"Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" is back in theaters for its 25th anniversary this week. Some "Star Wars" fans will doubtlessly be celebrating (and turning out to make "The Phantom Menace" a box office smash once more) and I won't begrudge them that. But sorry, I'm still not on board with prequel trilogy revisionism.
I was born the same year as "The Phantom Menace" premiered — it's the movie that introduced me to "Star Wars." I know my generation has largely accepted the prequels, but while I can appreciate their ideas, they're still too hindered by shoddy storytelling and flat acting for me to sign off on the execution. "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" is good (see our choices for best episodes here), but a cartoon spin-off set between the cracks of the "Star Wars" saga can...

Guts and Griffith are the protagonists and antagonists of Berserk, and Miura sensei might have been influenced by his past experiences to give birth to such an iconic rivalry. During an interview, he mentioned his obsession, and it showed that he can be pretty competitive, just the way his characters are. The shonen genre in anime is one of the most popular, as a plethora of shows reach an insane level of popularity that is hard to match. However, this genre has a gem, which is Yoshihiro Togashi’s Hunter x Hunter. Although the series has a faltering pace, Togashi-san’s manga remains one of the most popular manga series to be ever written.
Gon and Hisoka in the Hunter Exam arc
Both the manga and the anime are commercially successful, thanks to the series’ unorthodox style of narration and world development. However, the series would not have been so popular if it followed the original storyline that the artist had initially planned out in his mental map. Moreover, the series’ editor played a key role in changing the story of our adorable protagonist in the most important arc of the series.

Kentaro Miura’s Berserk is one of the top dark fantasy anime/manga to date, and Gut’s Dragon Slayer sword is featured in every image of the franchise. It has now become almost like a trademark for the protagonist to slug around the huge slab of iron.
However, it is because of the sword’s massive size that Guts can use it to slay the apostles of God. Every fallen apostle adds to the sword’s strength, making it more and more effective every kill. Let’s say that Dragon Slayer is no less popular than Guts himself.
So, indeed it should be surprising for Berserk fans to know that Miura might not like Gut’s sword as much as everyone else.

While Henry Cavill defined Superman for a decade, he has now moved on from the franchise and has been working on new projects. The actor was last seen in Matthew Vaughn’s spy comedy Argylle and is set to feature in the historical action comedy The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. The actor is also working on a Highlander reboot.
During the premiere of the Guy Ritchie directorial, Henry Cavill reportedly made fun of his unlucky streak as Superman. While talking about his collaborations with Ritchie, he mentioned his alleged post-credits scene in the director’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. He also took a dig at his appearance in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam while doing so.

Although the 1997 anime adaptation of the story under the studio named Olm Team Iguchi, did the best they could with the available resources they had, however, the difficult journey of our main character, Guts, his quest for revenge, and his search for peace of mind, were something that has never been fully explored in the anime.

Before his sudden passing in March 2024, Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama had been working on numerous ongoing and upcoming projects, including the upcoming Dragon Ball Daima anime, as well as the ongoing Dragon Ball Super manga, illustrated by Toyotarō. The manga has been ongoing since 2015 and while it had some breaks over the years, the most recent one being in 2022, it has been confirmed by Shueisha that the manga series will be going on an indefinite hiatus.
This decision makes sense, seeing how Toriyama-sensei’s death impacted the anime and manga world. And while this manga was partially Toyotarō’s, Toriyama was nevertheless the heart and soul of the series and he provided the story ideas and basic plotlines that Toyotarō drew. This article contains spoilers for "Gen V" episode 6.
Part of the reason Prime Video's "The Boys" has been acclaimed is the ways it has adapted its source material, a satirical superhero gore-fest by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The comic has its moments of pathos, but it's mostly just a vile splatterfest. There's so much bad taste abound in the 72 issues that it often makes you wish your brain could spit it out.
"The Boys" TV series (developed by Eric Kripke) keeps the violence and dark humor, but it sharpens the comic's genre critique while updating it for modern politics. The superheroes of "The Boys" are still stand-ins for the rot of corporate America and celebrity culture. However, the TV show explores its characters with more sincerity (take the musical scene in episode 5). Kripke's "The Boys" doesn't laugh at its characters (at least not the leads) in the same way that Ennis' does.

"Army of Darkness" turns 30 this week and enjoys a well-earned reputation as a horror-comedy classic. Indeed, the influence of Sam Raimi's filmmaking stretches beyond the Pacific Ocean. Kentaro Miura, the late, legendary manga artist responsible for "Berserk," named Raimi and Tim Burton as his favorite filmmakers. In an interview (transcribed into English), Miura praised these directors as "offbeat," noting, "it's strange that a person can be that offbeat and big at the same time."
Miura would know; "Berserk" is one of the bleakest, most violent stories you'll ever read. Some of its splash pages are less action spreads and more ethereal tableaus. However, it's often cited as the crown jewel of fantasy manga. He and Raimi were so alike, in fact, that Miura started to get concerns about copyright. He recounted:

The series has run since 1989 and its ending still isn't in sight, but its most famous story arc is "The Golden Age." Stretching volumes 3-14, it tells how Guts joined the mercenary group the Band of the Hawk and befriended its leader, Griffith. Readers know the two will turn into enemies, as Griffith becomes the fifth God Hand member "Femto" and Guts becomes the lonesome "Black Swordsman," but "The Golden Age" is the story of how.
"The Golden Age" is the most self-contained "Berserk" story and thus the most adaptable. Outside the manga, it was first retold in 1997 as a 25-episode anime by the studio Oriental Light and Magic. 15 years later in 2012, Studio 4°C adapted "The Golden Age" once more...

