He was by trade, a cabinet maker and following his marriage bought Clare House and the adjacent builder's and undertaker's business. The family prospered modestly and even employed a maid. By the turn of the century the Shorney family had moved to Sussex where they lived at Oak Cottage, Heron's Ghyll.
