Over 50 years of British sci-fi television, the genre went from one golden age to another. The 1970s gave us bleakly devastating visions of the future, the 1980s gave us space invasions and comedy, the 1990s blended crime drama with sci-fi, and the 2000s remade shows from the 1970s and gave us Christopher Eccleston as two kinds of god.
Then came the 2010s, the birth of transatlantic co-productions and streaming. British sci-fi television was no longer the cheaper, shoddier counterpart to its US equivalent. The production values were glossy, the cast reached A-list heights, and the writing was what you’d expect from the most recent golden age of television. The age of cheap and cheerful sitcom-adjacent British science fiction was over… almost.

If there were an award for the most cinematic cigarette-sucking on film, “Lee” would be a shoo-in. Over the course of the nearly two-hour biopic, Kate Winslet, who stars as the war photographer Lee Miller, is consistently depicted amid a cloud of smoke, satisfying her oral fixation. Sometimes she puffs urgently, seeking to ease her jittery anxiety. In other scenes, she takes her time, her dramatic drags and pregnant pauses signaling that this lady has seen some things, kept some secrets, and survived it all.
Directed by the legendary cinematographer Ellen Kuras, “Lee” is one of the most conventional biopic exercises this year. The film is framed by a long conversation in 1977 between an elderly Lee (Winslet in makeup) and a young journalist, Antony (Josh O’Connor), seeking to chronicle Lee’s life. The pair chat in a moodily lit living room, Antony hunched over piles of Lee’s old photographs as the photographer,...

It’s raining the Bard.
In the wake of “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight and “Happy Valley” star Sarah Lancashire’s recently announced series on William Shakespeare, another production with the Bard as topic has revealed some of its cast.

The cast includes Stephen Campbell Moore, Romario Simpson (“Granite Harbour”), Samuel Barnett (“The History Boys”), co-producer Ed Hughes and Jonny Weldon (“House of the Dragon”).

Exclusive: Here’s the striking first official image of Kate Winslet as Lee Miller in feature Lee.
The image, shot during filming on location in Croatia, shows Oscar winner Winslet as the pioneering American photographer who covered WWII in Europe for British Vogue.
Filming is ongoing on the directorial debut of respected cinematographer Ellen Kuras (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind).
The film is not being called a biopic by Winslet and the producers, but it does explore the most significant decade of Lee Miller’s life. As a middle-aged woman, she refused to be remembered as a model and male artists’ muse and defied expectations by travelling to Europe to report from the frontline. There, in part as a reaction to her own well-hidden trauma, she used her Rolleiflex camera to give a voice to the voiceless. What Lee captured on film in Dachau and throughout Europe was shocking and horrific.

The life of England’s Prince George is being parodied in HBO Max’s The Prince, the 12-episode series premiering in one full batch at midnight Thursday. The project was originally delayed in May after the death of Prince Phillip.
The Prince is a biting, satirical look at the life of Prince George of Cambridge as he navigates the trials and tribulations of being a royal child. The youngest heir to the British throne will be voiced by creator Gary Janetti, who popularized the character and his royal adventures via his Instagram page.
By the looks of the new trailer, neither Prince Harry (Orlando Bloom), his wife Duchess Megan Markle (Condola Rashad) nor the rest of the family will be spared in the name of comedy—not even Queen Elizabeth (Frances de la Tour).

Fifty years after his play “Forty Years On,” Alan Bennett is still pining for the England of old. Just as his first play lamented the slipping standards of an old public school and, by extension, the nation at large, so “Allelujah!” sees an ailing National Health Service hospital as symptomatic of a wider national malaise. The show, now playing at Nicholas Hytner’s Bridge Theatre, is full of all the playwright’s signature elements — warmth, wry humor, faith in humankind — but at some point, you have to ask whether his idyllic, old England ever really existed. His nostalgia’s seductive, but mighty sentimental — and maybe, in this misty-eyed political climate, dangerous too.
Set in the geriatric wing of a Yorkshire hospital at full stretch, its future hanging in the balance, “Allelujah!” throws up a collage of characters and a criss-cross of subplots. Among the patients, singing in the hospital’s in-house Oap choir,...

“Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” enters its second season on BBC America on Saturday, but that doesn’t make the sci-fi/mystery/comedy/adventure series is any easier to summarize — even with a year under its belt. A new season doesn’t bring clarity, rather even more chaos and lunacy. Perhaps this is because it’s wholly the creation of Max Landis, who only kept the hero and the absurdist tone from Douglas Adams’ novels on which the series is based.
In its first season, the technicolor-clad Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett) adopted has-been musician Todd Brotzman (Elijah Wood) as his assistant to help solve a murder using “holistic” methods in which the universe randomly provides him with the answers he needs. In short, there is no coincidence where Dirk is concerned. Along the way, the two encounter a time machine, a corgi, a holistic assassin, a kitten, four psychic...

