Marianne Metivier’s debut feature “The Splendour of Life” (“Une splendeur de vivre”) is set to start principal photography at locations across Canada and the Philippines, the producers revealed at the Cannes Film Festival.
The ensemble cast includes Camille Rutherford (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Garance Marillier (“Raw”), Sue Prado (“Your Mother’s Son”), Kyrie Samodio (“Hito”) and Amaryllis Tremblay (“Genesis”).
Set against a lush countryside backdrop, Marie (Rutherford) questions her relationship, while Noée (Marillier) grieves her father. In a stifling Montreal, Eva (Kyrie Samodio) searches for stability as Jeanne (Tremblay) plans her departure.
Canadian-Filipino Metivier won acclaim for her short “She Who Wears the Rain” that was selected for the Berlinale Short Film Competition in 2020.
Geneviève Gosselin-g. of Canada’s Le Foyer Films, known for “Richelieu”, partners with Alexa Rivero of France’s Altamar Films (Venice 2021 winner “The Great Movement”) and Wilfredo Manalang of the Philippines’ Fusee Media (Cannes 2022 winner “Plan 75”), as producers.

By now, it has already been established that Imu is going to be the main villain of One Piece. However, the veil on the character has not been lifted yet. He is still as mysterious as when he first appeared.
But that has not stopped fans from stringing together various details about the villain to figure out his powers. In one such theory, Imu’s Devil Fruit has been speculated, and it’s too good to be ignored.

According to a fan theory, Imu’s potential Devil fruit could be something related to the night. Just like how Luffy had consumed the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, Imu must have consumed the fruit that juxtaposes Luffy’s fruit.
Imu’s Devil Fruit could be based on the primordial Greek Goddess of Night, Nyx. Imu’s appearance, habits, and...

One Piece has always been one of the most popular anime. For the last 25 years, Eiichiro Oda’s magnum opus has been ruling over the Shonen genre. Monkey D. Luffy’s journey to become the King of Pirates has taken him through several perilous journeys and the fans have always been a part of it. Everyone knows Luffy as the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika user and the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates.
Due to the mangaka’s habit of creating mysteries, fans often make their own theories. But recently, Eiichiro Oda revealed the original design of Monkey D. Luffy and the fans were not ready for it. Like most creators, Oda sensei had initially thought of different designs for Luffy. When the initial design was published online, fans quickly noticed a major difference between the two versions.

If Criterion24/7 hasn’t completely colonized your attention every time you open the Channel––this is to say: if you’re stronger than me––their May lineup may be of interest. First and foremost I’m happy to see a Michael Roemer triple-feature: his superlative Nothing But a Man, arriving in a Criterion Edition, and the recently rediscovered The Plot Against Harry and Vengeance is Mine, three distinct features that suggest a long-lost voice of American movies. Meanwhile, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s Antiwar Trilogy four by Sara Driver, and a wide collection from Ayoka Chenzira fill out the auteurist sets.
Series-wise, a highlight of 1999 goes beyond the well-established canon with films like Trick and Bye Bye Africa, while of course including Sofia Coppola, Michael Mann, Scorsese, and Claire Denis. Films starring Shirley Maclaine, a study of 1960s paranoia, and Columbia’s “golden era” (read: 1950-1961) are curated; meanwhile, The Breaking Ice,...

There are several theories surrounding One Piece. Eiichiro Oda has created his magnum opus in such a manner that it has no limitations for imagination. Most of the fan theories sound bizarre, but fans still believe them as if it could happen. For most parts, they cannot wait for Eiichiro Oda’s revelations and create their own theories.
Even though Oda’s imagination exceeds them, they are the happiest ones once they get to experience the revelations. There is a particular One Piece fan theory that explores the tale of Joyboy and how his whereabouts came to be known. It also explains Monkey D. Luffy’s true abilities and has enough ground to melt every One Piece fan’s mind.

One Piece has often surprised the fans with revelations that did not cross their minds. The most recent scenario of Eiichiro Oda completely making a fool out of the fans when he revealed Monkey D. Luffy’s Devil Fruit to be a Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, and not Gomu Gomu no Mi. The revelation happened during the Wano arc, which made Luffy transform into Gear 5 and defeat Kaido.
Even though Eiichiro Oda fooled the fans, they were overjoyed when they saw Luffy’s transformation. After knowing that nothing is out of bounds for Oda sensei, fans have begun to feel there might be another Devil Fruit whose true nature and abilities are yet to be revealed. The mentioned Devil Fruit is Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Human, which belongs to Tony Tony Chopper.

Kevin B. Lee (left) in conversation with Tsai Ming-liang.Even though he didn't have a new film to premiere, Tsai Ming-liang was the guest of honor at this year's Locarno Film Festival. Tsai received the Pardo alla carriera achievement award at the Piazza Grande; was the subject of Moving Portraits, an exhibition at the Il Rivellino gallery; presented a screening of his 2020 film Days; and delivered several talks and masterclasses. One such talk was “On the Future of Cinema”: the centerpiece of a Locarno Film Festival initiative exploring the medium’s technological and cultural transformations. The face of Locarno’s Future of Cinema programming is the scholar, media artist, and critic Kevin B. Lee. A prolific video essayist, Lee has produced over 350 works of audiovisual criticism, and with his award-winning Transformers: The Premake (2014), he introduced and popularized the “desktop documentary” format. Unfolding as a real-time screen recording of Lee’s MacBook,...

With apologies to Ken and Benny Safdie’s glasses, 2023 has been the year of One Piece. In fact, many scientists believe that every year since the manga series first released in 1997 has been the year of One Piece. But 2023 has truly been a standout thanks to a big-budget video game to start the year, the manga continuing to sell at a blistering pace, the imminent release of the Netflix live action adaptation, and of course the anime and its eye-popping (as of now) 1074 episodes sending the internet into a frenzy.
It’s One Piece and creator Eiichiro Oda’s world; we’re just living in it. Thanks to everyone else for playing.
I say this all (mostly) in jest, but it’s true: the series has seemingly been more popular than ever, despite its obvious barrier to entry given the length. But the length is, in every sense, what shows how remarkable One Piece is.
