Take Tom Hanks’ example, whose popularity stems from his roles in major blockbusters like Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, and Saving Private Ryan, making him one of Hollywood’s top actors. But that is not the only thing the 67-year-old is good at; he is also a terrific voice actor and is equally adept at comedy and impersonation.

Many mysteries remain unanswered in the world of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece. One such mystery that has stuck around ever since the start of the franchise is what are the true powers and intentions of The Five Elders who control the world government.
Amongst many of their motives, a theory put forward by this user on Reddit reveals how The Five Elders (or the Gorosei) are purposefully spreading diseases around the world. The user has managed to somehow link the group of these five elders to Hindu Mythology, and it surprisingly makes sense.

The Indonesian horror film Suzzanna: Kliwon Friday Night is an example of a film that might entertain more in cinemas when you watch it with a crowd full of strangers than it does on Netflix. Sitting in your room, you might not feel what the film was going for. Directed by Guntur Soeharjanto, Suzzanna: Kliwon Friday Night is gory where it needs to be and also has that comedic touch, reminiscent of classical horror films from Hollywood. The story of the film is pretty straightforward, but with proper execution, the idea is brought to fruition. The film confuses in the beginning about if it’s going towards more of a ‘ghostly’ universe, but then mixes it with body horror. The performances in this film will be polarizing, but I feel Luna Maya, the Indonesian star, hits the perfect note for this film.

Very little has been heard from Indonesian filmmaker Mouly Surya since her buzzy 2017 Cannes title Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts.
“I’ve been in the pandemic like everybody else, wearing a mask, staying at home afraid if I step out of the house that I might die, and taking the whole family with me,” Surya told Deadline at the Tokyo Film Festival, where she is set to receive the honorary Kurosawa Akira Award.
Surya has released three features. Her debut, Fiction, won four awards, including Best Picture at the Festival Film Indonesia in 2008. Her second feature, What They Don’t Talk About When They Talk About Love (2013), was the first Indonesian film to be selected for the Sundance Film Festival. In 2017, her third feature, Marlina, was released in theaters in 14 countries, including the US, Canada, and Japan, following it’s Cannes debut. It also won the Grand Prize at...

Following a generation of organizational drift, the Tokyo International Film Festival has charted a course towards greater global influence under the ambitious leadership of current chairman Hiroyasu Ando. A career diplomat for Japan’s Foreign Service, Ando took the helm of the Tokyo festival in mid-2019 and quickly set about remaking the event, changing its location, shaking up the programming ranks, recruiting arthouse star Hirokazu Kore-eda to program a seminar series and adding more glamor to the after-dark parties and filmmaker fetes. A lot of that revitalization went unseen by the international film community, however, thanks to the long interregnum of the pandemic. In 2023, the Tokyo festival’s renewed outlook will be harder to miss.
“Now that the coronavirus disaster is fully over, we were able to make further progress in moving forward and upgrading our festival,” Ando tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Lauderhill (Florida), Aug 12 (Ians) West Indies captain Rovman Powell won the toss and elected to bat first against India in the fourth T20I at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium here on Saturday.
West Indies are currently leading the five-game series 2-1.
After winning the toss, Powell said Jason Holder is back after recovering from injury, as well as Odean Smith and Shai Hope come into the playing eleven in place of Johnson Charles, Roston Chase and Alzarri Joseph.
“Looks like a very good surface, we want to put up some runs on the board and try to defend it. I think it is an opportunity for us to win a series against a big team like India and the boys are excited about it,” he said.
India captain Hardik Pandya said he would have liked to bat first as well while adding that the visitors are unchanged from their last game in Guyana.

Georgetown, Aug 9 (Ians) After Suryakumar Yadav smashed a 44-ball 83 with shots all over the park to hand India a seven-wicket victory over West Indies in the third T20I, young left-handed batter Tilak Varma revealed that he had the urge to go for big shots on seeing the right-hander produce some scintillating strokeplay going for boundaries.
Suryakumar, the top-ranked T20I batter, hit ten fours and four sixes in his whirlwind knock, while stitching an 87-run match-winning partnership with Varma, who remained not out on 49, as India kept the five-game series alive.

