Somewhere inside a dressing room, Jon Batiste is sitting at a piano. The Grammy- and Oscar-winning artist plays a familiar melody, but then he gets an alert on his phone: Prime Day is coming up next month.
Of course, this is all part of Batiste’s latest music video campaign for Amazon’s annual shopping event for scoring discounted gear, which runs from July 12 to 13 this year. If you haven’t seen it,...

In the new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, Rob Sheffield and Brittany Spanos join host Brian Hiatt for a track-by-track analysis of Harry Styles’ new album, Harry’s House.
To hear the whole episode, press play above, or listen on or Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Here’s a preview of some of the discussion:
“Music for a Sushi Restaurant”
Hiatt: It does seem to be advertising a sort of freedom and confidence in the very wacky synth horn parts and almost Oingo Boingo-ness of that.
Spanos: I absolutely love this song.

One of the world’s biggest pop stars is a music geek obsessed with obscure Wings tracks, a guy who named his new album after a 1973 release by Japanese pop pioneer Haruomi Hosono. As confirmed by Harry Styles’ third and most diverse album, Harry’s House, and the distinctly indie-rock-ish Number One hit “As It Was,” Styles is somehow managing to conquer the mainstream without compromising his impressively quirky instincts.

Simply Red is the wild card on this year’s Obama summer playlist. You expect the former president’s curated playlists to be loaded with impeccably hip picks, from all over the worlds of pop, soul, jazz, rock & roll, and his 2021 Summer Playlist is no exception. He’s got vintage classics like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, he’s got cool kids like Jazmine Sullivan and Migos and Wye Oak. Prestige grooves, all the way. In November 1984, Billy Ocean’s “Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)” dethroned Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You” to take the Number One spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was a brash fusion of soul, reggae, R&b, and pop unlike anything that had been heard before on Top 40 radio, and the singer followed it up with equally eclectic hits like “Loverboy,” “Suddenly,” and “When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going.”

The more emotion-driven a TV series or movie, the more important the soundtrack. And boy is Normal People, the Hulu adaptation of Sally Rooney’s wildly popular novel of the same name, driven by the emotion of its characters and world.
Normal People follows Marianne and Connell’s complicated relationship as they move from being teenagers at a small town in western Ireland into young adulthood at Dublin’s Trinity College, and showrunner Ed Guiney, directors Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald, music supervisors Juliet Martin and Maggie Phillips, and editor Nathan Nugent have done an impressive job crafting the music landscape for this world.
“We were trying all sorts of tracks ourselves,” said Abrahamson, who mentioned Martin, Phillips, Nugent, and himself as the chief collaborators in the process. “So, as well as the work that Stephen Rennicks, the composer, was doing, it was just, again, a very organic kind of collaboration.

I’m not sure any of us were — insert Valley Girl accent here — “Like, oh-my-God!” about the idea of The Voice’s ’80s Week after we heard what Team Kelly Clarkson’s since-eliminated Shane Q did to Billy Ocean’s “Caribbean Queen” during the Top 10’s performances. But on the other hand, that disaster did kinda-sorta mean that the Top 8 couldn’t do worse Monday night, right? Read on, and we’ll discuss not only the semifinalists’ throwback duets but also whether their solo numbers qualified as singular sensations.

The brutal 1989 hit took a much-loved onscreen pairing, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, and tore them to pieces
It’s easy to forget just how consistently, bracingly nasty The War of the Roses is, thanks in great part to the extravagant, and festive, studio packaging it arrived in, unwrapped in cinemas 30 years ago this month. It was fast-paced, glossy, Christmassy and, deceptively, it starred one of the most beloved onscreen couples of the 80s: Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. Audiences were accustomed to seeing them bicker in the hit adventures Romancing the Stone and The Jewel of the Nile but their sparring was only ever of the screwball variety, a string of lighthearted quips signposting a Billy Ocean-soundtracked happy ending on the horizon.

If The Voice’s Shane Q was trying to get eliminated ahead of next week’s Semifinals, his rendition of “Caribbean Queen” during the Top 10 performances the evening before sure seemed like a foolproof way to do it. If he’d sung that way during the Blind Auditions, he’d never have gotten a chair turn — even from coach Kelly Clarkson, who so often seems to swivel just because “Oh, I know that song! Must! Hit! Button!”
I knew going into Tuesday’s episode that yeah, yeah, Shane had surprised us before — more than once — and avoided elimination. But I...

Gold Derby readers have been making their predictions all week long for which two of the Top 10 artists on “The Voice” won’t be making it into the Top 8, and things are not looking good for Joana Martinez and Shane Q. Both of these contestants have already appeared in the bottom and successfully sang for their lives in the instant save, but now their journeys on NBC’s reality TV show may be coming to an end. Joana of Team Gwen Stefani has 1/3 racetrack odds of going home on Tuesday night while Shane of Team Kelly Clarkson has odds of 2/11.

