"Perhaps you're not searching for something… Perhaps you're running away from something…" Ohh sh*t this rules!! Another must watch short film to enjoy, highly recommend watching this. The Rock of Ages is made by Australian filmmaker Eron Sheean, though it's really an Icelandic production. The distant past. A soldier of uncertain provenance (of which army? which era?) stumbles through a vast, desolate landscape, attempting to outrun the evil he's done. While fleeing his enemies, he encounters an odd talking rock which promises to grant his deepest desire. Starring Tómas Lemarquis as the soldier, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as the rock. The talking rock is an actual practical set piece, animated by a puppeteer - Izabela Claudia Mos. It was shot on Iceland, hence why it all looks so gorgeous. I just love how visceral and authentic this looks, and the rock reminds me of classic 80s movies like The NeverEnding Story & Labyrinth.

UK-based Australian filmmaker Eron Sheean turned a lot of heads a few years ago with his science fiction drama Errors of the Human Body (read Mack's review here), and his current project looks very promising as well. Shooting has commenced on The Rock of Ages, a fantasy short written and directed by Eron, and he calls it a surreal black comedy, heavily influenced by the works of Jim Henson, Terry Gilliam, and Ingmar Bergman. Wowzers! As taken from the Indiegogo website: The story is about a violent soldier who does terrible things, in some misguided belief it will make him immortal and all-powerful. His final confrontation comes on the side...

The year is 1914, the planet is about to crack open under the bloody strain of World War I, and a nameless man played by British actor David Oakes is sailing towards the ends of the earth in order to get away from it all. Xavier Gens’ “Cold Skin” never tells us much about who he was, or what inspired him to run from it — the film eschews even the hazy background information that Albert Sánchez Piñol provided in his 2002 novel of the same name — but it’s clear that this sturdy, unremarkable bloke has no further interest in violence.

Samuel Goldwyn Films is set to release Xavier Gens' Cold Skin this September. This film, which was influenced by H.P. Lovecraft's work on The Shadow Over Innsmouth, involves a remote lighthouse and the two men who work there. Every night, something attacks from the nearby shoreline. Also, this film was produced from Sánchez Piñol’s 2007 novel, with the screenplay written by Jesus Como (28 Weeks Later) and Eron Sheean. The film stars: Ray Stevenson, David Oakes ("The Living and the Dead") and Aura Garrido. Samuel Goldwyn Films has just released the film's official trailer and poster. Both items can be found here. The trailer shows many of the creatures from the film. Looking like some sort of mermen, these creatures have blue skin and appear hairless. The two men, living on the island, approach the creatures in two different ways. This leads to more conflict as these monsters gather outside of the lighthouse.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the marketing dept. of Samuel Goldwyn. Director: Xavier Gens. Writers: Jesús Olmo, Eron Sheean and Albert Sánchez Piñol. Cast: Ray Stevenson, David Oakes and Aura Garrido. French filmmaker Xavier Gens must have played the mobile game Shoggoth Rising when he was conceiving Cold Skin. There are moments in his cinematic treatment which looks all too familiar. While the story is different, the fact both owe a huge debt to H.P. Lovecraft says it all. When both take place at a lonely isolated lighthouse and the conflict lies between Man vs. Nature, just who will first succumb to the fury (madness) is easily evident. The cinematography by Daniel Aranyó is gorgeous to behold. The intro feels like it's straight out of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein novel. However, instead of finding two people at odds with each other, they are ferrying...

After movies like V/H/S and The ABCs of Death, I’m all for horror anthologies abiding by a particular theme. There’s something inherently fun about such a cornucopia of treats, as different directors populate one single film with so many distinctive styles and traits – as long as the segments set the stage for such fun. I’ll always give a horror anthology a try, from Chillerama to The Theatre Bizarre, which is why I’m happy to say we’ve got an exciting anthology coming our way with Fear Paris.
Newly announced, Fear Paris will join the likes of Joe Dante (Gremlins), Xavier Gens (Hitman/Frontier(s)), and Timo Vuorensola (Iron Sky), as they explore the horrific underworld of France’s iconic capital city. Here’s the full press release, accompanied by a tonal teaser below:

Errors Of The Human Body may only be considered a suspenseful thriller, but to me it’s straight horror. Why? I’ll be completely honest with you all – science terrifies me. I understand the need to always keep learning and create even greater understandings about this big, glorious universe we all live on, but at what cost? Do we really need to be creating super hadron colliders which can smash particles at the risk of creating a black hole which could potentially consume our planet? Think about it, if one measly scientist were to calculate a number wrong to the decimal point – boom, goodbye humanity. “Well the good news is, we discovered a new element. The bad news is, we’re all going to die – In The Name Of Science!”

