Every version of Annie since the Broadway original has aimed younger and younger. John Huston's 1982 movie cut the child-confounding songs "We'd Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover" and "New Deal for Christmas," and added two ditties about Annie's dog. This new flick scraps the 1933 setting altogether and plops Annie into contemporary Harlem, here a sunny bodega playground. Now, in "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile," your clothes aren't "Beau Brummell–y," but "Chanel, Gucci." Producers Jay-z and Will and Jada Pinkett Smith must have beamed when they discovered that rhyme — and, to be fair, their three children are fashion-forward. There's a sense that neither they nor director Will Gluck know what normal kids — the kind they need to buy tickets to ...

Werner Herzog's take on the story of a semi-feral youth who turned up in 19th-century Nuremberg stays true in fact and spirit with the casting of the unforgettable Bruno Schleinstein
Director: Werner Herzog
Entertainment grade: A
History grade: A–
In 1828, an unknown and semi-feral youth turned up in the German town of Nuremberg. He could barely speak or walk and could only write a name: Kaspar Hauser. The mystery made him a celebrity across Europe.
People
Werner Herzog's film begins precisely as Hauser himself described his origins, once he began to speak. He claimed to have been imprisoned in a cellar for his entire life, given bread and water and allowed no possessions apart from a wooden toy horse. Finally, a man appeared who taught him to say one sentence – "I want to be a cavalryman, as my father was" – and the word "horse". The man left him...

This week I had the pleasure of attending a lecture at the Morgan Library and Museum. I can't recall the last time I went to a lecture so I felt very Schlegel Sisters from Howard's End (1992). The things people used to do for entertainment!
The lecture was actually more of a threeway discussion. The museum paired influential fashion historian Valerie Steele with famed designer Anna Sui (who turns out to be a movie buff) and Oscar nominated costume designer Deborah Nadoolman (Coming to America) whose credits include 80s hits like Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Three Amigos! (remember that one?) and even the "Thriller" music video! So herewith the tidbits I felt you'd enjoy most from the event.
Some actresses are not just movie stars, but fashion icons.
Faye Dunaway & Audrey Hepburn
The general gist of the event was in delineating what separates fashion from costume design and how...

So here we go, our first Double Feature film review with Maggie from The Costumer’s Guide. First up, Chris from Clothes on Film gives his thoughts on The Young Victoria:
While it ticks all the boxes of what many deem to be a typical costume drama, e.g. upper class backdrop, domestic intrigue, suppressed lust, elaborate sets and, of course, costumes, The Young Victoria (2009) is a more valid commentary on the burden of extreme wealth and duty as barrier to happiness. The film is not always successful, as director Jean-Marc Vallée generally prioritises flair over feeling, though a committed and engaging central romance kept lively by screenwriter Julian Fellowes pulls the story on through.
Most unusual about young Alexandrina Victoria (played by Emily Blunt) for a girl of the time is how much she disliked clothes. This is not to imply Her Majesty would have preferred to run around naked,...

Robert Pattinson tops all the best-dressed lists, but surely those voting are confusing good looks with style
I'm not sure I understand these 100 best-dressed men lists. The most recent I read had some entries that were inarguable – Tom Ford, Mark Ronson – but a lot that set the Wtf-o-meter off the scale, including David Cameron and the number one, actor Robert Pattinson.
Now, no one's going to argue Pattinson isn't a good-looking man, but I'm not sure his appeal rests on his clothes. The best-dressed list offers as proof the fact that typing his name into Google yields 9m results. The issue is that a hefty proportion of those are fan sites set up by excitable teenage girls, historically not the greatest judges of male sartorial elegance, given that over the years they've variously screamed at the Bay City Rollers, East 17 and Little Jimmy Osmond. I have seen video evidence...
