The World Cup kicks off Nov. 20 in Qatar, and while the event itself is surrounded by geopolitical controversy and intrigue, its TV partners in the U.S. are betting that a confluence of events (Lionel Messi’s last World Cup, the U.S. national team scoring a favorable draw) could not only bolster their bottom lines, but propel soccer fandom in the U.S., with North America set to host the event in 2026.

It’s been four long years, but the FIFA World Cup — the biggest single sporting event on the planet (3.57 billion people watched in 2018) — is ready to hit the pitch again as 32 nations battle it out. For U.S. players, the wait has been even longer, after they didn’t qualify for the last tourney in Russia. “[Now the team has a] responsibility to make us believe again,” says Hall of Famer and Fox Sports’ lead studio analyst Alexi Lalas. The excitement kicks off in Qatar on November 20. The U.S. faces Wales first on November 21 in the group stage; the Black Friday match against England promises to be immense. Leading the U.S. charge is “Captain America”— gifted forward Christian Pulisic. “He has the ideal temperament for that pressure of the world spotlight,” says Fox Sports exec producer David Neal. Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah and Brenden Aaronson are also among the names to watch. While...

Good bad movies are hard to come by, but thank goodness for director David Mahmoudieh’s “See You Soon.” He and co-writer, co-producer and leading lady Jenia Tanaeva have crafted quite possibly the best bad movie of 2019. This stupidly sweet, albeit conventional romantic drama about two downhearted souls falling in love is unabashedly unafraid to embrace fantasy and lean into cheesy, gooey sentimentality. Steamier and sleeker than a Hallmark Channel movie, but with just as many idealized scenarios, it’s “so bad, it’s good” escapism at its finest.
World-famous U.S. soccer player Ryan Hawkes (Liam McIntyre) is on the verge of taking his team to the World Cup. His hard work and good looks have landed him a high-powered agent (Harvey Keitel), a gorgeous fiancée (Poppy Drayton) and a slew of multi-million-dollar endorsements. He’s an arrogant athlete whose lapse in judgement causes him to drive home drunk and distracted by Instagram.

John Strong is catching hell for his suit. The 2018 Cup will be Fox’s first as the English-language U.S. broadcaster. To illustrate the change, Fox’s PR pros plotted a promotional photo shoot a bit different from what sports broadcasters are used to — with the men in high-end suits and the women in gowns. Most of the team seems into it. Strong doesn’t look unhappy, but he’s probably been more comfortable.

Since Andrey Arshavin shows up exclusively to play well at the Euro and collect a paycheck when a team like Arsenal overpays for him, it’s no surprise that the tiny Russian helped spur his nation to a quick lead over the Czech Republic. Apparently, the consolation prize for not donning the America tights is a rom-com. I reported yesterday that Chris Evans was joining Anna Faris, and now Pajiba sometimer Christopher Campbell reported over at Cinematical that John Krasinski is opting to join the franchise rom-com Something Borrowed. Based on the clit-lit series by Emily Giffin (anyone? anyone?), Ginnifer Goodwin will be playing the lead who steals her best friend's fiance. Krasinski isn't to play the nogudnik altar-leaver-er, but rather Goodwin's best bud in a supporting role.
To date, Krasinski's had to romantically pursue Jenna Fischer, Mandy Moore, Maya Rudolph, and Squishface Zellweger. I didn't think Krasinski had the chops to carry a lead until Away We Go, and this a far fucking cry from that hipsterical sentiment. But apparently Hilary Swank -- who's producing the project -- thinks Halpert's got the diaperin' skills, since the character is slated to play the lead...
