Long before movies routinely created ‘worlds’ with their own twisted fantasy logic, only a few paranoid thrillers, usually odd genre items, tried out twisted stories of deceptive ‘hidden realities.’ Like an extended Twilight Zone entry, this lively James Garner war pic morphs into a bizarre conspiracy worthy of Philip K. Dick. If only it weren’t so “L-a-o” — Literal And Obvious.

Ranvir Shorey while being a celebrated actor has also had his fair share of reality television, his close proximity to the participants of reality television, apparently, compelled him to sign up for his latest film Blue Mountain.
“It is a rather myopic view if people think reality television is only what they see on the television. What we see is the journey of the winners, the journey of the kids who have done well and succeeded, but there are thousands of those who participate and don’t win. It is their crushed dreams that compelled me to sign Blue Mountain. A film about a journey of a small town boy into the world of reality television. It is not easy being those kids, and with the film I took that journey with them. It is this side of reality television that needs to be showcased. When I read the script,...

This Bollywood take on the 2011 boxing saga hits home occasionally but sacrifices drama for fight scenes stripped of emotional scar tissue
Bollywood has long eyed up Hollywood for inspiration: since the millennium, it’s remade everything from The Godfather (2008’s Sarkar Raj) tothe David Duchovny heart transplant saga Return to Me (2004’s Dil Ne Jise Apne Kahaa). Fox’s high-profile Brothers forms an interesting case study, reworking material that flopped the first time around: Gavin O’Connor’s Warrior, that 2011 mix of mythology and mixed martial arts that sought to provide rock ’em-sock ’em entertainment to crowds whose credit had been crunched. (Sadly, they couldn’t afford the ticket.) That film was very specifically tied to an America reeling from rounds of foreclosures and lay-offs; removed of that context, the story can’t pack the same punch.

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Just when you think you have seen it all, there comes a film that reminds you of how far the cinematic medium has come…And how far it can go in the right hands. And let’s face it. Bhansali is Bhansali. His visual imagery in all his earlier films from Khamoshi: The Musical to Guzaarish is comparable with the best art from any field of aesthetics.
You could say Bhansali’s cinema is the visual equivalent of Lata Mangeshkar’s singing. And you wouldn’t be wrong.
In terms of its free-flowing unmeasured operatic opulence Ram-Leela (with or without the censorial pre-fix) comes closest to the giddy high-pitched and yet miraculously controlled tempo and tenor of Bhansali’s Devdas. That too was a steeply sensuous cinematic adaptation from a literary source. Ram Leela goes to Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet...

And now he is gearing up for yet another grand release in the form of Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela.With the mammoth task of doing music for all the Slb films, Monty seems to have made a special bond with the perfectionist director. Expectations for a movie soundtrack don’t come as high as they come for Slb’s Ram-leela often. The fate of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film isn’t always pleasant but there’s no denying that the music of his films leave an impact. For Ram-leela he collaborates with Monty Sharma, of Saawariya fame. Slb established himself as a composer with Guzaarish and although the album didn’t acquire a chart buster status, it did introduce Bhansali in a new light. So does the collaboration of two houses of talent deliver a winning album? Read on to find out.
Indian Idol 5, 2nd place winner Bhoomi Trivedi opens the album with a track you’d least expect to be in this album. Ram Chahe Leela starts off as expected with a candid Gujrati conversation that gives the feel of a pre-gig chat. But then it all takes a surprising turn and...

Pop culture is a huge, ever-shifting entity that never really coheres into a singular identity. Something that’s a massive, runaway success in one moment is left forgotten and discarded in the next (hi, Heroes). Nothing exemplifies this better than TV, whose enormity and need for content is comparable to a vast desert wasteland filled with a billion of those gaping mouth/vagina things that Boba Fett fell into.
For every show that succeeds, there’s a couple hundred that vanish without a trace, and of that small fraction of shows that manage to achieve longevity, an even tinier percentage are able to transcend popular success and embed into the larger pop culture consciousness.
Legacies are a hard thing to judge, and almost impossible to predict. Look at Lost and The Sopranos, shows that dramatically altered the course of television, but which now exist almost entirely as endless arguments over...

Throughout the week, we'll be presenting the Heroes of the Year, our list of individuals who made a major impact on the comic book movie community in 2012.
Kicking things off is Tom Hiddleston, who starred as the mischievous villain Loki in "Marvel's The Avengers." Honoring the "hero" is guest blogger and Hiddleston fan Kate Miller, one of the masterminds behind Project Wendy.
It may seem counterintuitive to consider a villain in the context of "Heroes of the Year." Yet although "The Avengers" owes much of its success to Joss Whedon’s brilliant screenplay and deft directorial hand, not since Darth Vader in the original "Star Wars" series has there been as charismatic and compelling an antagonistic portrayal as Tom Hiddleston's Loki — and the resulting impact on both the film and the genre is significant.
We've always had a soft spot in our hearts for our Tricksters. Charming and vain,...