New Delhi, Aug 9 (Ians) Amidst the applause directed towards Suryakumar Yadav for victory, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has highlighted the significant role played by Kuldeep Yadav in the third T20 against the West Indies.

New Delhi, Aug 6 (Ians) When Rahul Dravid took over as India’s head coach, he was seen as a ‘crisis man’ by fans and experts, who expected him to bail Team India out from all the off-field controversies and also end the Icc titles drought. However, his tenure as a coach so far has been very disappointing and has invited severe criticism before the upcoming Odi World Cup.
Dravid replaced Ravi Shastri as India’s head coach after a successful stint as the head of cricket at Nca, where he oversaw a successful India U-19 and A tour programme. He was initially hesitant to take on a coaching role with the senior team full of stars, but he was convinced by Bcci officials and he later accepted the job.

Mumbai, Aug 6 (Ians) With the recent experimentation by the team management with the Indian playing XI giving mixed results, the senior national cricket selectors will be in a fix when they sit down to finalise the squad for the Asia Cup 2023 and the Asian Games which follow it, which will be important stops on the journey to the Odi World Cup to be held later in the year.
The Icc Odi World Cup in October-November in India follows on the heels of the Asia Cup 2023, which will be held from August 30 to September 17 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and the Asian Games in Hangzhou from September 23-October 8. It is apparent that the selectors will be left with little time to settle on their World Cup squad.

Bridgetown (Barbados), July 30 (Ians) India head coach Rahul Dravid has defended the decision to experiment excessively with the team combination in the ongoing Odi series against West Indies and the call to rest skipper Rohit Sharma and fellow experienced batter Virat Kohli in the second match, which visitors lost at the Kensington Oval, here on Saturday.
After rejigging their batting line-up in the first Odi, India continued their experimentation as they rested Rohit and Kohli for the second Odi and the move backfired as the Caribbean team cruised to a six-wicket triumph that squared the series at 1-1 on Saturday.
However, Dravid isn’t too concerned with the results and explained the selection decision, saying that it was important to get a look at fringe players like Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup and Icc Men’s Cricket World Cup later this year.

Electronic music isn't exactly the soundtrack you'd expect for a film set in rural Mongolia, but this juxtaposition is part of the wider purpose of Qiao Sixue's debut feature “The Cord of Life”. Starring musicians and performers, this is a work about two different worlds becoming closer, in a film, and country, that can't escape their landscape.
The Cord of Life is screening at New York Asian Film Festival
Alus (Yider) is an electronic musician living in Beijing. Receiving an unusual call from his mother (Badma), he returns to his brother's (Surya) home where she now lives. Learning of her increasing dementia, he decides to take her back to the home where he grew up on the steppes. But he's bitten off more than he can chew, her condition seeing her often run off and getting lost. Local Tama (Nahia), therefore, becomes indispensable for Alus, as he tries to get by and make some music.

Kollywood Prarthana Theatre, India’s first drive-in theatre, is set to be demolished to make way for ultra-luxury villas.Courtesy/AjaySrinivasanTwitterPrarthana drive-in theatre has been a long cherished landmark in Chennai, and it has a significant heritage of being India’s first such endeavour. With the theatre now shut down and set to be demolished to make way for ultra-luxury villas, Chennaites recall their experiences of watching movies there as the city says its farewell to the iconic cinema hall. Crackling and unpredictable speakers, children stargazing while the adults watch films, heavy competition from corporate-run multiplexes, dearly held memories with a parent who has since passed away – Prarthana Drive-in Theatre has seen it all ever since its doors first opened to the public in 1991. The theatre had the advantage of being situated near the city’s beach at Injambakkam on the East Coast Road, adding another layer of charm and wonder for movie-goers.

