Exclusive: Kristin Chenoweth (Schmigadoon!), Kenny Ortega (Julie and the Phantoms) and producers Alan Powell, Steve Barnett and Vicky Patel of Monarch Media are teaming for the docuseries 1300 Miles to Broadway. Inspired by Chenoweth’s Broadway Bootcamp, the series introduces 8th to 12th graders to the world of performing arts through master classes in acting, singing and dancing, and goes on the emotional journey with them as they prepare for a future as performers.
Chenoweth launched Broadway Bootcamp at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center in her Oklahoma hometown of Broken Arrow in 2015, to give talented local kids a taste of real Broadway talent, working with them one-on-one. She brought Broadway director, actor and producer Richard Jay-Alexander into the fold four years ago to strengthen the program. All editions of the camp have taken place in-person with the exception of 2021’s, which was held virtually amidst the pandemic, with kids from 33 states and 8 countries participating.

Kenny Ortega confirmed there are no immediate plans for Julie and the Phantoms to return to Netflix or anywhere else at this time, but the series executive producer teases, “never say never.”
Created by Dan Cross and David Hoge, the musical dramedy tells the story of a young Latina (Madison Reyes) who leads a band of literal phantoms. The series won three Primetime Emmy Awards for the show’s first and only season.
The cancellation of Julie and the Phantoms was announced in December, more than a year after its debut.
“At this particular time, no,” Ortega told Deadline on Friday about whether the show is being shopped elsewhere. “I’m grateful to Netflix for greenlighting the project and for letting Dan, Dave, and I have this time. I feel it’s some of the best work I’ve done for kids and family,...

The reason behind Netflix's cancellation of Julie and the Phantoms is as mysterious as the show's well-dressed villain.
Why cancel a show with an audience score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and nearly a million loyal followers on Instagram?
"Fantoms," as the most devoted fans call themselves, are baffled and heartbroken.
From renowned director Kenny Ortega, Julie and the Phantoms follows 15-year-old Julie Molina (Madison Reyes) a year after her mother's death. When she puts on one of her mom's old CDs, she unwittingly releases the three striking members of the band Sunset Curve.
The kicker: they're all dead.
To convince you why Julie and the Phantoms deserves a second season, let's start with why its first season attracted so many to their screens.
There would be no Julie and the Phantoms without, well, Julie and her phantoms. The bond between the titular characters is the show's beating heart.

The premise of Julie and the Phantoms goes like this: a girl who recently lost her mother and her passion for music is surprised by three ghosts who reignite the musician in her, and as a result, they form a band.
Sounds a bit cheesy, right?
Well, it is, but cheesy is just another word for heartwarming and full of hope and inspiration, which is exactly the thing we all need right about now.
Plus the show hails from the genius that is Kenny Ortega, whose movies never fail to make people smile.
Arguably for all ages, Julie and the Phantoms has been a hit with audiences who love the show for not only its music, but for the chemistry between the characters, and the uplifting storylines.
With each episode being around thirty minutes, it's easy to get lost in the music and binge the entire show in one sitting.

Despite the fact that Julie and the Phantoms has been delighting viewers for two weeks now, Netflix still has not declared it renewed for a season two. We can't explain that, but we are here to talk about what might happen in a hypothetical season two—with a little help from the cast. Julie and the Phantoms follows Julie (Madison Reyes), a high school girl grieving the death of her mother, who discovers that her garage used to be the home studio of a band called Sunset Curve. Back in 1995, the band—consisting of Luke (Charlie Gillespie), Reggie (Jeremy Shada) and Alex (Owen Patrick Joyner)—ate some bad hotdogs and all died just before they got to play a major gig at...

