He received a commission in the Foreign Legion, and served in Vietnam in 1945-46. He then entered the Paris Conservatoire and graduated in 1952 with a first prize in conducting. By 1954 he was becoming known in the music world, but was called back to the Foreign Legion and posted to Algeria.
