The rich, varied and enticing lineup of Uruguay’s inaugural Arca Intl. Film Festival underscores one fact from the festival’s get-go: In commercial terms, art-themed movies are not necessarily a backwater niche, reserved for high-brow aesthetes.
MSNBC Films won what is described as an intense bidding war to secure rights to Jr’s “Paper and Glue”; Sony Pictures Classics acquired U.S. rights to animated heist caper “Ruben Brandt, Collector,” Zeitgeist Film/Kino Lorber took those to “Beyond the Visible – Hilma af Klint”; further titles are handled by doyens of arthouse film or documentary sales such as Films Boutique (“Last and First Men”) and Deckert Distribution (“Caveman–The Hidden Giant”).
That market punch is no coincidence. For Arca’s open air big screen sessions, “we’ve chosen titles to appeal to a broad public, fiction titles, or documentaries which are attractive for their subjects or form, or even an...

Whether or not the Bristolian is really the ‘Picasso of the 21st century’, this fawning documentary confirms how well he fits the social-media age
Here is a watchable, if slaveringly adulatory documentary profile of the yet-to-be-conclusively-identified artist, whose increasingly pricey work has spawned its own mini-industry of blokes with angle grinders chopping stencils off walls and doors almost before the paint is dry.
Directed by Seamus Haley and Aurélia Rouvier, this film covers most of the bases: beginning with the 2018 shredding of his Girl With Balloon painting shortly after it had sold at auction, and working back through earlier greatest hits such as the Dismaland theme park, the Walled Off hotel in Bethlehem in the West Bank, and the Mobile Lovers gift to a Bristol youth club. It also very much bends the knee, allowing statements such as “Banksy is the Picasso of the 21st century” to pass through unchallenged...

Exclusive: He Dreams Of Giants, the feature documentary about Terry Gilliam’s long-troubled Don Quixote adaptation, has been picked up for UK release by Blue Finch Films.
The doc is a follow up to Keith Fulton and Lou Pepe’s previous chronicle of Gilliam’s doomed efforts to get his film made, 2002’s Lost In La Mancha. Both films were produced by Lucy Darwin. The deal was made by Mike Chapman on behalf of Blue Finch and Ed Parodi on behalf of Film Constellation.
Mike Chapman commented, “We were huge fans of the documentary upon first seeing it and are thrilled to be working on the release in the UK and Ireland. It’s a compelling look at the trials and tribulations of the artistic process, where fact is perhaps wilder than fiction.”
Blue Finch has also acquired Tribeca selection Banksy Most Wanted, an investigation into the real identity of the infamous street artist.

It’s always funny in a crisis like the current Covid-19 pandemic to see people screaming about how they don’t believe artists should receive financial relief. Unless they’ve been sitting on their lawn and staring at the sky these past two months, however, they’ve dealt very extensively with art on a daily basis. Maybe it’s entertainment like books, TV, movies, or music. Maybe it’s property such as homes, furniture, or interior design. And if we dig a bit further, we discover these people are also generally the sort of Ayn Rand objectivists who demand compensation be given for “genius.” You can’t simultaneously not pay for media and spout off about how nothing should be given away for free without becoming that which you’ve used your histrionics to rail against.
