President Joe Biden still plans to attend this weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner even after Vice President Kamala Harris has tested positive for Covid and health officials are warning that the most recent variant is especially contagious.

The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis on Friday released a 46-page report confirming what was readily apparent to most reasonable, informed Americans: The Trump administration made “deliberate efforts” to undermine America’s response to Covid-19 for political purposes.
Most of the documents cited in the committee’s report have already been made public, including ones that show how the administration played down the importance of testing and even prevented public officials from holding briefings to educate the public on the highly contagious disease. New information released Friday, however,...

Dr. Deborah Birx, coordinator of the White House’s coronavirus task force under Trump, says the former president’s response to the virus caused hundreds of thousands to die.
In a new CNN documentary set to air on Sunday night, Birx said the initial wave of deaths caused by covid-19 in the US were mostly unpreventable, but the majority of deaths following the first 100,000 “could have been mitigated or decreased substantially.”

New York, Dec 25 (Ians) Back in January 2020, Lauren Gardner, co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering, was tracking measles data when a couple of her PhD students began talking about a new coronavirus in China.
Many of these students were Chinese and they were already tracking it closely. In a few hours over one evening, one of Gardner's students built an original Covid-19 dashboard from scratch.
By the end of February, the Johns Hopkins global dashboard was getting a billion hits a day. By the summer, it was 4.5 billion hits a day and more than a billion "feature requests" to access the underlying data.
2020 has been a breakout year for visualizations at the intersection of data science, epidemiology and predictive models, focusing the energies of large groups of data scientists coming together to

“Here’s how we’re going to do it: First, healthcare workers [will get the vaccine],” Fauci explained. “Your McSteamys, your McDreamys, what have you.” Next will be “super-seniors,” which Birx described as “anybody named Mildred, Horace, Blanche, Mable or Walter.” After that, “we’ll move on to prisoners, then teachers, then sick people,” all of whom will be vaccinated by “July 20-bada-bada,” Fauci confirmed.

As the United States approached the date commemorating the attack on Pearl Harbor, it found itself facing a new tragic event. In the five days leading up to December 7, the average number of daily deaths in America related to Covid-19 was 2,566. That surpassed the tragic loss of 2,403 American lives on that Day of Infamy 79 years ago.
What’s more, Covid-19 became the leading cause of death in the U.S. last week. And it is projected to get worse.
Health officials long have warned about a potential surge after family gatherings and travel during Thanksgiving. Essentially, because numbers had already been increasing moving into winter, that would put us with a “surge on top of a surge,” according to Los Angeles County Public Health director Barbara Ferrer and Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Fox News’ Will Cain said on Monday that it’s because of Americans’ “individual spirit” that they don’t follow “sensible” pandemic regulations, like wearing masks to stop the spread of Covid-19.
“Everyone is trying to be safe,” he said, “but what’s going to happen for policymakers is at some point they’re going to have to realize Americans just are not going to follow guidance no matter how sensible it might be. There’s just an individual spirit.”
“Fox & Friends” co-host Steve Doocy jumped in, pointing out that “this is a crazy time in American history where we don’t quite understand how easy it is to get.”
The fill-in anchor, who was replacing Brian Kilmeade for the day, came up with the “individual spirit” label earlier in the conversation, when he said, “I don’t know what we will call it — individual spirit? — but I’m not...

Cooler weather is leading to more indoor socializing among families and friends, which leads to people taking off their masks. It’s a move which White House coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx warns is leading to “troubling signs” of an increased viral spread.
Birx already sees the Northeast experiencing a rise of new cases.
“What we’re seeing in the community is much more spread occurring in households and in social occasions, small gatherings where people have come inside, taken off their mask to eat or drink or socialize with one another,” Birx said Thursday at a roundtable discussion at the University of Connecticut in Hartford, Connecticut.
The new pattern mimics that seen in Southern states at the beginning of summer, she said, when people began heading to indoor areas to escape heat and humidity.

