Fugazi’s songs were filled with fierce, ear-catching guitarwork, but out-and-out solos? Not so much. That’s why it’s so fascinating to hear the post-hardcore heroes’ rhythm section, bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty, playing in a new group, the Messthetics, that’s practically built around the idea of giving the guitar room to soar.
Case in point: “Better Wings,” a recently released track from the instrumental trio’s upcoming second LP, Anthropocosmic Nest, out September 6th. After setting up a driving riff, guitarist Anthony Pirog — a seasoned player equally steeped in jazz,...

New York’s annual Winter Jazzfest marathon can be a mad scramble. For two nights in freezing January, dozens of groups in every imaginable style take over various downtown venues. Sets overlap, venues span nearly the whole width of downtown Manhattan from Alphabet City to Soho, crowds can swell to capacity, and if you’re trying to see everything, you might come away vexed.
So for the event’s 15th installment, which took place this past weekend, I made peace early on with the fact that I was only going...

Fugazi may not reactivate anytime soon, but its members are starting to play music with each other again. A new band featuring members Ian MacKaye and Joe Lally and MacKaye’s bandmate in the Evens, Amy Farina, will make its debut at a benefit concert in Washington, D.C. this Sunday. A rep for Fugazi’s label, Dischord, confirmed the appearance and said that the band did not yet have a name and that it was unclear what the group’s plans are beyond the gig.

A massive crowd gathered on a misty Sunday to honor the late grunge pioneer Chris Cornell. The Seattle Museum of Pop Culture unveiled a life-size bronze statue of the late Soundgarden singer, which was commissioned by his widow, Vicky Cornell. She was there with their children Lily, Toni and Christopher, as well as Cornell’s former bandmates Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd.
“It’s a reflection of his light, a light that shone through his music and touched millions,” Cornell said during the ceremony. “A light that he used to illuminate our lives,...

A version of this story on Carrie Brownstein first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
The sketch-comedy series “Portlandia” began with a series of comedy shorts made by actor-comedian Fred Armisen and musician Carrie Brownstein, one of the leaders of the pioneering all-female indie band Sleater-Kinney.
Over eight seasons that ended in March, the show turned into an Emmy favorite, landing its first nomination in 2011 and picking up Outstanding Variety Sketch Series nominations the last four years in a row.
Over the years, Brownstein directed four episodes, receiving her first directing nomination this year for the season opener, “Riot Spray.” In that episode, a former punk band reunites and finds that youthful anger has given way to more mundane middle-aged concerns.

“Our main goal was to make a funny and interesting season,” reveals Carrie Brownstein about wrapping up “Portlandia” after eight years this past season. In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above), she adds, “We didn’t want everyone to die, or get married or have a bunch of children. We were like ‘let’s just give each person a little bit of send off, without being too on the nose about it.’”
The sketch comedy series set in Portland, with most of the characters being played by Brownstein and Fred Armisen. Over the show’s eight years on IFC, it received 22 Emmy nominations with four wins. They have been nominated all four seasons of the Best Variety Sketch Series category, including for the upcoming 2018 ceremony. Brownstein is also nominated for directing the season premiere, “Riot Spray.”

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil and drummer Matt Cameron played together for the first time since the death of Chris Cornell last month at a gig in Denmark. They played together as part of a supergroup called MC50, which pays tribute to the Detroit-based rock group MC5, best known for their leftist politics and the incendiary song “Kick Out the Jams.” At the show, they played “Come Together,” a song off the Kick Out the Jams album.

It doesn’t take a lot of dot-connecting genius to figure why music was a crucial component of “Portlandia,” which recently wrapped its eighth and final season. The host city is a rock town, but more than that, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein came of age in the punk scene, although that was her initial claim to fame and his secret identity. They incorporated so many original songs into the IFC series that you could just about make a claim that it beat “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” through the gate as a major weekly musical-comedy series.
In honor of eight seasons, Variety asked Brownstein (also of Sleater-Kinney fame) and Armisen to weigh in with four highlights each from their show’s substantial library of original tuneage. Some of the duo’s choices involved famous guest stars from the music world or fellow cast members, and in some cases, Armisen chose tunes primarily written by the other partner.

Kurt Vile takes a side gig as Carrie Brownstein's literal in-house roadie in a sketch from Portlandia's ongoing eighth and final season.
The clip opens with Fred Armisen presenting to Brownstein a ridiculously elaborate birthday gift: a music-themed transformation of their house, including rock memorabilia, a Chrissie Hynde mural, a Marshall stack refrigerator and a disgusting, venue-styled bathroom. "I kinda put some toilet paper all over the place, just to make it have that feeling," says Armisen.

