Image
Near the end of fashion week, and a day before the VMAs, New York is even more bustling than usual. At Manhattan’s Sei Less, Detroit rapper Babyface Ray and I got a glimpse of just how popular he — and upscale Asian food — are in the industry. A slew of celebs and industry heads walked down into a private room on the restaurant’s lower level: Sacramento Kings forward Demar Derozan, rapper Jason Martin (fka Problem), Def Jam CEO Tunji Balogun, CAA’s Shawn “Pecas” Costner, and a couple of...

Detroit Rapper 42 Dugg Arrested After Avoiding 6-Month Prison Sentence
Image
Detroit rapper 42 Dugg was arrested Wednesday in Michigan after failing to turn himself in to serve an outstanding six-month prison sentence.

In March 2020, a federal grand jury in Georgia charged the rising rapper, real name Dion Hayes, with possessing a firearm, a felony given Hayes was previously convicted of carjacking and firearms possessions in his native Michigan in 2011. Hayes pleaded guilty to those charges in Nov. 2020, and was sentenced to three years probation.

However, his probation was revoked in Feb. 2022 after Hayes was arrested for obstruction of law enforcement...

How Detroit Rapper Babyface Ray Already Made One of the Year’s Best Rap Albums
Image
A favorite within Michigan’s increasingly dominant rap scene, Babyface Ray made his career with the kind of deadpan raps that are as icy as winter in the Midwest. Like a Blaxploitation character in rap form, the menacing bars he spits arrive with an almost impossible equanimity. “I done seen it all. That’s why I am so cool,” the 31-year-old rapper says over Zoom in Los Angeles. “Nothing really fazes me.”

Ray’s new album Face, out today, opens with an audacious beat switch that illustrates the rapper’s confident nonchalance.

French Montana: ‘Get Hip or Get Left With the Dinosaurs’
Image
‘’I was saying that they had amnesia about everything: The Cocaine City DVDs, the Coke Boys era, from Chinx to the Max B collaborations,” French Montana tells me. “I felt like they have had amnesia about my accomplishments.” The rapper spent the past couple of years out of the spotlight, in part to focus on fatherhood, in part to focus on his health. He quit drinking after being hospitalized in 2019 for exhaustion — or, as he put it, “turning up too much.”

Montana’s new album, They Got Amnesia, plays on...

The remaining episodes of Season 15, postponed by the pandemic, aired in April.

Leading up to the Season 16 premiere, Wild ‘N Out is partnering with technology platform, Stage Ten, for an hour-long live interactive digital special. In the special, fans will be able to connect with the cast via real-time comments and directly impact gameplay through live voting,...

Image
Yo Gotti has released a new music video for “Drop,” his recent single featuring DaBaby.

“Drop,” which was produced by J. White Did It, boasts a hard-hitting beat, glitchy synths, and a no-nonsense chorus: “Drop, shake your ass then/Stop, with your best friend.” The accompanying clip, directed by Arrad, is a complementary blast of uncut summer hedonism as Yo Gotti and DaBaby preside over a wild pool party.

“Drop” marks Yo Gotti’s first solo single of 2021 and it follows his December 2020 holiday offering, “Wish List.” The Memphis rapper’s most recent album,...