The Season 2 trailer, which BBC America released on Wednesday, reveals that Dirk (Samuel Barnett) and his pal Todd (Elijah Wood) will be reunited by the law. Meanwhile, Todd’s sister Amanda (Hannah Marks) appears to have figured out how things are connecting also. And it’s very quick, but we’re happy to see the corgi has returned as well as Bart (Fiona Dourif) looking a little bit sooty and the newly bearded Ken (Mpho Koaho). There’s also a prince with pink hair.

What can we expect from season 2, especially your relationship with each other? Can we expect you to work better together or will we still get head-butting moments?
Elijah Wood: Yeah, there's actually been kind of a shift in regards to our relationship. In the first season, Todd is super reluctant to do anything that Dirk wants him to do, or to...

Forget that it's an adaptation and this new, overstuffed Dirk Gently series is actually an agreeably daft watch...
Despite the perpetually stuck sofas and the alien ghosts and time travelling, Douglas Adams’ delightfully nutty book Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency somehow completely hangs together. For all its weird digressions and laundry list of characters it was clear there was a method to the madness, and with Adams we were always in safe hands. There was never the sense that either Dirk Gently or the follow-up, The Long Dark Tea-Time Of The Soul was too scattershot and ultimately, Adams more or less pulled his various narrative strands together. Could the latest attempt to adapt the story for TV pull off the same thing?

In this Indiewire exclusive clip from the upcoming episode of BBC America’s “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” we find Todd (Elijah Wood) getting the bad cop/bad cop shakedown from detectives Estevez (Neil Brown Jr.) and Zimmerfield (Richard Schiff).
The detective duo seems to know all there is to know about his sister’s illness, the fallout with his band, and his suspicious presence at not one but three active crime scenes. And Todd just digs himself in deeper when he tries to come to his own defense. The clip ends with him sitting speechless, getting hard looks from the inquisitive detectives, and smack in the middle of maybe more trouble than he can manage.

Douglas Adams has proven to be a notoriously difficult author to adapt to any form of video, but Dirk Gently has somehow managed to lend itself well to service as inspiration, if not actually adaptation.
Dirk Gently was already a show starring Stephen Mangan, and it was brilliant, and now BBC America brings you Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Both shows can only legitimately claim to be “inspired by” by the Douglas Adams work, and that’s probably the only way to get something that works. Adams’ writing is too specific to the medium, and largely far too “internal” to adapt in a direct way.
In the latest show, that means that there is actually little in common with the book series in terms of the actual plot, though there is still a Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett – Penny Dreadful), who is still a “holistic” detective, and there is still...

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency premieres tonight on BBC America and follows the exploits of the very eccentric and unusually gifted detective Dirk Gently. Based on Douglas Adams’ novels, the story involves time travel, assassins, kittens and just about everything else…the key being it is all connected. The books have been adapted by Max Landis and is a co-production between BBC America and Netflix. Landis says he has stuck to the spirit of the character but the books are not being slavishly followed. The series stars Samuel Barnett as the self-styled holistic detective and Elijah Wood plays his unintended sidekick Todd. The cast also features Hannah...read more...

To adapt any Douglas Adams property, one must be confident, ambitious, foolhardy and willing to fail big time. Creator Max Landis is all of those things, and for all of its faults, at least his take on “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” is wholly its own spastic, frantic and technicolor beast.
Adams’ books are not necessarily sacred texts (some may disagree), but his absolute mastery of the absurd balanced with his satirical take on human nature and an overarching cosmic view is difficult to approximate, much less imitate. Even his most adapted series “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” has had its share of tepid if not cringe-worthy transitions to the screen.

With the lesser known “Dirk Gently,” more license is given because its story and the author’s observational tone are less accessible.

BBC America already has one wacky British time traveler on its schedule, but with all of time and space at your disposal, there’s surely room for one more. Enter “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” a completely bonkers series based on the novels by Douglas Adams.
Created by Max Landis, the series is a sci-fi mystery with comedic sensibility and a helluva lot of storylines. Like the 2012 TV adaptation before it, “Dirk Gently” dispenses with the book’s plot — which some have proclaimed unfilmable — in favor of an original mystery. Landis’ version also dispenses with all of the book’s characters save for the titular detective himself.

Talk about a first impression: The relationship between the two main characters in BBC America's newest original series, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, gets off to an extremely fast-paced start. Literally. E! News has an exclusive sneak peek at the show's premiere episode—and the moment that Elijah Wood's Todd and Samuel Barnett's Dirk Gently meet: mid-car chase.