“I’m not going to be singing rock & roll when I’m 60,” Mick Jagger told his accountant 50 years ago, matter-of-factly, when he was merely an ex-economics student who’d started a rock band. Jagger’s dogged defiance of his own proclamation — the frontman turned 76 earlier this year and the Rolling Stones wrapped a major three-year tour last month — became a source of lifelong motivation for that very accountant, Laurence Myers, who’s now publishing a memoir about his own zig-zagging career in the music industry.

The recent addition of Robert Zemeckis’ Romancing The Stone to Netflix – starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner – stirred up a sizeable amount of love and nostalgia for the 1984 caper. In it, Douglas and Turner take on their own Indiana Jones-esque adventure, with crucially a couple at the heart of it that you could really root for.
But whereas Romancing The Stone tends to be very well loved, there’s a lot less affection for its rushed-out sequel, The Jewel Of The Nile. In fact, if anything, the film is best known for the song that Billy Ocean sings over the end credits, When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going (itself based on a line of dialogue that’s spouted a couple of times in the...

Back in May of 1986, when Billy Ocean topped the American pop charts with “There’ll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry),” it’s very unlikely that he was envisioning the eventual rise of Pixar as a force within the movie industry. The animation studio had just been founded a few months earlier and had yet to produce any of the tear-jerking classics for which it has now become famous, such as Up and Finding Nemo. Nevertheless, just as Ocean predicted three decades ago, music has been a key weapon in Pixar’s diabolical ongoing mission to reduce the world’s moviegoers, young and old alike, to blubbering masses of jelly in their theater seats. The studio routinely gets people emotionally invested in the stories of toys, talking animals, monsters, and other unlikely protagonists. But how exactly does music help Pixar do this? Is it just a matter of ...

It was 27 years ago today, in the final months of the 1980s, that the one of the defining shows of the 1990s, Seinfeld, premiered. Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David launched the “show about nothing” though they’d been asked to put together a 90-minute TV special. A season pick-up at first seemed unlikely after the pilot airing, but NBC execs ended up finding the money to order more episodes by making one fewer Bob Hope special, and the show of course went on to become one of the most successful and beloved comedies in television history, giving us the Soup Nazi, the Festivus pole, George’s musical answering machine, and a showcase for a quartet of four core comedic talents. Other notable July 5 happenings in pop culture history: • 1954: The BBC broadcast its first daily television news program. • 1954: Elvis Presley recorded his version of “That’s All Right.” • 1968:...

You can count on plenty of hair spray, belted leotards, and Billy Ocean songs, but Amazon’s new ’80s-set comedy Red Oaks won’t hit you over the head with a Rubik’s cube. The colorful era simply serves as the backdrop to a charming, romantic story that unfolds in pre-snark times. Remember those days? Red Oaks co-creators Greg Jacobs and Joe Gangemi sure do. When they were selling the coming-of-age story of college student David Meyer (Craig Roberts), who takes a summer job at a New Jersey country club as a tennis pro in 1985, the producers pitched it as “Caddyshack meets The Graduate.”“We wanted the silly, fun, lighthearted side of Caddyshack, but we wanted to give it a little grounding in real emotions and real things that we remember from being 20 years old in the ’80s and unsure about our future, and being undecided about all the different directions we could go.

A quick review of tonight's "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" coming up just as soon as I cook my oatmeal with a road flare... That was pretty swell, wasn't it? Where "Brooklyn" episodes can at times feel too diffuse by trying to squeeze three stories into the same episode, "The Wednesday Incident" for the most part decided to stick with two. It spent a lot of time on Jake and Gina investigating the eponymous incident and why it was making Captain Holt so cranky — and had a very minor third story of sorts in Terry trying to keep the squad from angering Holt further. And it gave us just enough of Boyle vs. Garry Marshall's genial old man bank robber to appreciate the joke (and the fun of Marshall acting) without eating up too much time elsewhere. While I certainly don't mind giving every member of the ensemble something to do, I...

Seventeen years have passed since Danny Boyle’s adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s “Trainspotting,” and while we’re still waiting for the long-promised sequel, the author has another film adaptation on the way in the form of the accurately-titled “Filth.” Scheduled for release in the U.K. this fall, we’ve got the soundtrack details along with a poster for the film. Birthday shoutouts go to Emma Bunton, who is 37, and Billy Ocean is 63. Here's his greatest song (and video), which peaked at #2 in February 1985.

