- It was on Mike Douglas in 1974 that Totie met the band Kiss, who were making their first national TV appearance. Fields joked that it would be funny if bassist Gene Simmons, under the makeup, turned out to be "just a nice Jewish boy." Simmons (who is not only Jewish but was born in Israel) responded "You should only know", to which Fields said, "I do! You can't hide the hook!".
- Suffered two heart attacks while recovering from her leg amputation.
- Developed a blood clot in her left leg in April of 1976. Attempts to remove the clot failed and her left leg was amputated, above the knee.
- Her problems with blood clots led to her death on Aug. 2, 1978 from pulmonary embolism.
- Voted entertainer of the year and female comedy star of the year by the American Guild of Variety Artists.
- Was diagnosed with breast cancer the year after her amputation. She had a right mastectomy soon after.
- Totie's elder daughter, Jody Johnston was a director of the Rainbow Company, a Vegas-based troupe of child actors many of whom were handicapped,.
- Her cremated remains were temporarily interred in Las Vegas until the death of her husband in the 1990's; when both were interred together in Los Angeles.
- Totie and George had 2 daughters, Jody Fields Johnston born in 1952 and Debbie Fields born in 1955.
