This April 19 marks the 30th anniversary of the violent end of the siege of the religious sect, the Branch Davidians lead by David Koresh. Eighty people died in the fire set in their compound outside of Waco by members of the cult after law enforcement had attempted to flush them out by introducing tear gas. The standoff had begun 51 days earlier when Koresh and members of this sect ambushed Atf agents who had arrived at the complex to executed federal warrants on charges of illegal manufacture and possession of machine guns and destructive devices. Four Atf agents were killed along with six members of the sect.

Before Michael Shannon returns as villain, General Zod, in The Flash, he makes a return to deal with the embolden domestic terrorists in the follow-up show to Showtime’s six-part mini-series, Waco. The new chapters in the story follow the events in the wake of the siege at Mount Carmel. The focus centers around the trials of the surviving members of the Branch Davidians and anger from the public who felt the feds had gone a little too far. Collider has the report on the new trailer that’s been released days after the teaser on the new series.
Set to a cover of “Losing My Religion,” the footage kicks off with Noesner explaining how Waco has only united civil war-minded domestic terrorists and other individuals who lack faith in the American government and justice system. The result is a rise in further incidents and more animosity toward the FBI in particular.

"I wanna be still, the way I want to get still." 1091 Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie, very dark comedy titled Killing Eleanor, which premiered at the Scad Savannah Film Festival and St. Louis Film Festival last year. A new film from director Rich Newey, this off-beat dramedy involves two women who strike up a friendship and a deal to help each other get through, or get out of, life. A terminally-ill old lady convinces a self-destructive pain killer addict to help kill her, in exchange for clean urine. Their right to die odyssey is filled with complications as Eleanor's past and Natalie's lies catch up with them. Uultimately, helping Eleanor die with dignity might just teach Natalie to live with dignity. Annika Marks co-stars with Jenny O'Hara, and with a cast including Jane Kaczmarek, Betsy Brandt, Thomas Sadoski, Camryn Manheim, and Chris Mulkey. Seems like...

I first became aware of director Rich Newey’s work a few years ago when I caught his “Dreamland” episode of the sci-fi series Stitchers; working from an audacious script by Lynne E. Litt, Newey deftly juggled styles and tones with an inventiveness and confidence that led me to seek out his other episodic work on shows like Blindspot and The Fosters. I was consistently impressed by both his precise, expressive visual style and his sensitivity to dialogue and performance, skills on prominent display in his terrific new feature Killing Eleanor. Sonny Mallhi’s non-scary thriller offers neither supernatural chills nor real-world psychological insights
A puzzle, a frustration and a disappointment … Sonny Mallhi’s non-scary movie Anguish is all this, and not much more. (No relation to Bigas Luna’s 1987 cult classic Anguish, incidentally.) Yet in technical terms it is not badly made by any stretch. It’s just that there is a fatal generic uncertainty about what the film is trying to do. It offers neither honest supernatural chills nor real-world psychological insights: just a muddle.
The film begins with that traditionally dodgy claim of being inspired by true events, which should really be tested by a documentary. Ryan Simpkins plays Tess, a moody teenager living with Jessica (Annika Marks), who is effectively a single mom, as her partner, Tess’s dad, is away in the army, so they communicate via Skype. Tess is on medication for depression, a condition...

Sonny Mallhi is probably not a name on anyones horror radar, however Mallhi was the producer on films like The Strangers, House at the End of the Street and the fantastic 2014 Fightfest flick At the Devils Door (aka Home). Now I mention all those other films because Mallhi’s work has been met with various degrees of success, both commercially and critically – so going into Anguish I had no idea what to expect. I did hope for something as stunningly scary as At the Devils Door, what we got is something akin more to The Roommate…

Within a matter of hours, Anguish went from an ambiguous horror title to one of my top horror films of the year. I do my best for you people, but with twenty-something movies releasing per week, a few are destined to fall through the cracks. Lucky for me, “Horror Film Twitter” made sure this heartfelt possession thriller didn’t get buried under J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars hoopla – and with proper reasoning. Rookie director Sonny Mallhi makes a statement with this tightly restrained, yet effectively creepy flick by focusing more on emotion than cheap, unnecessary scares. A good genre movie makes you feel something more than physical chills, and Anguish has that wonderfully uncomfortable feeling about it in the best of ways.

Chicago – It’s a shame how box office numbers play such a large factor in Oscar votes. Just imagine if “The Blind Side” was a flop. Sandra Bullock wouldn’t have been allowed within a billion miles of the Oscar podium. If Ben Lewin’s “The Sessions” was given a fair shot with audiences, it would’ve easily brought its star, John Hawkes, an Oscar nomination.
As Mark O’Brien, a Polio-stricken writer confined to an iron lung, Hawkes delivers the sort of transcendently brilliant work that ranks right alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s phenomenal intensity in “The Master” and Daniel Day-Lewis’s astonishing transformation in “Lincoln.” The painstaking research he conducted, including several viewings of Jessica Yu’s Oscar-winning 1996 documentary short, “Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O’Brien,” is apparent in every frame of Hawkes’s sublime portrayal. He resists sentiment even when Lewin’s script succumbs to it.

Annika Marks went to Sundance for the first time as a cast member of “The Sessions” last year, making plenty of rookie mistakes that she doesn’t want to see anyone else repeat. Here is her advice for festival newbies. Drive The drive from Los Angeles to Park City is not only beautiful; it’s also practical. Having a car at Sundance gives you the flexibility to stay off-site (a good money saver as long as someone is staying sober enough to drive), the chance to avoid the shuttle (though the shuttle is free and easy to use), and a place to store your swag during the day. Note: The last place you want to figure out how to outfit your car with snow chains is in the middle of a blizzard in a McDonald’s parking lot at 3 a.m., so learn from my mistake and get chains in L.

Chicago – Sometimes an actor can deliver on so many levels at once that it makes flaws of a film easier to overlook. I’ll admit that while watching “The Sessions,” I was so caught up in the honest, true performance from the great John Hawkes that I didn’t consider many of the film’s dramatic failings until I began to consider my review. Hawkes’ work here is that good that it carries one away on a wave of emotion that dismisses critical thought. The film around him could have been better but you’re unlikely to realize that while you’re watching it.

Based on the autobiographical writings of its subject, Mark O’Brien, The Sessions is a crowd-pleasing drama about a man struggling to fulfil the most basic of sensations we take for granted – our capacity for sexual gratification.
O’Brien (John Hawkes), a 38-year-old man, is confined to an iron long for the majority of his waking life, paralysed after a debilitating bout of childhood polio. Still, he hasn’t let it hold him back; he’s an accomplished poet, and that prose adapted here – which could in the wrong hands have seemed overly precious and syrupy – is kept affectingly down-to-Earth by way of Hawkes’ sensitive portrayal and Ben Lewin’s simple but effective treatment
It is Mark’s gorgeous carer Amanda (Annika Marks) who initially awakens his lust, while he confides these urges in pragmatic priest, Father Brendan (William H. Macy). With his blessing, Mark proceeds...