Venkata Chalapathy In ‘Virupaksha,’ Explained: Was He A Black Magician? How Were His Powers Misused?
Virupaksha began with Venkata Chalapathy being killed by a mob of villagers because they assumed the worst. They believed this person was behind all the mysterious children’s deaths. Venkata died chanting prayers; he and his wife were sadly charred to death. Virupaksha gave the audience a peek into fantasy horror fiction and created an atmosphere of rumors and deceit that led to a revenge plan being concocted, not by any ghost but by the village’s very own Nandini, the daughter of the Sarpanch.
The name Venkata Chalapathy appeared for the first time in the movie when the doctor revealed that 11 years ago, similar strange events had occurred that had mysteriously killed children. This time around, it was the adults who were targeted. When Surya is informed of the death of Venkata Chalapathy, he is keen to know what exactly transpired that led to his death. The commercial cinema space in the Telugu language is littered with supernatural horror and fantasy stories of varying quality. One can either really enjoy them for the entertainment or detest them for making a film just for the heck of it. I’m not sure which category Virupaksha comes under. Directed by Kartik Varma Dandu, Virupaksha is a sad attempt at reigniting the supernatural fantasy genre. Why can’t Telugu cinema make an engaging story in this genre that would not leave anyone wanting to walk out of the theater? This commercial movie is about a supernatural entity that has discreetly taken over a small village and starts creating havoc by killing the adults one by one. How will this entity be caught and destroyed?

Mumbai, April 23 (Ians) Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher rued his team’s bowling in the last five overs which allowed Punjab Kings to smash a whopping 96 runs and score a match-winning 214/8 in a high-scoring Ipl 2023 match at the Wankhede Stadium.
Though Mumbai had fifties from Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav apart from a fine 44 by captain Rohit Sharma, they fell short by 13 runs as Punjab took their points in the ten-team table to eight.
“We were in control until the 15th over and then they got 96 runs in the last five (overs). That is some hitting. We got it wrong, and it is frustrating because we dominated and when we did lose, we lost it incredibly big. We can put a finger on why we lost.”
“We batted well but they (Punjab Kings) did get too many runs, which is disappointing because we controlled half per cent of the game.

ReviewWhile making a commentary against superstition and ignorance, ‘Virupaksha’ is also not entirely supportive of science and reason, which is where it falls short of being a great film. India has a dubious distinction of lynching people to death, and committing atrocious crimes against people on the mere suspicion of practising withcraft or black magic. In this backdrop, writer and director Karthik Dandu’s Virupaksha seemingly makes a commentary against these prejudices and superstitious beliefs, which stem from ignorance. Sai Dharam Tej (playing Surya) and Samyuktha (as Nandini) appear in the lead roles in the film. Virupaksha’s story takes place around the early 1990s. In Rudravanam, a small Telugu village cut off from the rest of the world, a series of mysterious deaths occur. The suspicious deaths lead to strict impositions by the village’s priest. While these deaths seem to be triggered by the involvement of an outsider seeking revenge,...

Hyderabad, April 18 (Ians) Cameron Green’s unbeaten 68 off 40 along with Tilak Verma’s 37-run cameo off 17 balls guided Mumbai Indians to 192/5 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (Ipl) match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Tuesday.
Put in to bat first, Mumbai Indians had a modest start as they scored 53/1 in the Power-play. After two tight overs, Rohit Sharma hit a hat-trick of fours to Washington Sundar to accelerate the innings. In the process, the Mi skipper completed 6000 runs in the Ipl before falling in the fifth over off the bowling of Marco Jansen.
Ishan Kishan then smashed a brilliant six off the penultimate ball of the sixth over. On the next delivery, he went for another six to deep mid-wicket. He got enough height but not the desired distance on it. The fielder dived in to get his hand to it but the ball didn’t stick and Ishan survived.

Delhi had a productive power-play with 51/1, till they ran into Chawla on a dry pitch having some bit of turn for the spinners. After giving eight runs in his first over, Chawla took out Manish Pandey, Rovman Powell and Lalit Yadav to end up with 3/22 in an uninterrupted spell for Mumbai’s lead spinner.

