Netflix’s “Black Mirror” returns to the Emmy Awards after a four-year break with its sixth season that premiered back in June 2023. The trajectory of the Charlie Brooker anthology series at the Emmys has been a tumultuous journey, particularly in recent years. The science-fiction dystopia used to dominate the limited/movie genre, winning Best Television Movie for three consecutive years at its height, before the Television Academy ruled that it must compete for the drama categories for its fifth season in 2020, ending its streak. Then the following year, the top category for limited series was changed to Best Limited or Anthology Series, placing “Black Mirror” back into the genre, but in the more competitive limited series race rather than the standalone television movies.

Movie music can be insanely operatic, which is why some composers have been able to perform their fan-favorite scores in concerts. Daniel Pemberton, who has been known to do some very dramatic tunes that easily lent themselves to movie trailers, has piggybacked his recent announcement of his U.K. tour with a tour in the United States. The composer has contributed to the abstract and moody tone of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: Live in Concert will be web-swinging into concert venues in the U.S. starting with Nashville, Tennessee on September 1. For more U.S. tour information, visit the official website, beginning at 10 a.m. Et today. The performances will feature a live-to-picture performance of Pemberton’s mold-breaking orchestral and electronic score. A scratch DJ on turntables and a designated whistler will be performing to...

A scratch DJ on turntables and a designated whistler will also be present to add two of the score’s most unique ingredients, and at a select number of events, you might even catch Pemberton on guitar and a number of other instruments including his own face. Who could've imagined "Community" launching the careers of so many big-name artists? From the Russo Brothers to Donald Glover and Alison Brie, Dan Harmon's cult-favorite comedy series was a breeding ground for then-budding talents, perhaps none more so than composer Ludwig Göransson. Over the last 15 years, Göransson has cemented himself as one of the best music-making millennials in the business, along the way picking up an Oscar for the sick Afrofuturistic beats of his "Black Panther" soundtrack (although his Oscar-nominated score for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" was just as impressive). He's now landed a well-deserved second Academy Award for his electrifying work on "Oppenheimer," placing him in some reputable company when it comes to the Oscars.
Specifically, this gives Göransson just as many Oscars as Hans Zimmer. It's actually kind of mind-boggling that the legendary composer doesn't have more than that, considering just how many iconic movie scores he's...

The ballots are in, and the nominations for the 96th annual Academy Awards are final. And with their announcement early Tuesday morning comes a new year’s worth of snubs and surprises. Yet 2024 has a particular twinge of deja vu because like on a frosty January morning in 2020, Greta Gerwig was notably passed over in the Best Director category.
Indeed, the biggest movie of 2023 will go on to have the biggest snubs at the following year’s Oscars ceremony, with Barbie‘s Gerwig missing out on the Best Director shortlist and star Margot Robbie being absent in the Best Actress category, despite their film being nominated for Best Picture. The latter omission was always a strong possibility given how competitive Best Actress was this year, and with Emma Stone (Poor Things), Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), and Carey Mulligan (Maestro) all locked in as frontrunners ( and probably...

Albert Einstein had his theory of relativity, and Breaking Baz has his theory of party lift-off.
Friday night at the Universal filmed entertainment soiree, the moment of fusion came when Snoop Dogg hit the room at the Sunset Tower and was immediately embraced by Oppenheimer stars Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh.
No wait. Surely, it was when Blunt took Robert Downey Jr. in her arms and a giddy little waltz ensued.
Maybe the right molecular vibe kicked in when Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan arrived with Emma Thomas, its producer, and they fell into a lively conversation with Cillian Murphy and Downey Jr.
Perhaps it was when Colman Domingo sauntered in, resplendent in red. He stars in Netflix movie Rustin and WB’s The Color Purple, neither of them linked to Universal. Didn’t matter a jot. The warmth of the welcome for him was palpable. “I’m happy to be here,...

Barbie led all films with eight wins at the Astra Film Awards on Saturday night, but the biggest winner of all may have been the Hca — an organization of “critics, entertainment journalists, content creators, industry insiders and creatives” formerly known as the Hollywood Critics Association and recently rebranded as the Hollywood Creative Alliance — which appears to have weathered external criticisms and internal dissension, given the sizable talent turnout at its flagship event.

Goodbye, Christmas and New Year’s. Hello, awards season!
The Golden Globes are upon us, and that means the festivities kick off with W Magazine’s annual Friday night soiree toasting its Best Performances Issue. Expect to see well-heeled, A-List celebrities mix and mingle elbow-to-elbow in the penthouse suite of the Chateau Marmont.
That same evening, Jon Hamm, Willem Dafoe and Wilmer Valderrama will be among the celebs at the Golden Globes Foundation Dinner helping to present $5 million in grant awards to 96 non-profits.
In the past, studios and networks threw lavish affairs in separate ballrooms at the Beverly Hilton immediately following the Globes, but things have slowed down in recent years due to the Covid pandemic and controversies that rocked the HFPA. Instead, there are smaller affairs being thrown at venues throughout Los Angeles in the nights leading up to the Globes and immediately following the big show.

