Minka Kelly does not plan to reprise her role as Lyla Garrity in the upcoming Friday Night Lights reboot being developed by Peacock. While promoting her new Netflix series Ransom Canyon, the actor commented on the future of her character from the original football drama, suggesting her time in Dillon, Texas is finished.

“I think it’s always best leaving people — if even they do — wanting more,” Kelly told Deadline. “I think leaving that where it was is probably the right thing to do. Maybe too much sometimes is too much. I don’t know that they need more Lyla.”

Deadline first reported the streamer landing the reboot in December. In the original show, Kelly starred as Lyla Garrity, head cheerleader for the Panthers football team. While discussing her upcoming Netflix series Ransom Canyon, in which she stars alongside Josh Duhamel, Kelly seemed to indicate an unlikely return to Dillon, Texas, to reprise her role.

Updated, March 27, 2025: A new trailer, set to “Texas Sun” by Khruangbin and Leon Bridges, has arrived for Netflix’s latest Wester TV series Ransom Canyon, based on the book by Jodi Thomas.

“In Ransom Canyon,” Josh Duhamel’s voice says over shots of ranchers riding horses, the main thoroughfare of the small Texas town, high school football games and more. “Everyone’s running from something, or running to something.”

Duhamel stars as Staten Kirkland, one of the main ranchers in the titular town, who is part of a large ensemble of the new Netflix show, out April 17.

“What’s up with that guy anyway?” Jack Schumacher’s Yancy Grey, who can be seen later on in the trailer risking it all for a rodeo ride, asks Cap Fuller (James Brolin) about the stoic Staten.

“He lost everything,” Brolin replies over a montage of a car wreck and police sirens.

Move over Paramount, Netflix is coming for your audience of Western fans. The biggest streaming platform is trying to capture the spark that Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone, Landman, and other series have ignited by creating their own Western franchises. The year began with American Primeval, an epic Western thriller about the Utah Massacre, and while it wasn't critically acclaimed (though MovieWeb loved it), it was certainly popular. Now comes Ransom Canyon, which cynics may call a Yellowstone rip-off, but which seems poised to certainly attract a strong audience. The synopsis reads as follows:

Chapelwaite will not be returning for a second season. MGM+ (formerly Epix) has cancelled the horror drama after one season of 10 episodes.

Starring Adrien Brody, Emily Hampshire, Jennifer Ens, Sirena Gulamgaus, Ian Ho, and Eric Peterson, the series is based on Jerusalem’s Lot by Stephen King. The story follows a widower (Brody) as he raises his three daughters and moves the family to his ancestrial home in a small town in Maine.

The previously announced second season of MGM+’s horror series Chapelwaite is no longer moving forward despite the series’ renewal last year.

“I’m afraid Captain Boone’s story ends on that beach of weathered, Maine sand,” Co-creator and Executive Producer Jason Filardi posted on X (fka Twitter). “There will be no Season 2. Thank you to all the Chapelwaite fans!”

At one point, Saw VI director Kevin Greutert was on board to direct a slasher movie called All My Friends Are Dead… but then Greutert got busy working on the upcoming sequel Saw X and ended up handing the helm over to Marcus Dunstan – the director of The Collector and co-writer of Saw VI. All My Friends Are Dead is now filming in Vancouver with Dunstan at the helm, and the first image from the film has been unveiled. “All My Friends Are Dead follows a group of college friends as they head to the year’s biggest music festival. When they get a killer deal on an Airbnb, they waste little time celebrating their good fortune. Their weekend of partying quickly turns into a nightmare as members of the group are murdered one by one. When they realize that each of these horrific deaths corresponds to one of the seven sins, it’s only a matter of time before their number is up.”

The project from Cinedigm, Roundtable Entertainment and Clay Epstein’s Film Mode Entertainment is shooting in Vancouver, Canada, with an ensemble cast that includes Jennifer Ens, Ali Fumiko Whitney, Justin Derickson, Julian Haig, Cardi Wong, Jack Doupe-Smith and Michaella Russell.

With a screenplay by Josh Sims and Jessica Sarah Flaum, All My Friends Are Dead follows college friends at a big music festival where a weekend of partying quickly becomes a nightmare as the group is murdered one by one. When the friends realize each horrific death corresponds to one of the seven deadly sins, it’s only a matter of time before everyone’s number is up.

Cinedigm already picked up the North American rights to the film financed by Banc of California, Budding Equity and others.

2021 hasn’t exactly been the year of great Stephen King adaptations on the small screen. “Lisey’s Story” wasn’t the cerebral thriller it should have been. And the newest attempt at “The Stand” was a major dud almost from its onset. But, as they say, the third time’s a charm with “Chapelwaite,” a pitch-black horror set in 1850s Maine, where vampires rule the looming eternal night.

Like many great “Nosferatu”-lite narratives, “Chapelwaite,” based upon King’s “Jerusalem’s Lot,” isn’t merely fixated on the bloodthirsty undead stalking the innocent humans trembling in their candlelit homes; it explores our relationship with death, grief, family and what it means to have eternal life. It begins at Chapelwaite manor, where in 1817 a petrified young boy named Charles Boone unsuccessfully attempts to escape his rabid, shovel-wielding father (Sebastien Labelle), who’s dug a grave in his name right outside their home.

The titular Chapelwaite mansion does not exactly look like “Home, Sweet Home” in this exclusive sneak peek from Epix‘s adaptation of Stephen King’s 1978 short story “Jerusalem’s Lot.”
