New Delhi, July 30 (Ians) External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday said that critical and emerging technologies (CETs) are going to emerge as important metrics of power.Addressing the SemiconIndia conference virtually, Jaishankar said, “It is not surprising that CETs should now emerge as one of the important metrics of power. Who invents, who manufactures, what are the market shares, where are the resources, who has the skills, where is the talent pool — these are increasingly the crucial questions.”
He noted: “The depiction of a Chip War may be somewhat overstated, but it has more than a fundamental kernel of truth. To a considerable extent, concerns in the Cet field are influenced by how market shares and production dominance was leveraged in other areas”.
The external affairs minister said that technology trade is not just trade, it is as much as about political science.

KollywoodThe veteran actor, who passed away in 2008, would have been 100 if he were alive today.CV AravindThe man who personified villainy on the silver screen, Mn Nambiar, who passed away in 2008, would have been 100 if he were alive today. The veteran of over a thousand films, most of them in Tamil though his mother tongue like his good friend and illustrious contemporary Mg Ramachandran was Malayalam, spent over seven decades donning the greasepaint, proving his versatility time and again. Nambiar rose from humble beginnings and earned his first salary, a princely Rs 3, for his stage appearance in Nawab Rajamanickam Pillai’s Boys Company. He picked up his first lessons in acting from his theatre gurus before debuting in films as a comedian in Bhaktha Ramadoss in 1935. No one could have visualised then that this shy, slim, self-effacing lad would scorch the screen as a fearsome villain in the days to come.

KollywoodThe film begins with ‘Agila Ulaga Superstar’ Shiva’s voice-over and this is the only portion during the entire film that sounds mildly funny. Anjana ShekarCharlie Chaplin starring actors Prabhu Deva and Prabhu that released in 2002 became so popular that it was remade in Hindi, Telugu, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada and Bengali! Actor Prabhu, in fact, won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award Special Prize for his performance in this film. Can the same be said for Charlie Chaplin 2 that has just released? Not in a million years! Besides, it was not as though the 2002 film was a particularly great one either. Charlie Chaplin was inspired from the 1975 Tamil film Yarukku Maappillai Yaro, directed by Sp Muthuraman and starring Jaishankar, Jayachitra, Sreekanth and Fatafat Jayalaxmi. The plot-line of both the films revolved around a lying husband and his suspicious wife. In Charlie Chaplin, Prabhu and actor Abhirami played the husband and wife roles respectively.

DeathHe was 88.Tnm StaffTwitterFilmmaker and producer Muktha Srinivasan passed away on May 29 in Chennai. He was 88. His first film Mudhalali, which was released in 1958, won the National Award. Muktha Srinivasan went on to direct several films with some of Tamil cinema's biggest stars, including Gemini Ganesan, Jayalalithaa, Sivaji Ganesan and later Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. Films such as Thenmazhai, Ninaivil Nindraval, Bommalatam, Aiyiram Poi, Suryagandhi, Anbai Thedi, Nirai Kudam, Imayam and so on are still considered remarkable by fans of Tamil cinema. Notably, Muktha Srinivasan was also the producer of Mani Ratnam's Nayagan, which is considered to be a landmark film in Tamil cinema. However, he had a fall-out with the hero of the film, Kamal Haasan, after the latter wrote an article in The Hindu about how Mani Ratnam had allegedly suffered a heart attack due to the production pressure on him. Muktha wrote a rebuttal to the article in the same newspaper. His film Polladhavan with Rajinikanth was a huge hit and established Rajini further in his career. The film was a remake of the Kannada film Premada Kanike. Muktha Srinivasan was a prominent member of the film industry and had been an influential voice throughout his career. He had received state and central Government awards, and the Kalaimamani and Raja Sandow titles. He was also instrumental in founding the Tamil Film Producer's Council (Tfpc) on Mgr's urging. His last directorial was the 1992 film Brahmachari starring Nizhalgal Ravi and Gauthami. Tributes poured in for the veteran on social media. Muktha Srinivasan is dead. My fav among his movies was the stellar comedy 'Kathanayagan' with Pandiarajan and S Ve Shekar. He made so many successful movies with second rung stars like Jaishankar, Ssr.
