Ipl 2023 Final: In battle between Mentor Dhoni and protege Hardik, Csk face Gujarat Titans (preview)

Ahmedabad, May 27 (Ians) In a battle between mentor Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his protege Hardik Pandya, the four times champions Chennai Super Kings (Csk) will lock horns with defending champions Gujarat Titans in the all-important final of the Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023 at Narendra Modi Stadium, here on Sunday.
Interestingly both these sides — Csk and Gt — had kicked off the season at the same venue, so Ipl 2023 has come full circle.
The Titans had beaten Csk in the opening game. However, earlier this week, Csk levelled the score with a comprehensive win in Qualifier 1 in Chennai. And now, it’s time for the final showdown between the two teams, which are built around the same philosophy.
If one observes closely, both these teams keep things simple, back their players, and create a relaxed team environment. Even Hardik Pandya has praised the Csk team environment recently but on the field, he will look to trump Dhoni.

Dharamsala, May 18 (Ians) While hailing Punjab Kings for taking the decision to retire out Atharva Taide during their 15-run loss to Delhi Capitals, former West Indies fast-bowler Ian Bishop believes that call could have come earlier in the innings.
Chasing 214 at the Hpca Stadium in Dharamshala, Punjab were at 128/3 and needed 86 runs in 30 balls, when they made a tactical move to retire out Taide, who made a 42-ball 55, in the 15th over, bringing an end to a 50-ball 78-run second-wicket partnership with Liam Livingstone, who would go on to make a scintillating 94 off 48 balls.
“The over before, I was getting ready to put on social media – retired out, but I was reluctant in case he did a Rahul Tewatia, and that kind of opprobrium being thrown back at me.”
“But I want to give them credit for actually making the decision, whoever made it, because it’s not an easy decision to make,...

Like, Ishant Sharma continued his resurgence by defending 12 runs in the final over for Delhi Capitals against Gujarat Titans or Piyush Chawla shining with a spell of 2/29 against Punjab Kings, where rest of his Mumbai Indians bowling colleagues were being taken to cleaners.
Amit Mishra is turning out to be a crucial cog in the wheel for Lucknow Super Giants with his flight and dip while Mohit Sharma has been impressive with his off-cutters, slower deliveries at back of the length and holding his own in defending 12 runs in the last over against Lucknow.
Former India left-arm pacer Rp Singh stated that the stellar performances of the four veteran bowlers in Ipl 2023 has reiterated that knowledge and experience cannot be brought from anywhere in cricket and that it is earned only by constantly playing.

Ahmedabad, May 3 (Ians) After suffering a narrow five-run loss to Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans’ opener Shubman Gill had no qualms in admitting that not having any significant partnerships at the top of the order resulted in the defending champions ending up on the losing side.
Chasing 121 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Gujarat were reduced to 32/4 in 6.4 overs. Despite a 62-run stand for the fifth wicket between Abhinav Manohar and captain Hardik Pandya along with Rahul Tewatia hitting three sixes in the 19th over, Gujarat were unable to get over the line.
“We lost only by five runs, and it is mainly because there were no significant partnerships at the top of the order. The odd ball was stopping and coming onto the bat, and their spinners bowled really well on this wicket to control the game. It was difficult for us to hit boundaries,” said Gill in the post-match press conference.

Ahmedabad, May 3 (Ians) After his batting heroics against Gujarat Titans in an Ipl 2023, Delhi Capitals (DC) all-rounder Aman Hakim Khan has revealed that he had a strong desire to utilise the opportunity that came his way when his team-mate Mitchell Marsh fell sick before the game.
Walking into bat at 23/5, Khan scored 51 runs off 44 balls and led the recovery of his side from a precarious situation as DC went on to post a total of 130/8 in their 20 overs against Titans on Tuesday night.
The 26-year-old got a place in the playing eleven, just a few hours before the game and capitalised well on the opportunity as he made an impact with his performance.
“(In earlier matches) I was going to bat at 30 balls 100 required and all of that. I wasn’t thinking much and I wasn’t low on confidence. But in the previous game that I played in Hyderabad,...

