Chicago – With the temperature outside at a cool 60 degrees, it was a perfect night to throw on an old punk-rock shirt and take in the band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. The neon sign of the Concord Music Hall flickered against the Chicago skyline. Once inside, the crowd of the all-ages show stood shoulder to shoulder as the venue temperature heated up – anticipating a band with more than 20 years of classic-rock history.
They didn’t disappoint the saturated and boisterous crowd. Frontman Spike Slawson – wearing a shimmery gold jacket – led an onslaught of high-energy, devil-may-care cover tunes that brought attitude, style and substance to the songs that ranged from show tunes to Motown. Against Me! get intergalactic this week in the music video for their new song, “Crash.” The song is taken off the band’s upcoming record, Shape Shift With Me, due out on September 16th.
Though the video clip is about as low budget as it gets, that isn’t going to ruin the vibes of how the band feels about it. Drummer Atom Willard (jokingly) talked about the difficulty of the video’s creation in a recent press release, saying:
This was one of the most difficult videos we’ve ever made because it was filmed in outer space. The time it took to get there alone was enough to make some bands back down from the challenge, but we really believed it was the only way to fully realize our vision.

There is something to be said about a film that speaks out loudly against the religion of intolerance and the culture of violence.
And eye for an eye may be fine for an era gone-by. In today's day and age, just chill, and curb the rage.
That's the message this loud and melodramatic film puts across with a deafening gusto and a blinding sincerity.
While the treatment of the theme of anti-terrorism harks back to the Bollywood potboilers of the 1970s, there is clearly an abundance of passionate integrity in the depiction of the Good Religion and Bad Religion. The characters are seen sighing, bellowing, chortling.

Each week Cinelinx will chose one director for an in-depth examination of the “signatures” that they leave behind in their work. This week, with the release of The Lone Ranger, we examine the trademark style and calling signs of Gore Virbinski as director.
When we consider the abundance of CGI-fueled movies these days, there are certain directors whose work has steered the industry to become what it is today. The films of directors such as J.J. Abrams, David Fincher, Christopher Nolan, and even Zach Snyder have used computer technology to create stylized stories that audiences can’t seem to get enough of. Gore Verbinski isn’t typically included on this list of new-era heavyweights, but his career has also ridden on the back of CGI. Arguably, Verbinski has taken his involvement with technology one step further than many others by being an active developer and early-adopter of new technologies and methods.

Not many bands can draw a crowd from so many generations. From 6 year olds in banners bigger than they are to teens with My Chemical Romance tattoos to middle age punks with Bad Religion jackets they are all being represented here today.
All Time Low are essentially a Blink 182 tribute band to the kids who were too young for the three piece. Their perky pop with guitars is entertaining enough although unoriginal. The more upbeat ‘Time Bomb’ and ‘Lost In Stereo’ go down best in a half empty stadium. Jack Barakat, per usual, lowers the tone with butt and your mum jokes and it just feels unnecessary and a tad creepy.
With a back catalogue like the Kaiser Chiefs it’s hard to not get a crowd singing. Ricky Wilson is on form running from corner to corner of the stage and up the frame work like a hyperactive child.

Which music would you choose to accompany a reading of The Great Gatsby? Nikki Lusk chooses Frank Ocean's Channel Orange as a fitting modern companion to F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel
On my blog The Book Tuner, I match music to books – pairing those that provide complementary reading and listening experiences. And with Baz Luhrmann's film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel The Great Gatsby finally opening in Australia, it seems an appropriate moment to seek out a musical match for the book. The 1925 novel lays bare the moral vacuity at the heart of the American Dream, and it finds a modern companion in Frank Ocean's 2012 album Channel Orange. Each draws your gaze to a glittering facade, the former built with gems of sentences, the latter with silky-smooth vocals. But these facades soon crumble, leaving you standing amid the rubble wondering what went wrong.

