It’s been a minute since we checked in on Máximo, old and young, and Las Colinas. Actually, it’s been like 16 months in the real world, which is why it was a wise choice for the “Acapulco” Season 3 trailer to open with the exposition it did.
Máximo (Eugenio Derbez): “Hugo, do you remember where my rags-to-riches life story left off? It all started with a job as Las Colinas. I told you about my big promotion and Julia and I getting together — but there’s still so much more I haven’t told you.”
Smash Cut To: Season 2’s big cliffhanger moment. Oh that’s right, (old) Máximo has a grownup daughter we didn’t even know about. The trailer doesn’t really get into that storyline, but certainly the season will.

In 2020, we were introduced to Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, a unique musical dramedy about a computer coder (Jane Levy) who suddenly began to hear people’s innermost thoughts through song, allowing for many impressive performances and some of our favorite moments of TV to this day. We’ll take another season, movie, anything! “I’m sitting right now in the production office of Zoey’s because we actually shoot on this exact same lot,” Skylar Astin (who played Max) tells TV Insider while discussing his current hit show, So Help Me Todd. “I’m currently in what was [Zoey’s creator] Austin Winsberg’s office. So it’s always a bit of a time warp to come here to work.

Over the course of a handful of months, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist creator Austin Winsberg experienced a creative and emotional roller-coaster ride of highs and lows, beginning with the cancellation of the adored but oft-ratings-challenged NBC musical dramedy that drew many of its storylines from his family’s very personal experiences with his father’s rare condition, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), to its revival by Roku for the holiday-themed TV movie Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas, which was made at a lightning-quick pace, deftly wrapping up the series’ lingering storylines while subtly leaving the door open for future installments.

One year ago, the team behind NBC’s “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” was devastated when the broadcast network pulled the plug on the musical series after two seasons. At the time, the show’s cast, as well as creator Austin Winsberg, were vocal about how sad they were about the untimely end; after pitching it around and hoping for a pickup, it seemed to be dead in the water.
And then the Roku Channel came around and offered a chance to wrap it up in the shape of a movie; the two-hour holiday pic focused on the Clarke family’s first Christmas without patriarch Mitch (Peter Gallagher), who died at the end of the first season.
“We had ended Season 2 on a massive cliffhanger, but we had many new stories we still wanted to tell,” says Winsberg. “To be able to create a resolution, give the fans clarity and live with...

Last week, more than 400 TV creators and showrunners — all of them women — sent letters to top executives at Hollywood studios demanding that specific safety protocols be put in place for pregnant employees in states where abortion has been outlawed, or soon will be. Now, letters of support signed by 594 men — including J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Greg Berlanti, Donald Glover, Aaron Sorkin, David E. Kelley, Taika Waititi and Ryan Murphy — have been sent to the same companies.
The text of the letter is short, simply saying the undersigned stand with their “female, trans & non-binary showrunner colleagues in demanding a response from our employers regarding the imminent crisis” at hand. It was delivered by replying-all to the first letter, and was sent to Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount, Apple, NBC Universal, Amazon, Lionsgate and AMC.
These activist correspondences have been instigated by the Supreme Court’s June 24 Dobbs decison, which overturned Roe v.

Streaming platform Roku has officially picked up its first Emmy Awards nominations.
The company’s free, ad-supported Roku Channel was recognized with two Emmy nods for rom-com movie “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas” — for television movie and choreography for scripted programming — while Bill Burr landed a nomination for actor in a short-form comedy or drama series for comedy anthology series “Immoral Compass.”
Roku picked up the streaming rights to “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas” from Lionsgate, after NBC canceled primetime musical comedy series “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” after two seasons. And “Immoral Compass” was originally set at Quibi, the defunct mobile streaming service whose assets Roku snapped up in January 2021 for under 100 million.
While both projects were rescues, the Roku Channel’s Emmy nominations are a feather in its cap as the company vies for attention and competes against larger streamers with multibillion-dollar budgets.

After “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” was canceled by NBC last summer, showrunner Austin Winsberg was given a unique opportunity to offer closure to fans in the form of a Christmas movie on an entirely different network. The Roku Channel came to the show’s rescue and Winsberg was tasked with developing a holiday-themed movie that could work on its own while also continuing the storylines of Season 2, such as Max (Skylar Astin) suddenly developing Zoey’s (Jane Levy) musical powers. “It had to check a lot of boxes, and then on top of that, I didn’t want to treat it like two episodes of the show,” says Winsberg in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “I wanted to treat it like an actual movie.”

“Acapulco” has been renewed for a second season at Apple TV Plus.
The Spanish and English-language comedy series stars Enrique Arrizon as Máximo Gallardo, whose dream comes true when, in 1984, he gets the job of a lifetime as a cabana boy at the hottest resort in Acapulco. But he soon realizes the job is far more complicated than he ever imagined as all of his beliefs and morals come into question. Eugenio Derbez narrates the series and plays the present-day version of Máximo.
Season 2 will see young Máximo in 1985, contending with upheaval at the resort, unexpected problems at home and a new love interest who just might rival the girl of his dreams. In the present, older Máximo (Derbez) arrives in Acapulco, where he encounters various people from his past — for better and worse. It’s a good time to be Eugenio Derbez.
At last week’s Screen Actors Guild awards, “Coda” took home the top prize for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. The film, which features Derbez as choir director “Mr. V,” immediately saw its Oscar buzz skyrocket. Now there’s more good news for Derbez: His Apple TV+ comedy series “Acapulco” has just been renewed for Season 2.
“Acapulco” stars Derbez as the present-day iteration of Maximo Gallardo Ramos, a wealthy man living in Malibu who recounts his rags-to-riches journey to his nephew. Viewers learn that he began his career by working as a pool boy at the Las Colinas Resort in Acapulco, with Enrique Arrizon playing Maximo’s younger self and Erick Saldaña as an even younger Maximo. The bilingual series was loosely inspired by the 2017 Lionsgate film “How to Be a Latin Lover,” which also stars Derbez...

Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas was filled with song as the Roku Channel movie delivered several holiday tunes, a Taylor Swift number and even a rendition of “Call Me Maybe” by Mary Steenburgen.
But one of the most memorable musical moments came courtesy of a face-off, of sorts, when Max crooned “Just the Two of Us,” while Zoey countered with a high-energy performance of “We Need a Little Christmas.” The intricate, zany hand choreography during Zoey’s half of the mashup is made even more impressive by the fact that star Jane Levy had very little time to learn the moves.

“I’ve absolutely loved working with Lifetime over the past few years and couldn’t be more thrilled to continue my relationship with them as an actor and now as a writer and producer as well. I’m delighted to announce my screenwriting debut with ‘Reindeer Games,’ a romantic comedy about love, loss, and the importance of true community. I’m looking forward to working with Lifetime to bring more stories like this to life,” Drew said.

“Acapulco,” a romantic comedy series very loosely inspired by the 2017 film “How to Be a Latin Lover,” is a vibrantly hued trip down ’80s memory lane in a gorgeous resort with endearing staffers and guests.
But the Apple TV Plus show, wholesome and sweet like “Ted Lasso,” carried a level of creative risk: Its near-even split between English- and Spanish-speaking lines meant that viewers would be watching a show with subtitles. “Acapulco” presents a genuine portrayal of what it could be like to be a Mexican employee at a hotel that forces them to speak English on the premises. The series, which debuted earlier this month, currently has a perfect score on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes and is part of a growing number of multilingual TV series, including “Tehran,” also on Apple TV Plus, and Amazon Prime’s Italian crime drama “ZeroZeroZero.”