Comedian Sarah Cooper, who has found fame on social media by lip-synching President Donald Trump’s unhinged coronavirus tangents, has scored a Netflix comedy special.
“Sarah Cooper: Everything’s Fine” will premiere in fall 2020, with Cooper flanked by an array of talent: Natasha Lyonne will direct, and Maya Rudolph will executive produce, along with Danielle Renfrew Behrens and Lyonne through their production company Animal Pictures. Cooper and Paula Pell will also executive produce. The special, described as being “short interviews, sketches” and vignettes, will feature Cooper and guests on the topics of “politics, race, gender, class, and other light subjects.”
Cooper, a former Google employee, has become a viral star during the Covid-19 pandemic. Her first video, “How to Medical” on April 23, went viral on TikTok, Twitter and other social media platforms. In it, Cooper plays Trump talking about “light” and “disinfectant” as possible coronavirus cures, with a confused Dr.

Los Angeles Coronavirus Update: Mayor Eric Garcetti Sees “Small, Hopeful Signs” Of Pandemic Progress
“Two weeks ago,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, “I stood before you at one of these briefings and said that the virus was taking control from us and that we needed to take back control from the virus. And that message tonight has not changed.”
But, said the mayor, “We have some small, hopeful signs that reflect our resilience.”
On Friday, Los Angeles County reported one of its lowest recent daily totals of new coronavirus cases. The county tallied 1,949 new infections, down from reports over the past week that have daily added 2,000 or more cases to the total. The dip, however, was attributed to delays in test results from the state, and Garcetti indicated that proportionally higher numbers will likely result in coming days as the backlog clears.
Disclaimer: Today's low numbers are due to lab reporting delays and incomplete hospitalization data.

“You may have seen some clickbait headlines this week that California now has more diagnosed cases than any state in America,” said Garcetti. “But I think those headlines are misleading. Of course we have more cases because we have more people.”
“I track per capita cases,” said the mayor. “By that measure we are 24th of 50 states right now.”
White House coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx was a little less sanguine about the state of the state on Friday.
“What we have right now are essentially three New Yorks,” Dr. Birx told Today, referring to the onetime epicenter of the pandemic in the nation. The “three New Yorks” she singled out were California, Florida and Texas.
Additionally, one day after California reported a grim new peak in coronavirus deaths, Friday saw another record high with 159 Covid-related deaths, marking back-to-back record days.
Garcetti did not mention the records.
“Four of the the six key indicators the county uses to track progress are heading in the right direction,” said Garcetti. Those include PPE, hospitalizations, new cases, new deaths, test positivity and acute care bed capacity.
Hospitalizations have been an area of concern in recent weeks, with the number topping 2,200 in Los Angeles County for the past five days, the highest levels of the pandemic.
But health officials have noted this week that the number of new hospitalizations in L.A. County appeared to be leveling off, and possibly even decreasing, following a precipitous climb in mid-July.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in area hospitals dipped to 1,928 on Friday. County officials said the figures are incomplete, however, due to “changes in reporting requirements from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.”
“These numbers do appear to be stabilizing,” said the mayor. But, “Overall our public health conditions remain fragile.”...

With Florida and California both current Covid-19 epicenters, Walt Disney Parks said Friday that it has tweaked its mask policy for a second time in a week, while Universal canceled Halloween Horror Nights at its two theme parks for this year.
Enhanced safety protocols for Walt Disney World in Orlando and Downtown Disney in Anaheim (where the theme park remains closed) specify that not all face coverings qualify as masks. Updated guidance says neck gaiters and open-chin triangle bandanas “are not considered appropriate and are prohibited from being worn.” Ties or ear loops are required.

