[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Breeders” Season 4, Episode 10, “No Matter What: Part Two,” the series finale.]
Typically, when a parent is caught screaming at their child, it’s not the errant adult who needs comforting. But “Breeders” — the FX series about childcare’s unexpected, even unbearable burdens — knows that good moms and dads can have bad moments. Martin Freeman, Chris Addison, and Simon Blackwell’s dark comedy offers itself, time and again, as a shoulder to cry on for caregivers who’ve given so much, they’re no longer themselves. It does so again during Episode 10, “No Matter What,” wrapping its figurative arms around the infuriated father. Well, fathers.
In the series finale, Luke (Oscar Kennedy) is at his wit’s end. He’s been traveling back and forth between Manchester and London, the former for a coveted music production course at the Manchester Institute and the latter to see his girlfriend, Maya (Deepica Stephen), and their newborn son,...

In its fourth and final season, FX’s “Breeders” is ending exactly the way its three creators always wanted: with brutal honesty.
“We did always want it to be honest, that’s for sure,” Martin Freeman told TheWrap in an interview conducted ahead of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. “From me, Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison’s first conversations about this show — when we were making what it would be six or seven years ago — it was basically a collection of all the things that were difficult about being parents.”
Freeman likened those initial conversations to a “comedy therapy session,” adding that he always wanted the show to be “fairly unflinching” and “not too pretty.”
According to the co-creator, executive producer and star, “very, very early on” the plan was to follow the series’ central family from when the kids were very young through college age. “We weren’t exactly...

Breeders, the comedy series about parenting that stars Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard, has been renewed for a fourth season on FX and UK’s Sky.
The series just wrapped its third season on FX this week. All seasons are available on Hulu and soon on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star banner in all other territories.
“Breeders has given us the special opportunity to watch the Worsley family grow with each season, and FX is thrilled to order a fourth season that will bring the next chapter of this hilarious yet brutally honest take on being a parent in today’s world,” said Nick Grad, President of Original Programming at FX Entertainment.
In Season 3, the Worsley family reels from teenage Luke (Alex Eastwood) punching his dad, Paul (Freeman). Paul’s moved out and is staying at his mother-in-law Leah’s (Stella Gonet) house. He should be lonely,...

“There’s no more important job that gets done in life then bringing children into the world, and yet every single person doing it is an amateur,” admits “Breeders” co-creator Chris Addison. He was joined in our recent webchat with co-creator Simon Blackwell, who adds, “I mean you’re vetted more when you get a rescue dog then when you have a child. There’s various visits that have to happen before you’re allowed to have the puppy. And with the kid it’s your job to keep that human being alive for the next 18 years.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Breeders” is the family comedy currently airing its third season on FX, starring Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard, who play a couple struggling with parenthood. Freeman also created the show with Blackwell and Addison. Blackwell serves as writer on the show and Addison as director.

Like the one before it, 2021 was a year in which many of us saw more of our TVs than of our friends and loved ones. It was lucky then, that there was so bloody much of the stuff, despite the pandemic’s best efforts to shut it all down. They might have been delayed, they might have been curtailed, but they weren’t stopped. Returning British TV shows returned like spring lambs, gambolling over the horizon right into your living room.
There was comedy and drama, as well as crime thrillers by the lorryload, and sci-fi and fantasy coming by the… much smaller lorryload.
A Discovery of Witches Season 2 (January)
Based on Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy about the forbidden love between a powerful witch and a centuries-old vampire, A Discovery Of Witches debuted on Sky in autumn 2018 (read our reviews here) and was renewed for series two and three almost straight away.

It’s not unusual, in the world of Doctor Who, for the same actor to play more than one role on screen. From classic to modern Doctor Who, Nicholas Courtney, Ian Marter, Lalla Ward, Jaqueline Hill, Jean Marsh, Adjoa Andoh, Eve Myles, Naoko Mori, Vinette Robinson and more have all played multiple parts in the whoniverse. Before she debuted as companion Martha Jones, Freema Agyeman was a Torchwood employee who fell foul of the Cybermen in series two’s ‘Army of Ghosts’. Karen Gillan was a seer in series four episode ‘The Fires of Pompeii’ before she recurred as Eleven’s companion Amy Pond. Even the Doctor has had test runs. Colin Baker played a Gallifreyan commander in season twenty before taking over from Peter Davison. Peter Capaldi appeared in ‘The Fires of Pompeii’ as well as playing John Frobisher on Torchwood before taking up residence in the Tardis.

Breeders is a dark comedy. But towards the end of the second season of the Martin Freeman- and Daisy Haggard-fronted parenting series, it gets even darker.
Season 2 of the FX and Sky series starts with their children, Luke (now played by Alex Eastwood) and Ava (Eve Prenelle), six years older than they were in Season 1, thus serving up brand-new parenting challenges for Freeman’s Paul and Haggard’s Ally.
Luke’s increasing anxiety and Ava’s growing independence added some new and uncharted complications into the existing chaotic mix of stretched resources, lack of time and the fine art of winging it while looking like you know what you’re doing.
Paul’s parents, Jackie and Jim (Joanna Bacon and Alun Armstrong), are older too, as is Ally’s mother Leah (Stella Gonet), leading Paul and Ally to find that they now have to parent the generation above...