2020 has definitely been an interesting year for Madison Reyes. She went from having no professional acting experience to being cast in the starring role of the Netflix series Julie and the Phantoms. In her on screen debut, Madison has the confidence of a seasoned vet and she’s already getting lots of attention for the role. Since Netflix has a strong history of taking unknown actors and helping them become stars, there’s no doubt that Madison will be one of the next actors to join that list. For now though, she is enjoying every moment of the success of Julie

Kenny Ortega's latest musical masterpiece Julie and the Phantoms hit Netflix on Sept. 10, and so far, all eyes are on its star Madison Reyes. The series follows a young girl with a passion for music who befriends a band of ghosts, but its Reyes and her incredible talent that steal the spotlight. The 16-year-old plays the titular character on the series, and from the moment she sings in the first episode, it's clear that she is destined for greatness. From her incredible acting to her show-stopping performances, you would never guess that this is actually her first role.
Before booking the part of Julie, Reyes was a regular student at a performing arts school. Though she always had an interest in singing and acting, she didn't really start pursuing it until her family moved to Pennsylvania. In fact, Ortega's hit franchise High School Musical was a big inspiration for her.

Imagine an episode of a crime drama without suspenseful music right before the villain goes in for the kill. Or a romantic comedy without the crescendo of the orchestra right before a kiss. Whether we realize it or not, music plays its own vital role on television, and so do the songwriters behind it. Madison Reyes and Charlie Gillespie, stars of Netflix’s “Julie and the Phantoms,” are some of the youngest in the game. At ages 16 and 22, the pair wrote their first-ever song for television last fall while on the set of the fantasy musical-comedy series, which premiered Thursday. It all started when they were working on a dance number for a song that had yet to be written. The two decided to sneak off and write it themselves — and what came out was a love letter to one of director Kenny Ortega‘s greatest hits. “Both of us...

Before the pandemic, Kenny Ortega was hard at work on a new series about a teenage girl who rediscovers her passion for music when she starts a band with three ghosts from the past. As Ortega was reviewing a scene, something struck him as oddly familiar.
“For years and years and years, people have been asking why I’m not doing a ‘Hocus Pocus’ sequel,” Ortega says, referring to his cult classic film that starred Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker. “I think Bette and Kathy and Sarah and I have all asked that question and wondered ourselves. And while I was in post-production before the quarantine, I was looking at the monitor at ‘Julie and the Phantoms,’ and I thought, ‘Oh, my God, this has a little bit of ‘Hocus Pocus’ running through it.”
With musical dance numbers, humor, larger-than-life fantastical storylines and, yes, ghosts, “Julie and the Phantoms...

The rules of the “Julie and the Phantoms” world and its omnipresent afterlife are deeply confusing. In 1995, three members of pop-punk band Sunset Curve die suddenly after eating bad hot dogs (yes). In 2020, they reappear in their old studio, find a living friend in astonished teen Julie (Madison Reyes) and discover that when they play with her, the world can not only hear them, but see them until the moment the music ends. “What kind of ghosts are we?!” one asks in thrilled confusion, to which another replies, “who cares!” And honestly, after watching all nine episodes of this first season, I have to agree. No, none of this makes any sense even within the vague guidelines of mystical nonsense, and sure, their ghost adventures become very silly, very quickly. But who cares! “Julie and the Phantoms” is just fun and adorable enough for none of that to really matter.

This review of Julie and the Phantoms contains no spoilers.
Probably the only thing you need to know about Julie and the Phantoms before going in is that its executive producer is Kenny Ortega. If that doesn’t instantly ring a bell – well, he’s the guy who directed the High School Musical movies, the Descendants movies, and, of course, the evergreen Halloween classic Hocus Pocus. This nine-part supernatural teen drama is the first of his projects for Netflix, and it’s just as charming, warm, and finger-snappingly musical as you’d expect.
Julie (newcomer Madison Reyes) is a 15-year-old singer-songwriter who recently lost her mother. Her grief has put a damper on her creativity, and as a result she’s close to getting kicked out of her school’s prestigious music program. Then she meets cute up-and-coming indie rock band Sunset Curve and rediscovers her voice. Her teachers are impressed,...