President Donald Trump said Thursday that plans for a large-scale Republican National Convention are being canceled, an acknowledgement of the flare-up in coronavirus cases in Jacksonville, Fl.
Instead, Trump said that some convention activities will take place in its original locale, Charlotte, Nc, but suggested that there would be virtual “tele-rallies.” He still plans to deliver an acceptance speech but in a “different form,” he said during a White House press briefing.
“We won’t do a big, crowded convention per se,” Trump told reporters on Thursday.
He and the Rnc moved the major events of the convention, including his acceptance speech, to Jacksonville last month after a tiff with the governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, a Democrat. Cooper had told the party that they would not be able guarantee that they would be able to hold a large-scale gathering as in past cycles, given the outbreak of the virus.

“Tonight,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said, “I want to announce new changes” to the restrictions put in place to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
The mayor announced, as of tomorrow, the city will “allow all retail businesses” to let customers inside their stores so long as those businesses abide by Covid prevention best practices, which includes allowing only 50 percent of capacity.
The ruling will also allow drive-in movies and houses of worship to reopen. It applies not just to L.A. city, but also to the county, as the guidelines were also approved on Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors.
The changes set the stage for the county to request a variance from the state to permit swifter reopening of other sectors.
“This is a good day for L.A.,” said Garcetti.

Even as government officials scolded and health experts warned, Americans flocked to the beaches this Memorial Day weekend after two months of confinement.
Beaches from the East coast to the West coast and along the southern tip in Florida, Texas and more were packed, and lakes saw an influx of boaters and party people. Although many practiced social distancing, not everyone did, and the large crowds made the six-foot rule moot in many instances.
Some areas had to turn away crowds, so great was the number seeking some sunshine and surf.
“I have never seen this many umbrellas,” one beachgoer, Tiffany Mathers, told the Tampa Bay Times. “This is not social-distancing at all. There’s way too many people.”
This occurred as White House advisor Dr. Deborah Birx was making the rounds of Sunday morning talk shows, warning citizens not to let up in social distancing practices.

Los Angeles County reported 1,032 new Covid-19 cases and 41 new deaths today in the daily total released by the Health Dept. That brings the La County total to date to 44,055 cases and 2,090 deaths in the pandemic.
The County crossed the 2,000 deaths total on Thursday. The overall Us death total is nearing 100,000.
Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House’s coronavirus response coordinator, identified the Los Angeles metro area and two other major cities on Friday as places of concern because they have a “persistent high number of cases” yet remain closed. She also cited Washington, D.C. and Chicago as hotspots, and called for the Centers for Disease Control to work with the metro areas to study where the cases are coming from, and to come up with a way to prevent them in the future.

In a letter to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and L.A. County Department of Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer on Friday, Assistant U.S. Attorney General Eric Dreiband said the duo’s recent comments suggesting that stay-at-home orders may stay in place long-term in Los Angeles “may be both arbitrary and unlawful.”
Ferrer said at a county supervisors’ meeting earlier this month that some form of stay-at-home orders may likely stay in place “for the next three months.” She later walked those comments back.
Garcetti also said in a media interview that Los Angeles would “never be completely open until we have a cure” for the virus.”
Mayor Garcetti, when asked on Friday at his daily Covid press conference about the letter said, “We’re not guided by politics in this. We’re guided by science…There is nothing else. We’re able to do this and save lives.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on Monday that he will allow several types of businesses, including movie theaters, to reopen at strictly limited capacity on Friday as it becomes the latest state to try to restart its economy following the coronavirus shutdown.
Restaurants, retail stores and museums are also allowed to reopen under the new order, while hair salons, gyms and bars will have to stay closed. But theaters and other approved businesses will be required to operate at 25% capacity. Gov. Abbott said that this plan was approved by Dr. Deborah Birx, who is overseeing the Trump Administration’s pandemic response efforts. However, he acknowledged that this capacity limit may lead businesses to decide to stay closed until restrictions can be further loosened.
“This is permission to open, not a requirement,” Abbott said.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has announced that movie theaters will be allowed to reopen on Friday, along with restaurants, retail stores and museums.
Texas becomes the latest state to allow theaters to open, though the major chains are not expected to restart business until at least July. Georgia allowed its theaters to reopen on Monday, though as yet it appears that few, if any, have chosen to do so.
Abbott acknowledged that many companies would choose to remain closed.
“This is permission to open, not a requirement,” Abbott said.
Abbott added theaters and other establishments would be allowed to operate at only 25% capacity, which may make it uneconomical for many businesses to operate.
The major theater chains are unlikely to reopen without the support of major studio releases, which in turn are unlikely to be distributed until theaters across the country are able to screen them.

