short Film Film Festival (IronSelf won two awards under Best Documentary Short and an Audience Award) and Seattle Black Film Festival. Tembo is working on a doc-series expected to go to camera in January, 2024.
She believes that ALL creatives need an outlet to showcase their work, which in turn fosters the community work Tembo does, advocating for Black and/or Indigenous creatives within the BC creative industry.