Thomas “Tommy Salami” Pluck hit the hardboiled fiction scene online like a Tasmanian Devil a couple of years back, taking a bite out of every venue in reach. I knew him best for his hysterical productivity and hail-fellow-well-met humor. Then Tommy got a cause – Protect, an organization dedicated to tougher laws on child abuse – and got serious.
Since then, Tom Pluck has been the galvanizing force behind two anthologies to benefit Protect, the Lost Children series, that brought together nearly 50 different authors. His social media has been a trumpet against bullying and abuse of all stripe. He’s a skilled hand at stirring up the online crime crowd.
Now we invite him down to the Complex to see what has Tom Pluck so riled up.
Q: You’ve mentioned the role that fury against injustice plays in inspiring your writing. When did you first resolve to become a writer, and what motivated it?...

Paradoxes abound in Battlefield Heroes, a South Korean film showing at the New York Asian Film Festival. Even the title itself, an English slap-on as American audiences would never understand what its literal translation, Pyongyang Castle, refers to, belies what the story is about. For, at its center, the best heroes are no where near a battlefield.
Silla, an upstart power in Korea, has decided to attack the kingdom of Goguryeo, one that has withstood many assaults during its 700 year reign in the region. This attack comes with the backing of the Chinese Tang dynasty who will play the two regional powers against each other only to swoop in later and pick up the pieces. In between this large battle there are a good number that occur on the ground and in leadership.

Saawariya’s award-winning music composer Monty Sharma has graduated to film production with Cocaine to ensure that the film’s music gets as much prominence as the film itself. “Lately, I’ve noticed that a lot of good compositions go unnoticed, either because the film flops miserably, and is off theatres before the score picks up or the music is not publicised and released,” says Monty. “So I’ve decided that I will compose for my own productions, and ensure that the songs reach out to the public,” reasons Monty, whose brother Guru will direct the film. Pahrump - Call it Hof Vegas. Dennis Hof of HBO’s Cathouse no longer wants me to warn readers that his Bunny Ranch empire is in only Reno and not Las Vegas. He’s bringing his style of adult fun to the outskirts of Sin City. He called up the hotline from the middle of Crystal, Nevada to spread the news. The sounds of hammering and drills came from his end of the phone.
“We’re moving around here and getting some things done,” Dennis Hof said. “I bought two 35 year old rundown, rat trap brothels. What you’re buying is the licenses.”
The two old names were Cherry Patch Ranch and Mabel’s Whore House. The new places are Love Ranch and Dennis Hof’s Cathouse. “Those are name that are synonymous with good times.”
There are no good times for the former owner. He got arrested for bribing a county official.

Being Human is a British import show that has not yet received the American fan following of Doctor Who, Are You Being Served?, or Monty Python’s Flying Circus, but this show certainly deserves it. The premise of a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost living together could very easily become melodramatic like Twilight or travel down the blood-is-sexy road recently traveled by True Blood. Instead, Being Human takes a gimmicky premise and uses the supernatural elements to explore real issues like addiction, grief, belief vs. delusion, and what it means to be human.
Being Human follows a vampire named Mitchell (Aidan Turner), a werewolf named George (Russell Tovey), and a ghost named Annie (Lenora Crichlow) who all want the same thing: to live a normal life. At the beginning of the second season, the vampire leader Herrick is dead. George accidentally scratched his girlfriend Nina (Sinead Keenan), and she...

"In polite social encounters, learn to probe. Ask indirect questions to get people to reveal their weaknesses and intentions." --Law 14: Pose as a Friend, Work as a Spy, The 48 Laws of Power Some Survivor contestants are physical powerhouses. Some are brilliant gamers. Some flirt their way to victory. But last night, Wendy Jo unveiled a never before seen Survivor strategy. “I don’t have any blisters on my feet,” she bragged to her tribe. Unfortunately, even that superpower wasn’t enough. The kooky goat farmer fulfilled her husband’s predictions and became the first contestant eliminated from Survivor: Nicaragua.

Chicago – With the release of “The American,” it’s time to rally ‘round the flagpole and see if it waves. And that mix of metaphors conjures the great American film, the movies with American or America in their titles that have flown like an eagle soaring through red, white and blue skies on a starry night, punctuated by fireworks on the 4th of July.
American Beauty (1999)

As unblinking and truthful story about the American Dream as any pre-9/11 film, Ab rides on the performance of Kevin Spacey as a burnt-out corporate nebbish named Lester who is unloved by his ambitious real estate agent wife (Annette Bening) and is quietly desperate about the life that has passed him by.
When Lester is unexpectedly freed from his 9 to 5 hell, he embarks on a journey which includes workouts, weed and lust – for an unattainable teenage friend of his daughter.