Fox News’ Bret Baier isn’t convinced by President Donald Trump’s Friday claim that he was being sarcastic when he suggested ingesting or injecting disinfectants to treat Covid-19.
“Well, that’s not how it looked in the briefing and not how it came across in the briefing,” Baier said of Trump’s Thursday night statements, which he made to Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus task force coordinator, during a press conference.
“What’s problematic for this president is that sometimes he goes on these riffs and when you’re dealing with medical things, statements — when you are riffing from a podium — sometimes that works great on other topics when politics comes into play,” Baier continued. “But when riffing about possible cures or treatments, it didn’t seem like it was coming off as sarcastic when he was talking and turning to Dr. Birx on the side.”

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany blamed the media Friday for the negative attention President Trump’s comments about injecting disinfectant has received.
“President Trump has repeatedly said that Americans should consult with medical doctors regarding coronavirus treatment, a point that he emphasized again during yesterday’s briefing,” McEnany said in a statement. “Leave it to the media to irresponsibly take President Trump out of context and run with negative headlines.”
The media wasn’t the only industry to respond to Trump’s unsafe suggestion. Lysol — the manufacturer of cleaning products — put out a statement early Friday morning stating that “under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body.”

President Donald Trump’s briefing on Thursday was devoted in part to a presentation from a Homeland Security official who presented data suggesting the coronavirus does not survive as long in high humidity and sunlight.
The presentation came from William Bryan, an official with the Department of Homeland Security, who said that solar light had a “powerful” impact on killing the virus. But he also said that they were studying how disinfectants eradicate the virus within minutes.

As Georgia prepares to reopen parts of their economy as soon as Friday, one of the big questions at the latest White House press briefing was whether it is a wise decision.

At the White House briefing, Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of the White House’s Coronavirus Task Force, expressed a degree of skepticism over just how some of the businesses will be able to comply.

President Donald Trump announced new proposed guidelines on Thursday for how and when the U.S. economy can reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic, which include a phased plan for audiences to return to movie theaters.
The plan, dubbed “Opening Up America Again,” sets a series of proposed benchmarks, or “gating criteria,” that states and regions (like counties and metropolitan areas) would have to satisfy before they could start to relax social distancing restrictions and business closures. They include:
There must be a downward trajectory of reported flu-like illnesses and cases with Covid-like symptoms. There must be a downward trajectory of documented Covid-19 cases, or positive Covid-19 tests. Hospitals must be able to treat all patients without crisis care, and have a robust testing program for at-risk health care workers.

CNN revealed in a Thursday article that Vice President Mike Pence’s office has barred top health officials from appearing on the network unless it begins to air President Donald Trump’s coronavirus briefings in full.
“When you guys cover the briefings with the health officials then you can expect them back on your air,” a Pence spokesperson told CNN, according to the article.
The health officials currently not allowed on air include Dr. Deborah Birx and Dr. Anthony Fauci, both visible members of the White House’s task force on the coronavirus, which is led by Pence. Their sections of the press conferences are often cut away from by CNN so that the on-air hosts can do analysis and fact-checking.
CNN has been informed by a spokesman for Vice President Michael Pence that it cannot have access to top government health officials grappling with the nation’s coronavirus pandemic unless it televises specific portions of the Trump Administration’s daily briefings on the spread of the disease.
“When you guys cover the briefings with the health officials then you can expect them back on your air,” a Pence spokesperson told CNN, according to a report posted Thursday.