A Bafta surprise from Berwick, a sing-off for the Oscars, and who's the best-dressed queen in the land?
The other Argo
Perhaps the biggest surprise of last week's nominations flood came in the Bafta list for outstanding British debut category. Alongside heralded films such as The Imposter was I Am Nasrine, which had not premiered at Sundance or Cannes, the Lff or even Edinburgh, but at the Berwick film and media arts festival.
I haven't spoken to anyone who'd even heard of the film prior to its nomination, though it did have a limited release in the north east, where its director, Tina Gharavi, resides and where it is partly set. So I tracked Gharavi down and spoke to her, just after she'd finished a call with the ever-voracious Weinstein Company, it turns out.
The film is about an Iranian woman who flees Tehran and finds herself smuggled to a rather bleak Tyneside.

If the full-length trailer is anything to go by (see above), Keith Lemon's forthcoming film promises to be an unreconstructed fantasy tale of the little man made... big and bamboozled by Kelly Brook's ample bosom.
Keith Lemon succumbs to the charms of Kelly Brook in his film
The trailer shows Mr Lemon playing... Keith Lemon, enjoying a meteoric rise to success and riches after an innovative, spur-of-the-moment business idea that gets even David Hasselhoff's face moving.
Kelly Brook - with no doubt plot-affecting near-nudity
This brings this humble suburbanite into contact with the great and the famous, which means a cast literally dripping with cameo roles from the likes of Gary Barlow, Ronan Keating, the Hoff and various Spice Girls, Peter Andre, Jedward... while Kelly Brook - for the sake of the art - has to show her versatility with an array of different lingeries. This is...

Another week of battle rounds begins, and the big question of the night is: When do the Adam, Cee Lo, Blake and Christina shower? Seriously, though. This is the longest day ever.
Chelsey notes that unlike some of Season 1's standouts, we've yet to see a battle become more like a complimentary duet. That is, until tonight.
Who finally brought "The Voice" Season 2 to new performance levels in the battle rounds, Part 3? Read on ...
Battle: Pip vs. Nathan Parrett
Team: Adam
Song: "You Know I'm No Good" by Amy Winehouse
Nathan, who immediately assumes the underdog role, is worried about being up against Pip, who turned around all four chairs during the blind auditions. Pip, on the other hand, seems more concerned that he set the bar too high for himself with his powerful first performance. Pip is incredibly humble.

There was a lot of ’80s love in the air last night! I had noticed that three out of the six songs were ’80s staples: we had a little Billy Ocean, a little Tina, and a little Pat Benatar. So the songs of the ’80s definitely helped narrow the fields down in the third battle round.
Pip and Nathan Parrett are really close friends, and Adam, of all of our coaches, specifically tells the producers of the show that he doesn’t want to know any personal information about his artists before he pairs them up. He likes to decide...

The Voice Battle Round #3 Review
After some rather uneven battles last week, the question coming into Monday night was whether The Voice could amp up the drama with some better competition. The result? Pretty much more of the same.
The first battle featured Pip vs. Nathan Parrett for Team Adam. Can someone please tell Pip that if you're going to try to be all hip by going with a single name, that name has to be cool? Alanis Morissette tells Pip to show some restraint in practice, while Nathan shows off his nervous ticks. Would Nathan be fearless on stage? If by fearless you mean stiff and awkward, then yes. The battle comes off more like a school play audition, but Pip brings just a little more to the table as both singers cause Amy Winehouse to roll over in her grave. Winner: Pip

Six more duets. Twelve chattering contestants. And a squeaky-clean performance of Amy Winehouse's dirty "You Know I'm No Good" that was more ironic than Carson Daly's deadpan delivery of "This is The Voice." Who came out on top last night? And who's forever banished to the cheap seats at Christina Aguilera's next concert of monster yodels and barf grunts? Join me, dear!
Pip vs. Nathan Parrett, Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good"
If you can look yourself in the mirror and say, "I tolerated a bow-tied adolescent named Pip's bluesy lounge cover of an Amy Winehouse song today," then congratulations: You've outperformed me. I didn't want to dig Pip and Nathan's Biebered down/DeGrawed up rendition of the late Amy's finest jam, but I can't say they butchered it. In fact, they left all of the song's pronouns intact, leaving bouquets of homoeroticism for...

This week on “The Voice” – there is weirdness during the third week of Battle Rounds. There’s a battle that shocks everyone (or so we’ve been told all week long.)
Battle 1: Adam choose Pip and Nathan and picks “You Know I’m No Good” by Amy Winehouse as their song. Pip meets with Alanis Morissette who tells Pip that restraint is exciting. Nathan meets with R & B producer Robin Thicke who points out Nathan’s tics and tells him to exude confidence.