Awards season kicks into overdrive on the first weekend of the year with the return of the Golden Globes. The 81st telecast has a new broadcast partner (CBS), a new host (Jo Koy), new catering (Nobu) and a new social calendar accompanying it. For years, the Golden Globes were followed by a crush of studio and network bashes inside the show’s headquarters at the Beverly Hilton, making it a favorite of countless party-hopping revelers. But pandemic era cutbacks and studio consolidation upended the festivities — gone is the Warner Bros. and InStyle soiree while HBO scaled back under new corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery and will be hosting something on Emmy weekend — though all is not lost. This year’s parties are spread across the weekend and at various venues across the city.

Plot: On the verge of bankruptcy, Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) enters his racing team in the 1957 Mille Miglia.
Review: Ferrari is the only movie to come out this year that can say it sports a screenplay credit by a writer who’s been dead for fourteen years. Indeed, director Michael Mann has been trying to get his Ferrari movie off the ground for at least the last twenty years. He came close about eight years ago, with Christian Bale set to lead what would have been a big-budget version of the story. But, in the years since, the industry has changed, with Mann having to contend with a leaner budget to make his long-held passion project. Rather than compromise his vision, the potentially reduced scope helps make this one of his most intimate and involving films, harkening back to the days of The Insider.
Adam Driver is well-cast as Enzo Ferrari.

Oscar’s music branch has had its say, naming 15 original scores and 15 songs to its shortlist for possible nomination at the 96th Academy Awards, with few surprises.
As expected, all three “Barbie” songs that were entered — Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” — made the 15-song list. Only two, under Academy rules, can be nominated.
The mild surprise was the citing of two new songs from “The Color Purple” (“Keep It Movin'” and “Superpower”) and two from “Flora and Son” (“High Life” and “Meet in the Middle”), while two of the biggest musicals of the season, “Wonka” and “Wish,” failed to make the cut in either category.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlists in 10 categories for the upcoming 96th Oscars ceremony.
Overall, Greta Gerwig’s meta-comedy “Barbie” had the most mentions with five including sound, original song for its three submissions from Billie Eilish (“What I Was Made For?”), Dua Lipa (“Dance the Night”) and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt (“I’m Just Ken”), and original score, from the latter duo. The big miss for “Barbie” was in makeup and hairstyling, which was the category that yielded the most surprises.

As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music––whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song––can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 20 films that best expressed that notion in 2023.
From seasoned composers to accomplished musicians, as well as a smattering of soundtracks, each perfectly transported us. Check out our rundown of the top 20, which includes streams to each soundtrack in full where available.
20. Infinity Pool (Tim Hecker)

The Oscars shortlist voting period has closed as of 5:00 p.m. Pt.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the finalists in 10 categories — documentary feature (15), documentary short subject (15), international feature (15), makeup and hairstyling (10), sound (10), original score (15), original song (15), animated short film (15), live action short film (15), and visual effects (10) — on Thursday, Dec. 21.
We expect to see multiple best picture contenders in various races, including Greta Gerwig’s meta-comedy “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s historical biopic “Oppenheimer.” When it comes to “Barbie,” we are forecasting six mentions for the movie, including three of its songs — “Dance the Night,” “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For,” which feels like it sealed the deal with Billie Eilish’s moving musical performance on this week’s “Saturday Night Live.”

Producer Metro Boomin Says ‘Spider-Verse’ Song ‘Am I Dreaming’ Started with a ‘Grand Champion’ Sound
When “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was first recruiting artists for its soundtrack, Metro Boomin was not yet offered the role of executive producer on the album. “The original plan was to have me contribute a few songs or something for the movie, and the chemistry between everybody in the team just ended up being so great,” the current Grammy nominee for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical said to IndieWire over Zoom. Then, in December 2022, he released his latest album “Heroes and Villains,” which was not only on theme, but debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200, and went on to become the best-selling rap album of 2023. The opportunity to have a much higher stake in making music for the sequel to the Oscar-winning animated superhero movie soon followed, with the greenlight for Metro to also release the soundtrack under his own label. “The timing couldn’t have been better.”

Our favorite scores of 2023 are wide-ranging. They include everything from intimate love stories to inventive looks into the past to the biggest and loudest blockbusters. We have animated juggernauts and weirder, wilder genre swings alongside the films that probably will get more awards attention for their scores — along with all their other categories. Some scores have gone viral on TikTok, and some have yet to have the chance; although if anything deserves its own TikTok trend, it is Robbie Robertson’s last, greatest work on “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

The Golden Globes – and the Hollywood Foreign Press organization that runs them — continue to lean into the idea of them as a mysterious, shadowy cabal where no one is exactly certain of who votes for the winners. And while the ceremony has landed a proper US broadcast network this year in CBS, it's for a greatly reduced fee. And the clout of the awards themselves has certainly shrunk in recent years thanks to scandals and other issues. But they're rolling out again, and the nominations have arrived, with Barbie, Oppenheimer, The Holdovers and Killers Of The Flower Moon dominating the film side while the likes of Succession and The Bear garnered plenty of nominations on the TV front.
Barbie, as it has in so many other ways, ruled over all with the second-most nominations in Globes history (nine). On its heels, the likes of Killers Of The Flower Moon, Oppenheimer,...