New Delhi, May 3 (Ians) Former India cricketers Mohammed Kaif and Irfan Pathan lauded Ishant Sharma for his match-winning bowling performance against Gujarat Titans in an Ipl 2023 game, saying that the experienced pacer used his slower ones and knuckleball perfection to prove his mettle once again.
Delhi Capitals prevented a strong Gujarat Titans side from chasing down a meagre 130 and won the game by 5 runs. The credit for DC’s morale-boosting win goes to their bowlers, especially Ishant Sharma.
The senior India pacer threw in his experience in the game and held his nerve to defend 12 off the last over in yet another low-scoring thriller in Ipl 2023.
“Ishant Sharma once again proved experience can’t be bought in the market. He used the slower ones beautifully and tricked Rahul Tewatia with his knuckleball. He made full use of his experience and the knuckle balls he used in the death overs, were simply brilliant,...

Ahmedabad, May 3 (Ians) Delhi Capitals held on their nerves and walked off with a crucial five-run win in an Ipl 2023 game against the Gujarat Titans and former India cricketer Parthiv Patel feels if skipper Hardik Pandya took a few risks, the home side could have ended the game in their favour.
The Capitals got off to a rough start with the bat but saw Aman Hakim Khan score 51 runs. Mohammed Shami ran through the Delhi top order and they were struggling at 23-5 before the lower middle order helped them put up a competent total of 130-8.
The Titans struggled as well with the bat and failed to chase the total down despite Hardik Pandya scoring 59 runs. Rahul Tewatia ensured some fireworks as he hit Anrich Nortje for three back-to-back sixes in the penultimate over and brought Gujarat back in the game. Ahmedabad, April 26 (Ians) Mumbai Indians (Mi) bowling coach Shane Bond conveyed his dissatisfaction regarding his team’s bowling display against Gujarat Titans, saying that the bowlers had given away too many freebies to David Miller and Abhinav Manohar, who took the game away from Mi.
On the back of an incredible batting display followed by a classy show with the ball, Titans registered a clinical 55-run win over Mi on Tuesday night and jumped to the second spot on the points table.
Bowling first, after a half-century from Shubman Gill (56 off 34) Mi did reasonably well to reduce Gujarat to 101/4 at one point. But a late onslaught by Manohar (42 off 21) and Miller (46 off 22), who shared a 71-run partnership, helped the Titans recover. Then Rahul Tewatia gave the finishing touches to the innings with his unbeaten 20 off 5 as Gt posted 207/6.

Lucknow, April 22 (Ians) Chasing 136 was looking like a walk in the park for Lucknow Super Giants. A wicketless power-play, captain Kl Rahul well-set after making fifty, Gujarat Titans dropping two catches and needing 31 runs off 36 balls with nine wickets in hand, everything was literally going their way for a victory.
But Mohit Sharma and Noor Ahmad picked two wickets each while Shami, despite not picking a wicket, played a crucial part in producing top-notch bowling on a slow pitch to successfully defend 135 and help Gujarat pull off a miraculous seven-run victory in Match No 30 of the Ipl 2023 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, here on Saturday.
Such was the relentless accuracy from Gujarat’s bowlers in the back-end that Lucknow couldn’t hit a boundary in the last 45 balls. Questions will be asked of Rahul, who looked good in reaching his fifty in 38 balls and...

Lucknow, April 22 (Ians) Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bat first against Lucknow Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
A win for Lucknow at their home ground will take them to the top of the points table. Lucknow have won two of their three games at home in Ipl 2023. The pitch for Saturday’s match is the one used by Lucknow for their game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 7, where they won by five wickets.
After winning the toss, Hardik said fast-bowler Alzarri Joseph misses out and left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad comes into the playing eleven. “Looks like a slow track, want to get the best out of it. There is no time to test our batters now.”
“On this wicket, the better option is to bat first. We’re not worried about our record while chasing.

Hyderabad, April 19 (Ians) After losing to five-time champions Mumbai Indians in their Ipl 2023 match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Tuesday, Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Brian Lara admitted that the side is still looking around for a batter in their middle-order who can finish matches like the way Rahul Tewatia and David Miller do.
In chasing 193, Hyderabad had contributions from Mayank Agarwal, captain Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen. But none of the trio could stay long to score big. Though Marco Jansen and Washington Sundar played some good cameos, they weren’t enough for Hyderabad to win the match and are now at ninth place in the points table.

