Race car driving is far more complicated, suspenseful, and potentially heart-stopping than just a bunch of left turns. Formula 1, the international car racing series with the fastest cars still able to be driven on the road, has delivered dynasties, rivalries, chess match tactics and epic overtakes for over 70 years. But, at least in America, the sport has long been a tree falling in the woods with no one there to hear whether or not it makes a sound. Now, each season of F1 is a tree falling in the woods filmed from every angle for the Netflix docuseries “Formula 1: Drive to Survive.”
“We’ve always been aiming to make a show that can transcend the sport, which is not to say that we don’t want existing sports fans to love the show. We absolutely do, but we wanted something that was accessible,” co-executive producer Tom Rogers told IndieWire.

Eyes burning and blood boiling, a rattled Toto Wolff inconceivably loses his cool. Sat in a team principals meeting in Montreal, the German hits the ceiling, in a similar vein to his porpoising Mercedes car that is the only topic of conversation. “If a car ends up in the wall because it’s too stiff or it’s bottoming out…” he barks. “You’re in the s*** and I’m going to come after you.”
Evoking memories of 2021’s title duel, Christian Horner hits back – and hard. “You’ve got a problem, change your f****** car,” the Red Bull boss retorts. Cue bedlam from all angles. It is, unquestionably, absorbing television.
It doesn’t take long for Formula 1: Drive to Survive, edition five, to whet the appetite. Halfway through episode two, in fact. Call it what you like: off the rails. Uncut. Box-office. Wolff’s incredible rant is the content every producer craves.

Abu Dhabi, Nov 18 (Ians) Red Bull driver Max Verstappen outpaced the Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in the second practice at the Yas Marina Circuit here on Friday.
One of eight drivers to sit out first practice for various ‘rookie’ runs, Verstappen quickly got up to speed in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to produce a benchmark time of 1m 25.146s on the soft compound tyre.
Russell finished three-tenths back after encountering traffic in the final sector of his push lap on the red-marked rubber.
Leclerc was another tenth adrift in third, followed closely by first-practice pace-setter Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz.
Alongside Verstappen and Sainz, there were returns to the cockpit for Lando Norris (McLaren), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Nicholas Latifi (Williams), Fernando Alonso (Alpine), Mick Schumacher (Haas) and Zhou Guanyu (Alfa Romeo).

London, Nov 17 (Ians) Mick Schumacher will leave Haas at the end of the season – with his hopes of finding a seat at another team for 2023 looking slim.
In a statement on Thursday Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner said, “I would like to thank Mick Schumacher for his contribution to the team over the past couple of years.”
“Mick’s pedigree in the junior categories was well known and he has continued to grow and develop as a driver in his time with Haas F1 Team – culminating in his first Formula 1 points-scoring successes earlier this season. While choosing to go in separate directions for the future, the entire team wishes Mick well for the next steps in his career path and beyond,” Steiner added.
The German joined Haas for 2021 to race alongside Nikita Mazepin, Schumacher having won the F2 championship the previous year. This year, alongside Kevin Magnussen, Schumacher scored his...

Geneva (Switzerland), Nov 10 (Ians) Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari F2003-ga was sold for 13 million Swiss francs at an auction in Switzerland.
The F2003 was one of the most successful cars ever driven by the German Formula 1 driver, who won five races and the 2003 World Championship with it.
An unknown buyer bought Chassis 229 with a bid on the telephone, surpassing every bid after the price hit 10 million francs within 15 minutes at the Sotheby’s auction in Geneva on Wednesday.
The auction house Sotheby’s, which had estimated that the Ferrari would sell for up to 9.5 million francs, showed the final price as 14.69 million francs including fees and taxes.
The Chassis 229 was given Ferrari’s “Red Book” certification and was restored in 2022 at the firm’s Maranello factory.
Schumacher drove it for the first time on his way to winning the 2003 Spanish Grand Prix, the fifth race of that season.

Mexico City, Oct 29 (Ians) George Russell put Mercedes at the top of the timesheets during second practice as Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out in the Mexico City Grand Prix here on Friday.
But it was Russell who led the way with an early lap time of 1m 19.970s on 2022-spec soft tyres, given that the regular drivers who sat out FP1 were permitted to run their own programme for the first half of the session to help them make up for lost time (Russell having handed his car to Nyck de Vries).
Not long after Russell’s pace-setting effort, Leclerc lost control of his Ferrari at the entry to the high-speed Turn 7 and dramatically slid backwards into the barriers on the outside of Turn 8, inflicting significant damage on the car’s rear end and bringing out the red flags.
With Leclerc unharmed, his car cleared away and the barriers repaired,...

Formula 1: Leclerc takes pole position for the Italian Gp as Verstappen, Sainz suffer grid penalties
Monza (Italy), Sep 10 (Ians) Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc surged to the pole position for the 2022 Italian Grand Prix in a qualifying programme marked by a number of grid penalties that saw defending champion Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz dropped down the grid for various transgressions.
With the Red Bull driver duo of Verstappen and Sainz dropping down the order due to grid penalties as Mercedes’ George Russell jumped to the front of the row.
Leclerc’s time of 1m 20.161s put him on pole by 0.145s over Red Bull’s Verstappen, while Sainz was 0.268s off his teammate in P3. Verstappen has a five-place penalty, however, while Sainz will drop to 18th. While Sergio Perez qualified fourth for Red Bull, he will drop 10 places — with fifth-place qualifier Lewis Hamilton dropped to the back row alongside Yuki Tsunoda.

