You might have noticed the coverage of this years ultra-sized Fantasia film festival in the Reviews and Interviews column of the site from a number of contributors taking in the festival: Mack, Shelagh, Peter, Todd, and myself, as well as a plethora of other Twitch writers hither and yon. Covering a festival of this size is a massive undertaking and I hope you enjoyed all the updates, interviews, and reviews. Rest assured there are still a few more to come. As Fantasia winds down with a screening of Metropolis Extended Edition and full orchestra, it seems to have been a raging success this year across the board. The festival announced its Jury and Audience awards, and they are below. It seems that the Subversive Serbia sidebar was a big hit, with controversial A Serbian Film getting one of the big audience awards.

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. Even though Film Junk followers would probably prefer to read current Tiff film reviews than a review of an older science fiction film, I have decided to submit this review of “Babylon A.D.” And at the risk of further enforcing the view that I have a poor taste in films, my review is generally a favorable one in contrast to popular opinion. I was aware that this film did poorly at the box office, but I didn’t realize how many bad reviews this film received until after I had watched the film and checked out the reviews on the Internet. The reason why I watched this film is that I try to watch all the high profile science fiction movies regardless of audience reception.

20th Century Fox has set Mathieu Kassovitz's Babylon A.D. for DVD and Blu-ray release on January 6th 2009. If you were one of the few who actually got a chance to see the film during it's blink-and-you'll-miss-it theatrical run you'll know just how much the film lost the plot by the 3rd act.
The first half of the film is actually not bad. It's a gritty little cyberpunk actioner with an interesting European cast that doesn't take itself too seriously. Indeed I would stand by the first half of the film, but man it goes down the drain by the end. This is why I'm interested to learn more about this supposed "unrated" version that'll appear on the DVD. Of course "unrated" hardly means "director's cut" or even "extended cut" but, with any luck, a longer version might just salvaged this dreary effort from the landfill. Full DVD specs after the break.

The players: Director: Mathieu Kassovitz, Writers: Eric Besnard, Mathieu Kassovitz, Cast: Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, Melanie Thierry, Lambert Wilson, Gerard Depardieu
Facts of interest: Based on the novel by Maurice G. Dantec.
The plot: A mercenary (Diesel) agrees to escort a young woman from Mongolia to New York.
Our quick thoughts: When a director trashes his own movie just a few days before its theatrical release, you known it can’t be good. Earlier this week, French helmer Mathieu Kassovitz said he’s quite unhappy with his latest action flick “Babylon A.D.,” citing strong studio interference as one example of a terrible experience on the set.
Angry about not being able to do with the scenes what he originally intended to, Kassovitz even called the movie violent and stupid. And who can blame him for telling the truth?...

Mathieu Kassovitz is not exactly a happy man right now. Talking to AMC, the French director said he's not at all happy with the production of his newest action flick "Babylon A.D.," which opens nationwide this Friday.
"I'm very unhappy with the film," he told AMC. "I never had a chance to do one scene the way it was written or the way I wanted it to be. The script wasn't respected. Bad producers, bad partners, it was a terrible experience."
Based on a novel by Maurice G. Dantec, the futuristic thriller stars Vin Diesel as a mercenary who agrees to escort a young woman from Russia to the United States.
Kassovitz said he always had a deep interest in the book because of its strong thematic. Unfortunately, not much of that made it into the big-screen adaptation. "It's pure violence and stupidity," he said.
Really? I completely understand that...

We have some great images in from the next film in the franchise from Universal Pictures. Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster and Laz Alonzo! This is the fourth film in the series, the last of which was "Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" which neither Walker nor Diesel starred in. The new film reunites the original stars and looks set to bring in some big box office numbers for Universal. Diesel makes his return soon with the Mathieu Kassovitz' directed "Babylon A.D." which sees theatres on August 29th. Based on the novel written by Maurice G. Dantec which Eric Besnard ("Ca$h") adapts. Walker's been quite this year with just a single project on offer in the upcoming "The Lazarus Project" helmed by John Glenn who also writes alongside Evan Astrowsky. He stars with Linda Cardellini in the drama thriller also called "The Heaven Project.
