London, June 5 (Ians) Former England captain Michael Atherton feels left-arm spin all-rounder Liam Dawson can be a like-for-like replacement for injured Jack Leach, after he suffered a lower-back stress fracture, thus ruling him out of the upcoming Ashes series against Australia.
Leach developed lower-back stress fracture symptoms during England’s ten-wicket victory over Ireland in their one-off Test at the Lord’s last week, where the left-arm spinner took four wickets and scans on Sunday revealed the fracture, which will keep him out of five-match Ashes series starting from June 16 at Edgbaston.
Leach had established himself as England’s main spinner under Ben Stokes’ captaincy and was the only specialist spinner named in the 16-man squad for the first two Tests. His absence is a huge blow to England, who now have only 11 days in hand to decide on his replacement for the Ashes.

London, June 1 (Ians) Former captain Michael Atherton said it would be a big blow for England if skipper Ben Stokes’ knee problem limits his ability to bowl during the upcoming Ashes, saying the allrounder’s role he fulfils in the side is absolutely critical.
Stokes suffered a flare-up of a left knee injury during the drawn Test series in New Zealand in February. Since then, he has only bowled just one over in one of his two matches for Chennai Super Kings (Csk), in Ipl 2023, where his appearances were limited due to various niggles.
Ahead of the one-off Test against Ireland at ‘ord’s, Stokes had said the left knee was in a much better position than it was in New Zealand and has given himself the best opportunity to play a role with the ball in Eng’and’s home summer.
“Stokes’ knee is a concern because of the balance of the side.

New Delhi, May 17 (Ians) Former England captain Michael Atherton believes picking Jonny Bairstow over Ben Foakes is the right call taken by the Test team think-tank for the one-off Test against Ireland and possibly, for the highly-anticipated Ashes.
Bairstow has been out of cricketing action for England since September last year after breaking his leg and dislocating his ankle in a freak incident at a golf course. In his absence, Foakes impressed as a wicketkeeper-batter in England’s away Test series in Pakistan and New Zealand.
With young batter Harry Brook scoring 809 runs in 10 Test innings, including four centuries at an average of 80.9 and making himself undroppable, England’s selectors chose Bairstow, who scored four centuries in five Test innings last year against New Zealand and India, over Foakes.
“I think it is the right call and I think that is the minority view from testing the water on social media.

New Delhi, Feb 2 (Ians) Former England captain Michael Atherton was impressed with the immediate impact made by Jofra Archer in his early days of coming back to the international cricket arena during the side’s 59-run win over South Africa in the third Odi at Kimberley.
After captain Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan hit centuries in the match against the Proteas, Archer, playing just his second international match after being on the sidelines due to back and elbow injuries, ran through South Africa’s top and middle order to pick career-best figures of 6-40 in his 9.1 overs and carry England to victory.
“You have the context of him missing the best part of two years with very bad injuries. Elbow and back injuries are very serious for a fast bowler so there must have been some doubt for him over whether he would get back to full pace and full fitness.

Adelaide, Nov 10 (Ians) Former England skipper Nasser Hussain slammed India for playing old-fashioned power-play cricket in their deflating ten-wicket loss to the Jos Buttler-led side in the second semi-final of Men’s T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval.
Despite possessing of a formidable batting line-up, India’s constant problem of not getting a flying start in the tournament came back to bite them again when they made just 38/1 in the powerplay, which paled very badly in comparison to 63/0 when Buttler (80 not out) and Alex Hales (86 not out) were at the crease to chase down 168/6 with four overs to spare.
“When you see England in the first six overs there is a glaring error (from India). Hales and Buttler are playing the way they are and India are still playing old-fashioned powerplay cricket,” said Hussain on Sky Sports after the match ended.

In bizarre incident, Kent fielder uses keeper's glove in One-Day Cup final, team penalised five runs
London, Sep 18 (Ians) A bizarre incident took place in the One-Day Cup final at Trent Bridge, where Kent fielder Harry Finch picked up wicket-keeper Ollie Robinson’s glove and used it to field the ball, leading to Lancashire being awarded five penalty runs.
Kent won the match by 21 runs, after scoring 306/6 in their allotted 50 overs and then bundled out the opponents for 285 in 48.4 overs.
Kent fielder Harry Finch violated Law 28 of the McC’s Laws of Cricket against Lancashire at Trent Bridge, said a report in mirror.co.uk on Saturday.
In the 21st over of Lancashire’s innings, Steven Croft and Keaton Jennings went for a quick single, with Robinson flicking off his glove to chase the ball. As the wicket-keeper threw the ball in the direction of the stumps, the 27-year-old Finch curiously put on Robinson’s discarded glove to gather the ball, thus violating Law 28 of the McC’s Laws of Cricket.