Mohali, April 14 (Ians) Defending champions Gujarat Titans were on course to chase down 154 comfortably, thanks to Shubman Gill’s serene 67 off 49 balls, laced with seven fours and a six.
With seven runs needed off the final over on Thursday night, after Arshdeep Singh conceded only six runs in the 19th over, Gill survived a run-out chance, before Sam Curran uprooted his off-stump on the very next ball, bringing sudden tension into the match.
Curran then nailed two back-to-back yorkers, and David Miller completed the second run with a desperate dive. With four runs needed off the last two balls, Rahul Tewatia calmly finished off the chase by moving across and scooping a full ball from Curran over a short fine leg for four to seal the deal for Gujarat with a ball to spare.

Mohali, April 13 (Ians) Hardik Pandya returned to captain Gujarat Titans as the defending champions won the toss and elected to bowl first against Punjab Kings at the Is Bindra Pca Stadium on Thursday.
Both teams are into this game after facing defeats in their last match. While Gujarat lost to Kolkata Knight Riders as Rinku Singh hit five sixes on the last five balls, Punjab went down to Sunrisers Hyderabad despite captain Shikhar Dhawan making 99 not out in a batting masterclass.
“Just looks like a good wicket, and from whatever I’ve seen it’s good to chase. Was a one-in-a-million defeat (to Kolkata). We are the kind of team that takes it with a smile. Played good cricket until that last over. It happens. It’s a fresh game. We’ll come out and smile, and throw some punches,” said Hardik, who missed the game against Kolkata due to being unwell.

New Delhi, April 4 (Ians) Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first against Delhi Capitals in Match Seven of Ipl 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
Capitals are playing their first home game of the season after 2019 while the Titans are featuring in their first away match of the tournament, with the pitch described to be a flat one with a slight tinge of grass.
After winning the toss, Pandya said South Africa batter David Miller and uncapped India batter B. Sai Sudharsan come in for injured Kane Williamson, who is ruled out of the tournament, and all-rounder Vijay Shankar.
“Not sure how the wicket is going to play. Obviously losing Kane — we’re gutted. Especially for him. As a team, we can manage but are gutted for him. Not much talking in our team. Just about keeping things simple and focusing on controllable.

New Delhi, April 3 (Ians) Delhi Capitals’ bowling attack will be under focus in a bid to bounce back in Ipl 2023 in the comfort of their home ground when they host Gujarat Titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.
The two teams have met only once in Ipl, during last year when Gujarat emerged victorious by 14 runs. Tuesday’s match is also the first time Gujarat will play an away match as part of the tournament returning to the home-and-away format.
Back to playing at their home base for the first time since 2019, Delhi will be itching to put up a much-improved show in all departments of the game after being underwhelming in a 50-run loss to Lucknow Super Giants in their tournament opener.
Their bowlers lacked the cutting edge with the ball, ground fielding was sloppy, and the batting line-up was blown away by Mark Wood’s raw pace.

Ahmedabad, March 30 (Ians) Gujarat Titans were the flavour of Ipl 2022. The newly-created franchise, in its debut season, ran all the way to the trophy, making for a delightful story as all departments of the game clicked in unison throughout the tournament.
Now, Hardik Pandya & Co would be eager to begin from where they left off at their home ground Narendra Modi Stadium last year — secure wins in emphatic fashion. Ipl 2023 opener will see the Titans face off against four-time champions Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad on Friday.
Ipl 2023 has a lot of new initiatives like ‘impact player’ and announcing teams after the toss. But at the same time, there is a return to the good old comfort of the home-and-away format, which had been held back for the last three seasons due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

New Delhi, Sep 21 (Ians) Saba Karim, the former India wicketkeeper-batter and ex-member of the senior men’s selection committee, feels that time is ripe for Indian team think-tank to develop new and young finishers like Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan so that the side has more options in this department for the future.
Tewatia was a key player in Gujarat Titans’ winning Ipl 2022, amassing 217 runs in 16 matches at a high strike rate of 147.62 and forming a formidable finishing pair with South Africa’s explosive left-handed batter David Miller.
Shahrukh, on the other hand, had a patchy time with Punjab Kings in the tournament, making only 117 runs in eight innings at an average of 16.71 and strike rate of 108.33. Moreover, with his form not up to the mark, he wasn’t given consistent enough runs at Punjab to show more of his famed finishing skills.
“I think the time has come now to develop such young cricketers.