Hardcore fans of Sloan will enjoy news the band's releasing a limited edition 7" vinyl single "Hardcore Package" that also includes a covers album of classic hardcore punk songs.
According to the band's official site, the package includes the vinyl single with two new songs entitled "Jenny" and "It's In You, It's In Me." Meanwhile, perhaps the big score is a bonus digital download featuring "songs of the bands that were soundtrack to Sloan's youth" and date from 1978 to 1984.
The album is led by three Angry Samoans covers ("Gas Chamber," "Gimme Sopor" and "Hot Cars") along with two from 7 Seconds ("Bully" and "This Is The Angry"). Minor Threat, Bad Religion, Black Flag, Circle Jerks and The Descendents are also covered on the album.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart may spend some time apart, but it doesn't look like there's any trouble in Robsten town. Shortly after the Twilight hunk was spotted having a beach day sans K.Stew, the Hollywood couple was photographed together at a gas station in Los Angeles. Rob kept cool in a pair of black shorts and Bad Religion tee, while Kristen wore a pair of denim jeans, white T-shirt and backwards cap. Robsten also got to enjoy some quality time together (along with hundreds of their close, personal friends) at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, Calf., last weekend. But unfortunately, the pair will now have to spend some time apart. R.Pattz was seen...

Despite oft-overlapping acts, massive music festivals have a tendency to always reflect their surroundings. No matter if Coachella is being headlined by a holographic Tupac or a bill brimming with early-90s Britpop nostalgia, the festival is always going to to feel like an outgrowth of Los Angeles--and be very different from Chicago's Lollapalooza.
This necessary connection is precisely why the first ever BottleRock Napa Valley is so interesting.

R&B singer Frank Ocean was among the favorites in the weeks leading up to this year's 55th Annual Grammy Awards broadcast, riding the wave of critical appreciation that has buoyed the 25-year-old since he released "channel Orange" in July.
Early in the show, Ocean won Grammys for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (for "No Church in the Wild," with Jay-z and Kanye West). He was also nominated for Record of the Year and Best New Artist, tying with fun., Jay-z, West, Mumford & Sons and Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys for the most nods of the year.
Ocean performed "Forrest Gump" during Sunday night's broadcast, appearing in front of an impressive video installation that recalled Kraftwerk's run at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

Wait, everyone know who Frank Ocean is, right?
Actually, no.
Sure, he dominated the 2012 year-end best albums lists, and is entering the 2013 Grammys with a leading six nominations, including nods for best album and best new artist as well as two for singing the indelible hook on Kanye West and Jay-z's "No Church In The Wild." But Ocean's album "Channel Orange" has only sold 500,000 records and he's simply not a well-known name.
Yes, I know you love Frank's debut "Channel Orange," but your mom probably thinks he's Billy Ocean's son. Before you get out of this article and into our car, let me explain.
As serious music fans, we can get blinded by the fact that just because everyone we know is familiar with a musician or band, it doesn't mean the mainstream is. This was made crystal clear at the Grammys two years ago when Arcade Fire...

Oh Frank Ocean. After you dropped your critically acclaimed debut album, sang at the VMAs and came out on Tumblr, only to have celebs like Beyonce go out of their way to support you, thus proving that there is some shred of goodness left in the world, it’s no wonder you thought you were on a long-term winning streak. Your utterly amazing 2012 is also probably the reason you were cocky and/or foolish enough to drive 90mph in a 65mph zone while smoking pot. You’re like the new Icarus, Frank. You flew too high on wings of weed! Which would actually explain the legend of Icarus…

It was the year of the underdog. Odd Future crooner Frank Ocean went off on his own and captured the world’s attention with his stellar songwriting. Doing very few interviews, and rarely figuring on TV or in front of paparazzi cameras, even during the promotion of his debut album Channel Orange. Ocean let his music speak for itself. With one big exception: the letter he wrote on his Tumblr on July 3. It was a missive that he’d originally planned to include in his liner notes disclosing that his first love was a man. His coming out was met with cheers from fans and peers, who applauded his bravery. A week later, his debut shot to No. 2 on the Billboard charts selling over 130,000 units in its first week. Frank Ocean’s smooth voice, impeccable songwriting and low-key profile are why he’s #10 on our list of celebrities who dominated...

For the second year in a row, I’ve taken it upon myself to boil down some of what I feel is the year’s best music and boil it down to an accessible CD-80-friendly package, with the additional challenge of accompanying them with clips from some of the year’s more notable films. I pushed myself to the limits of my time-cruching abilities this time around; I still fell just shy of my 40-track goal, but I did cram in more movies this year, thanks partially to the brilliant idea of including some choice soundtrack snippets as well.
It’s also a more eclectic bunch than last year: this time around, there’s a little more punk, a little more folk, a little more metal, and a little more hip-hop and r n’ b. I hope you’ll enjoy it. Below, you’ll find a download link with...