The theme on Monday night's (March 19) episode of "The Voice" seemed to be strange pairings and even more oddly matched songs. Nearly every team to enter the ring was working one, the other or both for the third battle round, which saw judges Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green send six contestants home and add even more members to their respective teams to take to the upcoming shows.
Let's get right to it!

There have been plenty of creepy songs over the last thousand or so years. (Mozart‘s Requiem anybody? Well everybody, eventually.) We’ve decided to compile The 88 Creepiest Song Titles Of All Time. To be fair, we left out pretty much every death metal title because, frankly, they’re all pretty creepy. Click on the names of each artist to hear the selection. And feel free to weigh in on any song titles we may have left out in the comments. 88. “My Ding-a-Ling” Chuck Berry A no-brainer. It’s a song about a little boy discovering his penis, and it’s sung by a man well into his 40s. Perverted Justice’s favorite tune. 87. “Two Lovely Black Eyes” Charles Coborn What’s lovelier than a woman who was beaten in the face twice? According to Charles Coborn, nothing! 86. “With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm” Stanley Holloway A song about Anne Boleyn,...

We try to come up with a nickname befitting Rihanna's superstar status, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery
Rihanna

I realize this is probably not important, what with all the horrible stuff going on in the world, but Rihanna totally needs a good nickname.
More specifically, she deserves a good nickname, one befitting her status as a true pop&B icon. To wit, she has scored a staggering 10 #1's on the Billboard Hot 100 — making her the youngest ever to achieve such a feat — including four in 2010 alone. She has released six albums since 2005 (her next is due in November), which have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy awards, is the official ambassador of Barbados (where she ranks somewhere between Doug E. Fresh and rum on the nation's "greatest exports" scale), has signed lucrative endorsement deals with everyone from Gucci to Vita Coco,...

Get Billy Ocean on the horn! NBC is planning to adapt Romancing the Stone as a television series, Deadline reports.
The 1984 romantic comedy stars Kathleen Turner as romance novelist Joan Wilder, who travels to Colombia to save her kidnapped sister, with the help of con man/charmer Jack T. Colton (Michael Douglas). The box office smash, which launched Turner's career and is considered Douglas' comeback film, spawned an equally successful sequel, 1985's Jewel of the Nile — and two killer theme songs, Eddy Grant's funky original and Ocean's peppier follow-up.

"Chuck" had a whole lot to pack into 41 minutes or so of story this week -- a pair of pre-wedding parties, a heart-to-heart between Chuck and Ellie and a big development in this season's ongoing spy story. "Chuck vs. Agent X" felt slightly overstuffed at times, but the good far outweighed the bad in an episode that deftly set the stage for the final two episodes of the season.
Even if you had your suspicions about the identity of Agent X, the revelation at the end worked. Ellie's introduction to Castle and the spy world, which followed her and Chuck finally coming clean with one another, also played well. And comically stoned Jeff is pretty much always good.
If anything, the episode maybe could have used a little bit less time on the bachelor-party prep and the trip to Las Vecas (as opposed to Las Vegas) before Ray Wise (Ok,...

Britain’s Got Talent will return to ITV this Saturday night and one act due to be featured in the fifth series of the reality TV show, are singing act Soul Kings.
On their own website the talented trio describe themselves saying:
The Soul Kings, and their Big Wigs have been performing throughout the UK for over ten years. They are a trio of singers who sing many of the popular hits from the late 60’s and 70’s such as Disco Inferno, Oh What A Night, hits by Billy Ocean and Lionel Ritchie and The Drifters to mention just a few.
The men auditioned for Amanda Holden, Michael McIntyre and David Hasselhoff in Glasgow in January and audience members say that the crowd loved their act, but did the judges feel the same?

Tinie Tempah and Jls scooped two trophies each at the Mobo awards last night, October 20. "Pass Out" hitmaker Tinie, a virtual unknown a year ago, was named Best Newcomer and took home Best Video for his song "Frisky" featuring producer Labrinth at the awards which celebrate Music of Black Origin.
Jls, who were named Best Newcomer last year, took home Best Album for their self-titled debut and Best U.K. Act at the event in Liverpool, Northern England. Other groups attending the ceremony included N-Dubz, Professor Green, Mark Ronson, and U.S. rapper Nelly.
N-Dubz singers Tulisa and Dappy, who, along with bandmate Fazer, picked up Best Song for their track "Playing with Fire", said they were glad to see Tinie finally getting the recognition he deserves.
Dappy exclusively told Bang Showbiz, "When he hooked up with Labrinth, Boom! it went off. Before that he was working and struggling for years.