The first short story in Andrzej Sapkowski's epic saga was simply titled "The Witcher." It was printed in the Polish fantasy and sci-fi magazine Nowa Fantastyka in 1986, as part of a contest. Sapkowski didn't win the top prize then, but readers were attracted to Geralt of Rivia's struggle to free a princess from an unfair curse. That encouraged Sapkowski, and in 1994, "Blood of Elves" became the first full novel about the mutant monster-hunter's trials. Gradually, Geralt's popularity trickled into the worldwide consciousness, helped along by the 2007 video game adaptation by CD Project.
Geralt's (portrayed by Henry Cavill) first adventure is the third episode of Netflix's "The Witcher." Titled "Betrayer Moon," the myth of the striga becomes a showcase for Geralt's gruff brand of empathy. In his world, monsters can't be allowed to roam free, but when he can, he saves them from their fates. The world of "The Witcher" is often cruel,...

Folks! It is finally happening. One of the best anime shows ever made, as well as the one good adaptation of one of the greatest manga of all time, is finally coming to streaming.
At a time when availability is becoming an important issue in media as big corporations are erasing entire titles from existence with the push of a button, concepts like piracy as historical preservation are being discussed in a new light, even by creators. If there is literally no legal way to watch a show, should you pirate it? Does it hurt a show when, after years of unavailability and bootlegging, it finally becomes available? "Neon Genesis Evangelion" was a hit on Netflix when it finally became available to stream and got everyone talking about it for the first time in years.
Thankfully, we don't have to debate this any longer, at least not when it comes...

One can contest that dark fantasy manga is held up to the highest artistic standards within the medium. From its early years with Go Nagai’s “Devil Man” to the iconic “Berserk” from Kentaro Miura, the genre has been defined by ridiculously detailed and stunning visuals. In this regard, It is obvious that artist Gonbe Shinkawa draws heavy influence from those that defined the genre before him, as his panels can be utterly stunning and on par with the best out there. However, dialogue-heavy panels can feature odd facial expressions and the grandiose battle...

In a true “holy shit” moment, manga publisher Young Animal announced June 7 that Kentaro Miura’s unfinished manga masterpiece Berserk is coming back with new chapters just over a year after the author’s death. The series abruptly ended after 30-some years of entrancing artwork and tremendously complex storylines when Miura’s apprentices at Studio Gaga put the finishing touches on his final in-progress chapter. But in the time since, Studio Gaga has been working closely with Miura’s longtime friend and closest confidant, Kouji Mori, to bring Miura’s unique vision to its intended conclusion.
This is welcome news for fans who invested decades into following Guts’s quest for vengeance and Griffith’s increasingly demonic exploits. Even before its sudden conclusion, fans were eager to see the story wrap up as the releases became fewer and farther between over the years and the story seemed to be veering further and further off-track.

This article contains spoilers for Elden Ring.
Whether they’re hiding in plain sight or camping out in secret locations, Easter eggs and references are a proud tradition in video games (and pretty much every other medium). Previous FromSoftware titles are flush with those secrets, and Elden Ring is certainly no different.
Hidetaka Miyazaki has a history of inserting references to other properties into his projects, so when gamers finally got the chance to start exploring Elden Ring, they were sure to keep their eyes peeled. Their dedication resulted in the discovery of references to some of Miyazaki’s most famous sources of inspiration and even Easter eggs related to FromSoftware’s previous games.
Since Elden Ring is a huge open-world experience, gamers have only scratched its surface, and as such have only discovered a handful of what is likely a legion of Easter eggs. Expect this article to grow as more are discovered,...

It’s perfectly understandable if you were too shocked by the surprise release of the Elden Ring trailer to properly analyze it the first time around, but another look at the surprisingly bountiful preview reveals some stunning details that are easy to miss.
In fact, the seemingly chaotic Elden Ring trailer is filled with so many fascinating little things that you really start to appreciate how it was clearly carefully constructed to convey a surprising amount of information about the still very mysterious game.
Why we can’t wait to see all the secrets people discover in the latest Elden Ring trailer, here are a few of the more subtle details we spotted upon a second viewing.
Can Elden Ring Players Jump?

