To fully grasp the dire state of theatrical distribution of independent films, consider the words of John Sloss, founder and CEO of Cinetic Media, who recently told Variety:
“It’s imperative for all of us to get behind reigniting the theatrical experience because I don’t think the streamers are ever going to be behind the new voices and independent films. The only way to really get them out in the world is to put them in a theater where they can be reviewed and where they can sit long enough for word of mouth to really support them. That’s really the dangerous moment we are in, in terms of getting people back in the theaters.”
Suppose there’s a way out of the “dangerous moment” for independent cinema that Sloss describes. In that case, it will probably come about because of talented indie filmmakers like director Potsy Ponciroli and his experienced,...

Since Jeffrey Epstein died under mysterious circumstances in his prison cell in August 2019 while awaiting sex-trafficking charges, and his right-hand woman Ghislaine Maxwell received 20 years behind bars for her part in the sex-trafficking operation (in a low-security prison, without having to name names), there’s still an overwhelming air of suspicion, confusion, and anger surrounding the notorious pedophile and the rich-and-powerful men who found themselves in his inner circle. A host of Hollywood and sports celebrities including Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen and Larry David were named as defendants in a class-action lawsuit against cryptocurrency exchange Ftx, arguing that their celebrity status made them culpable for promoting the firm’s failed business model.
Ftx has been in the public eye for more than a week, after the third-largest cryptocurrency exchange ended up with billions of dollars worth of losses and had to seek bankruptcy protection on Friday. The Bahamas-based company and its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, are under investigation by state and federal authorities for allegedly investing depositors funds in ventures without their approval.
Lawmakers also announced plans to investigate the failure of Ftx, with the House Financial Services Committee saying it plans to hold a hearing on Ftx in December.

“I’m never wrong about this stuff, never,” said a dismissive and scoffing Larry David earlier this year in that now infamous Super Bowl ad for investing in cryptocurrency exchange Ftx.
While the Seinfeld co-creator rejected the wheel, coffee, the U.S. Constitution, electricity, putting a man on the moon and more innovations in the much praised commercial, looks like David might have been right about the now collapsed Ftx, for all the good it’s going to do him.
Along with the likes of Tom Brady, Gisele Bundchen, Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors, Shaquille O’Neal, and Naomi Osaka, David is now a defendant in a class action suit against the now hollowed out Ftx and its ex-ceo Sam Bankman-Fried.

During a Monday procession in Scotland to honor the late Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Andrew was heckled by a young man.
The official procession coverage shows the man yelling, “Andrew! You’re a sick old man!” After that moment, the audio was muted, so it’s unclear what else was said.
Folks around the heckler were quick to respond, pulling him out of the way. Some of them began chanting, “God save the king.”
Prince Andrew, King Charles III, Princess Anne and Prince Edward all walked together in the procession from Holyroodhouse to St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh.
The Prince’s lack of popularity isn’t surprising, given his involvement with infamous sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. On August 9, 2021, Virginia Giuffre alleged that Epstein trafficked her to Prince Andrew when she was 17 years old. The Prince agreed to settle the lawsuit in February 2022 for about 10 million.

A black-owned TV company sued Nexstar Media Group on Wednesday, accusing the company of sabotaging its efforts to operate independently.
Marshall Broadcasting Group owns three Fox affiliates in Odessa, Texas; Shreveport, La.; and Davenport, Iowa. The company, owned by Pluria Marshall Jr., bought the stations from Nexstar in 2014, as Nexstar was looking to divest in order to win FCC approval for a series of acquisitions.
According to the suit, Nexstar aimed to sell to Marshall, knowing that the FCC would look favorably upon a sale to a minority-owned company. Nexstar went so far as to guarantee the financing to complete the transaction. But the suit alleges that since the deal, Nexstar has sabotaged Marshall’s effort to run the stations.

The Boies/Schiller Film Group filed suit on Tuesday, accusing Emmett Furla Oasis of breaching a deal to produce two “Escape Plan” sequels starring Sylvester Stallone.
Boies/Schiller was founded in 2012 by star litigator David Boies and Zack Schiller, the son of Jonathan Schiller — the co-founder of Boies’ law firm. The firm aimed to finance and produce “mid-level wide release films” of the sort that studios had largely turned away from. One of its early deals was to produce “Escape Plan,” the 2013 Emmett Furla Oasis action movie starring Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
According to the suit, Boies/Schiller put up a $6 million loan for the $65 million project. The arrangement also gave Boies/Schiller rights to finance and produce the sequels, “Escape Plan 2: Hades” and “Escape Plan: The Extractors.”
Boies/Schiller alleges that Emmett Furla Oasis breached that agreement, and did not allow Boies/Schiller to put up financing for the sequels.

The New York Times is seeking “appropriate remedies” for “a grave betrayal of trust” after the New Yorker reported Monday that famed attorney David Boies’ law firm represented the paper at the same time that Boies assisted efforts to derail a bombshell Times expose of his client, Harvey Weinstein. “We learned today that the law firm of Boies Schiller and Flexner secretly worked to stop our reporting on Harvey Weinstein at the same time as the firm’s lawyers were representing us in other matters,” Eileen Murphy, a New York Times spokesperson, told TheWrap. “We consider this intolerable conduct, a grave betrayal of.

The Manhattan firm of Boies, Schiller and Flexner was representing the New York Times at the same time as lead partner David Boies was aiding Harvey Weinstein's efforts to block the publication of sexual harassment stories in the newspaper.
The New Yorker pointed to Boies' potential conflict of interest in a bombshell report Monday. The story, the third in a series from Ronan Farrow that have caused shock waves throughout Hollywood and beyond, outlined the network of private investigators and intelligence firms Weinstein used to spy on and discredit women, including Rose McGowan, who have subsequently accused the producer of sexual...