FX renewed its parenting comedy “Breeders” last week. The second season, which aired this spring, jumped ahead six years with new actors portraying the children of the characters Paul and Ally Worsley played by Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard. Co-creator, executive producer and occasional director Chris Addison explains in an exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above), “When we originally sat and thought of what this show would be, we’d always imagined that we would tell about three stages of parenting, partly because we wanted the show to be about parenting as an experience and parenting changes so much as children grow.”
Co-creator, executive producer, head writer and showrunner Simon Blackwell reveals as he begins to write the next season that they might go back on this intention, due to cast additions of Alex Eastwood and Eve Prenelle as children Luke and Ava. He explains, “It absolutely...

“Breeders” has been renewed for Season 3 at FX.
The comedy series starring Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard wrapped up its second season on May 17. Season 3 will debut in 2022.
“Delighted that we’ve got three seasons,” said series showrunner and co-creator Simon Blackwell. “One more and it’s a pizza. This is such a superb team to work with, and it’s a pleasure and a privilege to make the show. I can’t wait to see what terrible and brilliant but let’s face it mainly terrible things will happen to the Worsley family in the next 10 episodes.”
“Breeders” explores the parental paradox that you’d happily die for your children, but quite often also want to kill them. In Season 2, Luke (Alex Eastwood) is now 13 years old and Ava (Eve Prenelle) is 10, serving up brand new parenting challenges for Paul (Freeman) and Ally (Haggard). The first scene in Season 1 of Breeders arrived fully formed for Martin Freeman courtesy of a dream, he said during the FX series’ panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event.
In his imagined experience, Freeman paced the stairs of his home on the way to admonish his children, who were refusing to sleep. Trying to contain his simmering anger, Freeman attempted to talk himself down, or at the very least, persuade himself to keep a cool head. Inevitably, however, as he reached the bedroom, he unleashed hell.
The FX comedy plays this out, almost beat-by-beat, as the besieged Paul wrangles with his rage. It sets the tone for the first two seasons of the Avalon-produced comedy, which was conceived over therapeutic lunches between Freeman and writers Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison, during which they ruminated on the darker side of parenting.

Though Season 3 of the Avalon-produced Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard series has not been formally renewed, they are working up new ideas should FX and Sky signal the green light.

2020 in British TV comedy brought us Maisie Williams as a kickass survivalist in a pickle, and a new parenting comedy from the hugely talented Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison starring Martin Freeman.
To add to that, there was also a fresh batch of comedians playing exaggerated versions of themselves in self-penned sitcoms, including Katherine Ryan, Mae Martin, Sara Pascoe, Kayleigh Llewellyn, Lucy Beaumont and Jon Richardson.
Here’s the skinny on all those new shows and more. Here’s what arrived in 2019, and here are the new British TV dramas that arrived in 2020.

Martin Freeman-fronted comedy “Breeders” is heading back into production on Monday.
Cameras have resumed rolling in Greater London on the second season of the Sky and FX Networks series, following a 16-week suspension due to the Covid-19 crisis. Produced by Avalon (“Catastrophe”), the show is understood to be adhering to strict coronavirus protocols, which were signed off earlier this summer.
The show is the latest to get back into production in the U.K., where the industry is gradually coming back to life after a months-long shutdown. Protocols were published in late May, and an insurance fund with government support was unveiled last month. Netflix and BBC drama “The Serpent” recently wrapped its shoot, after relocating to the U.K. from Thailand.

Like most of us these days, “Black Panther” and “Sherlock” star Martin Freeman’s life is on hold and he is stuck at home. Planned film and TV projects for the in-demand actor are either postponed or up in the air.
“I’m not doing that much apart from reading and trying to keep fit to make sure I don’t eat myself into oblivion,” says Freeman, speaking from his house in the U.K.
Freeman mostly recently starred in 10-episode parenting comedy “Breeders,” which debuted on FX and Hulu in the U.S. and Sky in the U.K. at the beginning of March, just ahead of coronavirus lockdowns.
Freeman, who also co-created the show, stars as a caring but stressed father in the Avalon Television production, alongside on-screen partner Daisy Haggard (“Back to Life”). Both their characters juggle full-time careers, ageing parents, a mortgage, upheavals in their relationship...

Between “Fleabag” and “Veep” having ended and “Atlanta,” “Barry,” “PEN15” and “Russian Doll” taking extended hiatuses, the comedy races at the Emmys this year are wide open, ready to embrace a breakout hit that the season has yet to deliver. The savior could be “Breeders,” a half-hour about parenting — not horses — that premiered its 10-episode debut season on FX this month, with each episode available on Hulu mere hours after its initial broadcast. Ratings ticked up this week for the fourth episode to the best viewership numbers since the pilot. The show is “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, which sums up the consensus from critics: “A provocative addition to the growing slate of shows about parents behaving badly, ‘Breeders” take on the realities of child-rearing are as hilarious as they are cringe-inducing.”
