GloRilla’s major-label debut Glorious harkens back towards the glory years of the dirty South. One track, “Hollon,” adopts the chorus from DJ Unk of “Walk It Out” fame’s “Hold on Ho.” Another, “Let Her Cook,” flips the same Isaac Hayes sample that girded C-Murder’s “Down for My Niggaz.” Then there’s “Whatchu Know Bout Me,” where Glo and Sexxy Red throw bows over a track partly constructed from Lil Boosie’s “Wipe Me Down.” “I love ratchet bitches twerkin’ to the beat/If you hear this song...

Season 19 of “American Idol” added a twist to round out the Top 10. The reality competition series showcased 10 of the season 18 contestants in a special edition on April 19. Each of them got a chance to sing one song for America’s votes. The winner of this run-off joins the rest of the Top 10 who made the cut on April 18: Alyssa Wray, Caleb Kennedy, Casey Bishop, Cassandra Coleman, Chayce Beckham, Deshawn Goncalves, Grace Kinstler, Hunter Metts and Willie Spence.
Of the 10 comeback contenders, the most likely to win is Arthur Gunn, the season 18 runner-up. He has proven he is popular with “American Idol” viewers, having lost last year’s final to Just Sam in a razor-thin vote. His strongest rivals are Louis Knight, who just missed making the Top 5 and Makayla Phillips who was unlucky enough to be ousted when the Top 11 was pared down to seven. The other contenders in...

At one point in time, I had to deactivate my social media accounts and stop watching the news to preserve my mental health. I was so tired of seeing Black people headline the news, whether for crime, being disproportionately affected by Covid-19, or as victims of police brutality. Time and time again, my saving grace has been entertainment; it has helped me create my own utopia. It is where I can re-create a world where Black people are safe, celebrated, and belong. Here are a few of my entertainment safe havens.

When I want to be vulnerable and live vicariously through an imperfectly perfect modern Black family, I watch This Is Us. Right now, it is hands down my favorite show. There isn't a single episode where the interaction between Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) doesn't bring me to tears. During those moments,...