Monza (Italy), Sep 9 (Ians) Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz topped the second practice session of Italian Grand Prix, beating Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by a little over a tenth of a second as more drivers joined to incur grid penalties for Sunday’s race.
It had already been confirmed that Verstappen, Sainz and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton would take grid penalties for Pu element changes but race officials later revealed that Sergio Perez in the other Red Bull, Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas and AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda will also make component changes and incur penalties.
At the start of the late afternoon session Sainz bolted to the top of the order with a medium-tyre lap of 1:23.156. Verstappen then took over in P1 with a lap of 1:23.021, also on the mediums. Zandvoort (the Netherlands), Sep 4 (Ians) Red Bull driver and defending champion Max Verstappen won the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix dramatically, quelling a strong late showing by the Mercedes’ George Russell and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari on Sunday.
With the virtual Safety Car in force, Verstappen took a second pit stop on lap 48 with Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes in the second position and Russell third. However, Hamilton’s hopes were dashed as the Safety Car was deployed on lap 55.
The seven-time champion stayed out on mediums to inherit the lead while Verstappen came in for soft tyres, followed by Russell and Leclerc, for the restart on Lap 61. In that restart, Verstappen swept past the Mercedes for the lead, with Russell and Leclerc following suit to pry Hamilton away from the podium.

Zandvoort (Netherlands), Sep 3 (Ians) Reigning World Drivers’ Champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull took pole position for the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix, with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc missing out by 0.021s in a thrilling contest at the Zandvoort circuit.
Verstappen logged a lap of 1m 10.342s in Q3 just before teammate Sergio Perez, fifth, spun at Turn 13 to bring out a yellow flag and prevent anyone else from beating the Dutchman’s time.
“Unbelievable. Today we had a quick race car again. A qualifying lap around here is insane,” Verstappen said after the qualifying session.
Leclerc ended up 0.021s off the home favourite in P2, while Q2 leader Carlos Sainz qualified P3 – under a tenth off pole.
Former Champion Lewis Hamilton qualified on the second row in P4, the Mercedes driver unable to improve late in Q3, while teammate George Russell settled for sixth behind Perez.

Berlin, Aug 31 (Ians) Alpine driver Esteban Ocon has said he would like to have Mick Schumacher as a team-mate in the next Formula One season.
Schumacher’s future at Haas is unclear and Alpine could have a vacancy as Fernando Alonso is moving on to Aston Martin, reports Dpa. Alpine said that Oscar Piastri would take Alonso’s place but the Australian said he will not drive for them amid McLaren speculation, with the case now being decided by the F1 contract review board.
“I told the team leadership I would preferably like to drive with Mick Schumacher. We are friends, I rate him very highly,” Ocon said ahead of the weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix.
“As far as I know he hasn’t signed anything for 2023. So I told my people: let us get Mick.”

Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Aug 28 (Ians) Defending champion Max Verstappen extended his lead atop the Formula 1 driver’s championship by cruising to victory in the Belgian Grand Prix here as teammate Sergio Perez completed a 1-2 for Red Bull on Sunday.

Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Aug 27 (Ians) Max Verstappen was in a league of his own in second practice for the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix on Friday but like his main rival Charles Leclerc will start the race from the back of the grid.
Red Bull driver Verstappen and Ferrari’s Leclerc are among six drivers who have had changes of their power unit components beyond the legal season limit — seemingly choosing the Belgian race because overtaking is easier there than at other grands prix, reports Dpa. The Sunday grid will be fully determined after Saturday’s qualifying, with McLaren’s Lando Norris, Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, Haas driver Mick Schumacher and Valtteri Bottas of Alfa Romeo the other four to move to the back.
That could open the door for the other Red Bull and Ferrari drivers Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz, respectively, to battle for victory in the first race after a four-week summer break.

Monte Carlo, May 20 (Ians) Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were the unlikely names atop the timesheets in practice for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix as Ferrari found pace which has so far been missing this season.
Monaco native Leclerc posted a quickest 1 minute 11.684 seconds around the 3.337 km circuit on his home streets in the second session having barely ran in the first due to an engine problem, Dpa reported.
Sainz was 11 hundredths of a second behind while in the battle of the title contenders Lewis Hamilton put his Mercedes third, fractionally ahead of Max Verstappen's Red Bull.
Formula One was returning to the Principality after the 2020 race was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Bahrain, Dec 6 (Ians) India's Jehan Daruvala on Sunday recorded his first Formula 2 victory after winning the Sakhir Grand Prix sprint race as Mick Schumacher won the 2020 championship despite finishing 18th.
Daruvala, 22, had a good launch from second on the grid and was up alongside pole sitter Daniel Ticktum. Tictum squeezed Daruvala on the inside which allowed championship leader Schumacher to go around the outside of both of them.
Eventually, Ticktum emerged in the lead, followed by Schumacher and Daruvala in third. A few corners later, Daruvala made a good move to pass Schumacher and get into second.
The pair battled for a few laps for the position with Daruvala going back to third and passed Schumacher again a few laps later to regain the position.
He eventually managed to put distance on the German, who will race in Formula 1 for Haas next season, and caught the race leader.
