According to its definition on Merriam Webster, the term “hate crime” refers to “any various crimes when motivated by hostility to the victim as a member of a group” based on aspects such as skin color, creed, gender or sexual orientation. If you look at statistics about hate crimes published by the U.S. Department of Justice (from 2022) the majority of these crimes are directed at people from different ethnicities, followed by religion and sexual orientation. Given the widening political and social divide we experience in many cultures, it is definitely an issue we should take seriously, especially when we take a look at some of these incidents and their effect.