‘Portlandia’: Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein Create the Next True Crime Podcast Sensation… Maybe
True crime podcasts are all the rage, but no one gets to see how the secrets are uncovered, cases are chosen, or mistakes are exposed. What matters is the story itself — how it sounds, not how it’s found.
Well, let’s hope it’s not like this.
In an exclusive look at Season 8, “Portlandia” stars and creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein pop into a Portland police station to record a podcast. While they’re welcomed in for an official visit, the two don’t exactly return the professionalism in kind. Their methods are peculiar, motivations less than pure, and end result not what anyone had in mind.
Turns out making a podcast may not be pretty, but it makes for a pretty good sketch. The video below is not only a new look at the final season, but the fourth in a series of videos premiering before the Season 8 debut.

With the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's massive Nevermind just a few short weeks away, much attention is being paid to rock's last great era: 1991, a year that was overflowing with important, iconic (and, in some cases, overlooked) albums from bands both big and small. In a lot of ways, it was the year rock truly rocked, and so, to celebrate that fact, MTV News has been asking some of today's biggest acts to remember their favorites form that truly epic year.
So far, we've looked back at Metallica's Black Album, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Dinosaur Jr.'s Green Mind, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, Slint's Spiderland, Pearl Jam's Ten and Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger. Today,...

Brent Green is one of Filmmaker‘s favorite young artists, a wholly original animator and performer who has become something of an art world star on the basis of his idiosyncratic, low-fi short films and live events. Tonight and tomorrow he brings the full evening live version of Gravity is Everywhere Back Then to New York’s The Kitchen. From The Kitchen’s website:
Inspired by the real actions of the eccentric Leonard Wood, filmmaker Brent Green brings to life this love story like no other in his first feature-length film. Shot entirely on the full-scale town he built in his backyard, Green combines animation and stop-motion in an ethereal opus to lovers and tinkerers everywhere. In these performances, Green provides the live narration along with live music by Brendan Canty (Fugazi), Green, Drew Henkels (Drew & the Medicinal Pen), Donna K, Michael McGinley (the Bitter Tears and lead actor in...

The Ann Arbor Film Festival has announced their series of special programs that will run at their 49th annual event on March 22-27 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The four programs include new experimental media work from some very groundbreaking artists, many of whom have had works screened at Aaff in the past.
The first program will include the North American premiere of the latest piece by the audiovisual collective Telcosystems, which is comprised of artists Gideon Kiers, David Kiers and Lucas van der Velden. The group specializes in live performances featuring “real-time, self-structuring, generative processes” created by their own software, as well as the interaction with such processes. Their work is described as an “ongoing search for an own language of non-referential image and sound.”
In addition, Telcosystems will screen their 2009 Aaff Best Experimental Award winning Loudthings; and both Lucas van der Velden and Gideon Kiers will present an entirely...

My criteria for picking Bad Lit’s Movie of the Year is simple: First, I ask myself, “What movie has stuck in my head the most this year?” Then, whatever movie pops to mind first is my selection. But, at the same time, knowing how I think and all, some consideration goes towards what little-seen film do I think could use a little extra attention and a good publicity boost.
That didn’t happen this year.
Brent Green‘s live-action animated feature film Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then is about as close as an underground film can get to being a blockbuster. First of all, it had a theatrical run in NYC at the IFC Center, then Green and his live performance collaborators have been touring with it all over the country and screening the film to major audiences everywhere it goes. And it deserves every bit of attention and acclaim it has gotten.

Happy Fourth of July to all of Bad Lit’s U.S. readers! Celebrate Independence Day by reading all about great independent cinema. Loads of reviews and other surprises in the underground film link list this week:
It seems film festival notices have been going out: Kill Your Television, Hooka Face and the Virgin Boy and Wheels of Death all have been accepted into the Atlanta Underground Film Festival. And Hanging at Picnic Rock has been appropriately selected for the Melbourne Underground Film Festival. If you want a print of the 2010 Chicago Underground Film Festival poster, then indiePulse has the details. Art:21 has an absolutely fascinating history of an early “forgotten” film pioneer, Alice Guy-Blaché, the Head of Production of Gaumont from 1896 to 1906. Rhizome has video and images from Harun Farocki’s Deep Play installation, which is an artistic interpretation of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. j. j. murphy reviews the...

There are tons of bad movies in this world that you can’t wait for them to be over. But, Brent Green’s debut animated feature film, Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then — which is a magnificent movie — contains a scene of such devastating heartbreak and sadness that I was practically praying that the film would end before I would have to witness it.
The film is many things, not the least of which is a love story between two lonely souls, Leonard (Michael McGinley) and Mary (donna k.). From the outset, Green, in his famously shaky narration, informs us that Mary will eventually get sick — very sick — but the...

Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then is the first feature film by underground film animator Brent Green. The film is based on the true story of a man who, in an effort to cure his beloved wife of a terminal illness, built her an immense, puzzle-shaped house. The hope was that the house’s unique layout and construction would have special healing properties.
In addition to being Green’s first feature-length project, Gravity also marks a slightly different approach to animation for the filmmaker. Instead of manipulating stop-motion puppets or life-sized inanimate constructs, Green has used live actors, but still shot the film using stop-motion photography. The centerpiece scene of the film is a stop-motion car crash that was filmed with real cars and live actors.