Mumbai, April 7 (Ians) Mumbai Indians would have hoped to have started their campaign in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (Ipl) on a better note than the massive eight-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore in an away match.

New Delhi, April 7 (Ians) Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feels India should back Suryakumar Yadav ahead of the Odi World Cup to be held at home in October-November, saying the right-handed batter is a kind of a player who can win the side a major event like the World Cup.
In India’s last Odi assignment in March before Ipl 2023 began, Suryakumar was dismissed for a hat-trick of golden ducks as Australia won the three-game series 2-1. He has scored 172 Odi runs at an average of just 12.28 since his last Odi half-century in February 2022.
“Everyone in their career goes through something like that. I mean, I’m not sure I have seen it before where someone’s got three first-ball ducks in a row in an entire series. But look, we’ve all been there. You have your ups and downs as international players.”
“His previous 12 or 18 months have been absolutely outstanding.

New Delhi, March 24 (Ians) Veteran India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Friday defended the move to promote Axar Patel ahead of Suryakumar Yadav in the sides 21-run loss in the third Odi match against Australia, saying that the strategy would have worked if Axar had negated spin duo of Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar.
Chasing 270, Axar was promoted to number five while Suryakumar was kept at number seven. The move didn’t work as Axar was run out by a brilliant throw from Steve Smith while Suryakumar was clean bowled by Agar for a golden duck for the third time in the series.
“Why did they promote Axar? If they promoted Axar and he negated Zampa and Agar by taking them for 35 or 50 runs in 10 overs then the game was in India’s bag. So the intent was right but the run-out happened. The outcome wasn’t right,” Ashwin said in...

ReviewLokesh manages to weave in a lot of diversity among the characters – that of gender, class, caste, disability, religion – and not in a ‘tick-all-the-boxes’ way. N4 / ScreengrabLokesh Kumar’s N4 is set in Kasimedu, a hamlet in North Chennai that’s a major hub for fishing in the city. Appropriately, the film opens with a title song that captures life in the area, with visuals of beautiful silver fish being sold in the bustling market. What’s immediately arresting about the casting – at least to me – is the dusky skinned women actors playing the lead. How rare is it to see that in mainstream Tamil cinema, where the usual practice is to either cast pale-skinned women or brownface them in an attempt to make them suit a role. Vinusha Devi and Gabriella Sellus play Abhinaya and Soundarya, sisters in an unconventional family that has come together through a tragedy. They...

A tense, state-of-the-nation drama set in Covid-era India successfully exposes how the caste system underpins much of the country’s division and strife
‘No one ever plans for the poor,” says a young police officer in this tense, painful pandemic drama from India. Shot in black and white, it’s set at the start of the government-imposed lockdown in May 2020 that led to the exodus of 10 million migrant workers from India’s cities. The police officer has been put in charge of a rural roadblock to stop poor workers returning to their families and villages – preventing the spread of the virus. But realising that no help is arriving, the crowd, feeling hungry and abandoned, get angry. The results are explosive, exposing the fault lines of caste prejudice and class conflict.

Bheed
Directed by Anubhav Sinha
For my time and attention, Anubhav Sinha is the finest contemporary filmmaker of Hindi cinema. He makes the films that he wants to. Whether the audience participates in his compelling creative process(Mulk, Article 15) or not(Anek) Anubhav is fine with it.
Bheed comes too close to the actual trauma of the Lockdown for comfort. Assuredly this masterpiece on a real palpable immediate chunk of history makes us uncomfortable, as cinema was always supposed to.
But then we decided we wanted our cinema to be a song-and-dance nautanki. Anubhav Sinha, God bless his fearless soul, decided with Mulk to move away from the bheed, no pun intended. Look where he has reached now! Bheed is our own Schindler’s List. And I don’t mean just the black-and-white photography which could have been somewhat gimmicky in lesser hands.