Harvey Weinstein allegedly went to great lengths to silence sexual assault allegations, according to a new exposé from The New Yorker‘s Ronan Farrow.
In a report released on Monday evening, Farrow detailed how Weinstein hired private security agencies, including ex-Mossad operatives, to retrieve information on women —specifically actresses Rose McGowan and Asia Argento — and journalists in attempts to stop the allegations from going public.
In addition, former employees from Weinstein’s film enterprises were enlisted as well as a high-ranking media editor.

Upon learning that reporters from The New York Times and The New Yorker are planning to publish allegations of his sexual and workplace impropriety, Harvey Weinstein has mobilized a robust cadre of lawyers to fight the publications, Variety reports.
At The New York Times, correspondent Jodi Kantor and investigative reporter Megan Twohey have reportedly contacted dozens of The Weinstein Company and Miramax Films co-founder’s current and former employees. Kantor and Twohey have also reportedly seen human resource files on Weinstein, and quoted female accusers on the record.
Kantor co-wrote an April 2015 exposé on Amazon’s ruthless workplace culture, and Twohey wrote a Nyt piece last month on legal complications stemming Weinstein’s role in a Spring 2015 amfAR auction. Meanwhile, “Today” contributor Ronan Farrow, the son of Woody Allen and Mia Farrow, is said to be writing his own story for The New Yorker.

After making cuts, The Weinstein Co.'s drama 3 Generations will receive a PG-13 rating.
Earlier this month, the company had said it would challenge the MPAA's decision to assign an R rating to the transgender drama starring Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon and had enlisted attorney David Boies in the effort. It is unclear if TWC ever filed an appeal.
But on Thursday, TWC said it had reached an agreement with MPAA after tweaking the Gaby Dellal-helmed film that will ensure a PG-13 rating for "mature thematic content, some sexual references and language." A source said the cuts...

The MPAA gave ‘3 Generations’ an R-rating and The Weinstein Company isn’t having it.3 Generations
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) decided that the Weinstein Company’s film 3 Generations deserves an R-rating. The MPAA claims that strong language and sexual references mean that the film isn’t suitable for younger viewers without parental consent. However, the Weinstein Company claims the rating would bar a necessary film from reaching a broad audience.
3 Generations tells the story of Ray (Elle Fanning) a transgender teenager. In the film, Ray and his mother Maggie (Naomi Watts) must search for Ray’s father to obtain consent for Ray to start his transition. Meanwhile, Ray’s grandmother (Susan Sarandon) struggles to accept Ray’s transformation from granddaughter to grandson.
Director and co-writer Gaby Dellal emphasized that she “[wanted] to speak to kids, to parents, and to grandparents everywhere in a common language of love and inclusion about a subject matter that is not...

The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today plans to challenge the Motion Picture Association of America’s (MPAA) decision to assign an “R” rating to its forthcoming film 3 Generations. The film, which stars Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts, and Susan Sarandon, provides an authentic and sensitive portrayal of what it means to be a transgender youth in today’s society and the enormous impact familial support can have as one transitions. 3 Generations has been rated “R” by the MPAA, citing language including some sexual references behind the decision.
TWC has enlisted the help of top Hollywood lawyer David Boies to advise on their dissent. Largely known for his pivotal role to overturn Proposition 8, California’s discriminatory ban on gay marriage, back in 2009, Boies has consulted on numerous human rights issues for TWC including censorship of the Academy Award® nominated film Carol, as well as a previous protest of the MPAA’s rating of the documentary Bully.

Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein wrote an essay after British lawmakers blocked a proposed Alan Turing law, which would have posthumously pardoned 49,000 people who were criminalized for being gay, like Turing.
The British computer scientist, who was the subject of the 2015 film The Imitation Game portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, was a codebreaker during World War II. He was also chemically castrated after it was discovered that he was gay. He committed suicide 1954 at the age of 41.
Weinstein, who distributed the film via The Weinstein Company, wrote a letter after the British Parliament blocked the law last week through a filibuster.

A week after The Weinstein Company went after Open Road and the producers of the upcoming Playmobil movie over who actually has the right to distribute the animated pic, the other side hit back – and they’re not playing around.
“There was never any contract with TWC,” says a cross-complaint (read it here) filed today by producers Moritz Borman and Dimitri Rassam and their respective companies in Los Angeles Superior Court. “TWC launched this controversy, masking its current financial instability by filing a strike suit with no written license attached,” the eight-page filing claims, also calling the whole matter a case “about a failed movie license negotiation which cratered.”
It goes on to claim that “the producers learned the production lending bank for the Project would neither trust nor accept as collateral a promise from TWC to pay a minimum guarantee, due to the bank’s negative perception about TWC’s disintegrating liquidity.

Jane Got a Gun hasn't had the best of luck. The Western had its director not show up on the first day of the shoot, actors drop out and multiple different release dates, and it looks as though the troubles facing the Natalie Portman-led and produced feature aren't over yet. Relativity Media, a company without a full-out hit since 2011, is on the edge of bankruptcy, and a little over a month before the movie's September 4 release date, the company is contacting potential buyers regarding not only Jane Got a Gun, but two other high-profile features as well -- the Sundance comedy The Bronze and the Nicholas Hoult/Felicity Jones-starring action-thriller Collide. Screenings for all three films are being held at the moment for potential buyers, but they have bigger sights in mind for Jane in particular. At the moment, lawyer David Boies is trying to court Harvey Weinstein...