In a category that is mostly dominated by Hollywood productions, particularly since epic films demand a rather significant budget, it is also interesting to highlight that Asia has also had its share of epics, most of which are of significant quality, even considered masterpieces. Samurais, historic events, wuxia, fantasy are all elements included in the movies of the list, which, once more, aims at diversity.
Most of these films are co-productions from companies from many countries. “Mongol” for example is a co-production between Russia, Germany, Kazakhstan and China. Instead of filling the titles with countries, we chose to just mention the country that the main story is based. Thus, in the case of “Mongol”, Mongolia is mentioned as the country of origin.
Without further ado, here are 20 excellent Asian epic movies, in alphabetic order

I thought I was prepared for anything Berserk and the Band of the Hawk threw at me after the tutorial. In a hellish landscape of severed heads, I waded through demonic creatures as a muscular man with a gigantic sword. Each hit caused red splashes to arch across the screen, unapologetically bathing everything in blood. I had no idea how much more twisted things were going to become.
Kentaro Miura’s dark Berserk manga provided the perfect backdrop for a Musou-style game. I followed Guts’ story, from the Golden Age Arc through to The Hawk of the Millennium Empire Arc. The basic plot showed how he joined The Band of the Hawk after losing a fight to their leader, Griffith. Yet, welcoming these new companions into his heart seals Guts’ fate. As Guts becomes a cog in accomplishing Griffith’s dream, everyone is tipped into a world of monsters, madness,...

While the creator of the Berserk manga, Kentaro Miura, announced that he has put the original medium in hiatus, NBC Universal released to the public a teaser for a new anime adaptation, that will follow Guts’s “Black Swordsman” persona, which has not been much explored in the previous adaptations. The title is set to debut later this year, although the format has not been revealed yet.

There's still a lot of mystery surrounding the new Bersek anime project. Is it a new anime series? Ova? Or film? Still, it's exciting that after eighteen years, their could potentially be a new Berserk project that moves past The Golden Age arc. Berserk is a Japanese, fantasy manga series from celebrated mangaka Kentaro Miura. Set in a medieval Europe-inspired dark fantasy world, the story centers on the characters of Guts, a lone mercenary, and Griffith, the leader of a mercenary band called the Band of the Hawk. Oriental Light and Magic produced a 25-episode anime adaptation that aired from 1997-98. A three-part animated film series was released in 2012 which retold the Golden Age arc, which was previously depicted in the '98 anime.

A few years ago, a friend introduced me to the anime version of Berserk. Based off the ongoing manga series of the same name by Kentaro Miura, the 25 episode anime covers the Black Swordsman arc as well as The Golden Age. The anime is quite honestly one of, if not my all time favorite. And, though I’m disappointed the series did not continue past the initial 25 episodes, I find myself re-watching the show often. From the animation to the amazing music by Susumu Hirasawa, Berserk has captivated and entertained me repeatedly. There is an ongoing production of movies currently being produced, but I find they don’t have the depth and attention to detail the series possessed, though they are entertaining and fun to watch.

Max Factory continues their spectacular line of characters from one of the most violently beautiful manga/anime series ever, Berserk. Admittedly, I’m not as caught up with my anime as I would like to be so, when a friend suggested I borrow his copy of Berserk, I did. What an adventure. First released in the late nineties, Berserk is based of Kentaro Miura’s ongoing Manga series. The anime only adapted the first story arc of the series, but recently the first three films of what is planned to be an adaptation of the entire series have been released, with the English cast all reprising their roles of the lead characters, Guts, Griffith, and today’s feature, Casca.
If you’re a fan of Berserk then you’re going to want to pick up this figure. If you have yet to become acquainted with this series get to your local comic or anime shop.

For newcomers to Kentaro Miura’s Beserk, The Golden Age Arc I – The Egg of the King will be a delightfully gory anime adventure. The first installment of the three-part series mixes middle-age architecture with fantastical elements drawn from Greek mythology. It’s one of the more serious anime on the market that doesn’t waste time with silly jokes and puns. There are even a couple epic siege scenes that appear to be inspired by Lord of the Rings – and one scene that reminded me of the siege on Kings Landing in Game of Thrones.
From the moment you begin watching it, you’ll relish in the brutal actions of Guts, a mercenary who feels more like a samurai gone rōnin. Even when the Arc I slams to a close, without any definitive ending, you’ll still be anxious to see part 2. Unfortunately, if you’re a fan of...

The film is scheduled to run for about 107 minutes and so far carry an R18+ rating given by Japan’s Film Classification and Rating Committee (Eirin) for “extremely provocative sexual content” on October 16th. But, the new movie poster and trailer list a R15+ rating.
The Gigazine website reports there are now plans to resubmit the film to Eirin for the R15+ rating, but if it stays designated as R18+, theaters will be required to restrict the film to viewers 18 years old or older.

Now this is a piece of news that brings a tear to an eye (and not ironically, sarcastically or in any bad way speaking) – the Japanese government announced anime director Hayao Miyazaki as one of this year’s 15 winners of the Person of Cultural Merit honor on Tuesday.
Hayao Miyazaki is best known for his animated films produced under Studio Ghibli, such as Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Ponyo. He is now deep in production of his latest work, an anime “with lots of airplanes” and a projected 2013 release date.
The Japanese government awards the cultural honor every November to people who contributed to Japanese culture for many years (something similar to an Award for lifetime achievement). The winners of The Order of Cultural Merit, highest order, are decorated by the Emperor himself in the Imperial Palace on November 3 — a national holiday called Cultural Day. This year’s...