Body Talk: Sheean’s Debut Forgoes Thrills for Moody Drama
Eron Sheean, best known for writing the 2011 Xavier Gens film, The Divide, arrives with his curiously titled Errors of the Human Body, a sort of medical drama thriller that sounds instead like a documentary series on the Discovery channel. At first playing like a treatment by Robin Cook with a mad scientist angle, the film eventually reveals that it has no interest in delivering the thrills or chills that its foreboding first half painstakingly constructs, instead settling for mediocre melodrama.
Geoffrey Burton (Michael Eklund) is a medical researcher that has dedicated his life to finding a cure for Burton’s syndrome, a deadly genetic disease caused by a mutation that claimed the life of his infant son and ruined his idyllic marriage. Taking a job in Dresden, he spends his time developing pre-natal tests and living out an angsty existence...

What if you could unlock the key to solving human illness and frailty forever? That's something of a holy grain for scientists and doctors and it serves as the driving force behind the dramatic chiller "Errors Of The Human Body." Eron Sheean makes his directorial debut with the film, which stars Michael Eklund ("The Call," "The Divide") and Karoline Herfuth ("The Reader," "Passion"), and tells the story of a recently divorced Canadian geneticist who decamps to Germany to work with with his former intern and colleague Rebekka on a human regenerative gene. Maddeningly close to a medical breakthrough, the geneticist quickly finds himself on a dangerous downward spiral. This exclusive clip nicely sets up the relationships and themes that carry through the rest of the film. “Following divorce from his wife and the loss of his son to a rare genetic mutation, Canadian geneticist Geoff Burton relocates to the harsh, wintry scenery of Dresden, Germany to work on groundbreaking new project that might just be his key to redemption. When teamed up with his former intern and colleague Rebekka, he starts working on a human regenerative gene with direct ties to his personal tragedy, yet matters prove increasingly difficult: jealous co-‐workers’ feelings are ruffled, old flames are rekindled and personal demons become consistently harder to suppress in this new and oppressive work environment. Still haunted by the memory of his wife and his failures to have saved his deceased son, Burton...

I'm absolutely loving the poster campaign for German-Australian sci-fi thriller Errors of the Human Body. The North American and Australian key art so far has been stylish, classy, minimalistic but always evocative and haunting. This latest poster continues the classy, haunting approach. Directed by Eron Sheean, Errors of the Human Body opens in the Us through IFC Midnight in limited theatrical release and VOD on April 19.As always, go to the gallery below for a bigger massive version of the poster.Full disclosure: I work as a consultant for Xyz Films, which executive produced Errors. I have no direct relation to the film; I'm just genuinely excited....

If the new poster for Eron Sheean’s Errors of the Human Body tells us anything, it's that something isn’t right in the laboratory.
A scientist who has lost everything moves to Dresden, Germany to work on a new project which may hold answers to genetic questions that have alluded him and could have saved his son’s life. Sounds like a recipe for body horror.
Here’s the synopsis straight from the source:

Sunday night was a night for sci-fi drama at the O Cinema in the Wynwood area of downtown Miami. Showing at the art-house theater was “Errors of the Human Body,” a dark science-fiction film by Eron Sheean. The film, starring Michael Eklund (“Alcatraz,” “The Call”), Karoline Herfurth, Tómas Lemarquis and Rik Mayall, left a lot of sitting in the theater for a couple of minutes after the film ended. There was a lot to take in. Warning, this review might not come to a great conclusion. The story follows a genetic scientist named Geoff (Eklund), who has traveled to Europe to take part in a new research project spearheaded by [ Read More ]

Errors Of The Human Body
Stars: Michael Eklund, Karoline Herfurth, Tomas Lemarquis, Rik Mayall, Caroline Gerdolle | Written by Eron Sheean, Shane Danielsen | Directed by Eron Sheean
The debut feature from screenwriter Eron Sheean, who was responsible for penning The Divide for Xavier Gens (which also starred Michael Eklund), Errors of the Human Body is a film that belies genre-specific categorisation. Part Michael Crichton medical thriller, part David Cronenberg body-horror, with a hint of the classic Frankenstein, it’s both a challenging and intriguing film – although it is not without its faults.
The film follows Canadian scientist Dr Geoff Burton (Eklund) who takes up a position at a scientific institute in Dresden, Germany, with the intention of continuing his research into random embryonic abnormalities – research borne out of a personal tragedy (the death of his infant son) that has haunted him for years. Hooking up with his former intern, Dr Rebekka Fiedler,...

He's already found success as the writer of Xavier Gens' The Divide, and his debut directorial effort is a chilling German thriller set within the clinical world of genetic research. Errors of the Human Body
Directed by Eron Sheean
Written by Eron Sheean and Shane Danielson
U.S.A./Germany, 2012
There is so much potential in films relating to scientific experiments gone awry that one wonders why there are not more which play at Fantasia. Part of the reason may have to do with the fact that the premise is too limiting and only so many plot development can arise from it. However limited the number of story points may be, the thematic structure they may adopt are multitudinous, whether the screenwriters and directors go for emotional gravitas, horror or more science-fiction based material. Eron Sheean opts for a healthy mixture of all three in his latest film, Errors of the Human Body, where hopeful scientific research for the future has immediate impacts on the present and bring back harsh memories from the past.
