Jennifer Westfeldt has had an interesting career as a screenplay author, and hopefully she’ll get some of the credit she deserves with Friends with Kids, even if it has its flaws. After spinning part of the play Lipschtick into Kissing Jessica Stein, and ultimately earning a lot of love among indie fans, Westfeldt’s next film, Ira & Abby, remains as woefully unheard of today as ever.
Friends with Kids follows a curious turn of events that takes place within a group of six friends. Four out of the group are married couples, and then there’s Jason (Adam Scott) and Julie (Jennifer Westfeldt).
Couple 1, Leslie (Maya Rudolph) and Alex (Chris O’Dowd), are exactly the couple you’d expect them to be if you’re familiar with Rudolph and O’Dowd (Away We Go-esque Rudolph anyway). They’re funny, in a quippy sort of way, and provide the majority...

Sony has picked up "Mommy & Me," the comedy package featuring Meryl Streep and Tina Fey as a mother-and-daughter duo to be directed by Stanley Tucci.
CAA circulated the project around town earlier in July and signs pointed to Sony, which made last year's Streep comedy "Julie & Julia," as a strong contender.
Storylines are under wraps, although it spotlights the thorny and funny sides of mother-daughter relationships.
Joby Harold wrote the treatment that went with the package and is exec producing with Tucci, Steve Buscemi and Joshua Astrachan.
Wren Arthur, Lucy Barzun Donnelly and Tory Tunnell are producing.
Streep and Tucci have worked together on-screen in "Devil Wears Prada" and "Julie & Julia." It's unclear at this time if Tucci would appear in the movie or just stick to directing.
Fey, repped by Wme and 3 Arts Entertainment, is slowly building her film resume, working on features during her time in between seasons of "30 Rock.

Summit's battle-hardened "The Hurt Locker" scored another victory Sunday night as it took home the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures at the 21st annual PGA Awards.
The presentation capped the Producers Guild of America's ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium.
The prize was shared by producers Kathryn Bigelow (who also directed), Mark Boal (the film's screenwriter), Nicolas Chartier and Greg Shapiro. Bigelow thanked the PGA, saying "no other group of filmmakers could so understand the logistical challenges of making a film -- particularly a tough little war film -- in the middle of the summer in the Middle East."
If the producers of the 82nd annual Academy Awards were hoping that the best picture Oscar race would develop some suspense, they have received the scenario they wanted.
"Locker" has picked up numerous critics awards, and two weekends ago it won the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.

- A little cash can go a long way when developing a screenplay, and if you happen to be working on anything related to “stories about science and technology or portray scientists, engineers and mathematicians as major characters” then a hand over from the Tribeca Film Institute’s Tfi Sloan Filmmaker Fund should be among your priorities. Today a jury comprised of Darren Aronofsky, Steven Shainberg, producer Caroline Baron, producer/writer Ann Druyan and a couple of profs and doctors selected the recipients of some financial and creative support. Among the project we find some familiar names including Amy Redford who has The Guitar coming out in November, and speaking of in November, Greg Harrison directed Courtney Cox in a film going by just that title and finally Tim Kirkman last directed Loggerheads for a very small theatrical run in 2005. The five selected projects selected received a sum of either

Opened: Friday, June 6 (Peace Arch Entertainment).A road movie that rambles even more than its wandering protagonist, "The Go-Getter" is the sort of quirky independent comedy that strives for hipness but ultimately just feels contrived and derivative.
While its appealing performances, sun-dappled cinematography and occasional witty dialogue provide some com--pensation along the way, the trip feels far longer than it actually is.
The central character is Mercer Lou Taylor Pucci, "Thumbsucker"), a 19-year-old still grieving for his recently deceased mother. One day he impulsively steals a car and goes off in search of his older, estranged half brother (Jsu Garcia). Driving through the open ranges of the Southwest, he soon begins a teasing cell phone relationship with the car's surprisingly not angry owner, Kate (Zooey Deschanel).
Along the way, he encounters a series of oddballs, including a pornographer who goes by the name Sergio Leone Julio Oscar Mechoso), a liquor-supply salesman (Bill Duke) who offers self-defense tips and a former classmate (Jena Malone) who introduces him to the pleasure of Ecstasy-enhanced sex.
Writer-director Martin Hynes seems all too eager to reveal the influence of the French New Wave and other genres as evidenced by examples like a dance sequence that directly quotes Godard's "Band of Outsiders".
Eventually, after an amusing montage in which Mercer imagines numerous possibilities for the face of the disembodied voice with whom he's been speaking, he and Kate finally meet, though the encounter doesn't live up to the nearly feature-length buildup.Cast: Lou Taylor Pucci, Zooey Deschanel, Jena Malone, William Lee Scott, Nick Offerman, Maura Tierney, Judy Greer, Julio Oscar Mechoso, Bill Duke, Colin Fickes, Jsu Garcia. Director-Screenwriter: Martin Hynes. Producers: Lucy Barzun Donnelly, Lori Christopher, Larry Furlong. Rated R, 93 minutes.

HBO Films has greenlighted Grey Gardens, a movie starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange that's based on the 1975 documentary about Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' eccentric cousin and aunt.
The movie is based on the documentary by Albert and David Maysles. It follows the relationship between the mother-daughter duo of Big Edie (Lange) and Little Edie Beale (Barrymore), who spent most of their lives in a decaying mansion on New York's Long Island.
The project was originally announced as a feature film in early 2006, though HBO Films was not involved at the time.
Along with Barrymore and Lange, other original auspices on board are commercials helmer Michael Sucsy, who is directing and wrote the script with Patricia Rozema (This Might Be Good), and executive producers Rachael Horovitz (Little Black Book) and Lucy Barzun Donnelly (The Go-Getter). David Coatsworth (HBO's John Adams) is producing.
It's yet to be determined if the movie will be released theatrically before it airs on HBO.
Edith Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale made national headlines in 1971 when the Suffolk County Health Department raided their dilapidated East Hampton, N.Y., mansion -- named Grey Gardens -- and found more than 50 cats, raccoons, fleas, piles of garbage, human and cat excrement and no heat or running water.
