Amazon's big video push seems to be paying dividends. According to Qwilt, a site that tracks online video traffic, Amazon now claims more traffic than Hulu and Apple. Amazon's online video traffic is still far behind major bandwidth users Netflix and YouTube, but stream volume on Amazon Instant Video has increased threefold over in the past year. The company's execs believe an ever-growing library is responsible for the jump. "We've invested hundreds of millions of dollars in great TV shows and movies for Prime members and it's working," said Bill Carr, Amazon's VP of Digital Video and Music. Included in Amazon's library are a growing number of originals, with the company recently picking up four new comedies and dramas to join existing series Alpha House and Betas. Amazon has also invested in children's programming, and it greenlit two new kids' shows--Gortimer Gibbon's Life of Normal Street and Wishenpoof!--alongside its...

The arrangement more than doubles Amazon Prime Instant Video’s offerings, and knocks some of the wind out of its chief competitor: Netflix. The streaming video company’s shares were down about 10% shortly after the market opened this morning. Epix’ new agreement with Amazon comes just days after the premium movie service’s exclusivity arrangement with Netflix expired. Films from Epix — backed by Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate — will now appear on Amazon and Netflix about 90 days after they run on traditional pay TV. Epix’ announcement also comes just before Amazon’s press conference on Thursday where it’s expected to unveil a new line of Kindle Fire tablets — possibly including a model with an 8.9-inch screen that could compete more directly with Apple’s iPad. “We think customers will really enjoy watching new titles like The Avengers, Iron Man 2 and The Hunger Games on their Kindle Fire, PlayStation 3, Xbox,...

Once upon a time, all a television needed to do to be impressive was to look sharp and work properly. Today’s technology innovations have raised the bar, thanks to advances in screen technology and the flood of people with business degrees who believe that the customer’s experience should be enhanced. Televisions on the market now can connect to the Internet, hold and store apps, and sync with gaming consoles. Emerging models will work with the wave of a hand or voice commands. George Lucas may never finish tinkering with his Star Wars series. At the Consumer Electronics Show today, the anticipated announcement was officially made that the six movies will be collected in a nine-disc box set. The original trilogy will be making their Blu-ray debut -- but these are the special editions. Apparently, the original elements from the first releases are fragile and need to be recreated or cleaned to properly reproduce in high definition (yes, meaning another opportunity to sell us product).
All the usual websites are now taking pre-orders but the disc won't be out for months. Here's the formal release:

It's official. The Force is going to be unleashed onto Blu-ray in September when Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment releases all six Star Wars films in Hi-Def.
It is expected that the films in the original trilogy (you know, the good ones) will be the editions with updated special effects and a redeemed Han Solo rather than original theatrical versions. Nonetheless, seeing these sci-fi classics (yes, I'm still talking about the originals) in hi-def should be a treat to behold if Fox's recent release of the Alien films was anything to go by (hmm, I wonder if the special features will be accessible using I-am-your-fa-th-er mode).
We'd got no official word on extras at press time but they must be impressive because the box set of the entire saga includes nine (that's Nine) discs. What we do know for sure is what's in the official statement announcing the Blu-ray release.

The Star Wars series of movies -- both trilogies -- are finally coming to Blu-ray. Star Wars: The Complete Saga will be on sale later this year, sometime in September 2011.
Lucasfilm is releasing the remastered movies through its business relationship with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. The announcement was made today at the Consumer Electronics Show where Tcfhe president Mike Dunn addressed the assembled crowd, flanked by Imperial Stormtroopers and the Dark Lord of the Sith himself, Darth Vader.
"The Star Wars Saga is the most anticipated Blu-ray collection since the launch of the high-def format," Dunn said. "The epic franchise pioneered sound and visual presentation in theaters and is perfectly suited to do it again in the home, with a viewing experience only possible with Blu-ray."
"The Star Wars franchise has been one of the most anticipated Blu-ray releases by Amazon's customers," said Bill Carr, vice president of music and video at Amazon.
