Tom Holland is arguably the most popular star of his contemporaries due to his iconic role as Spider-Man in the MCU. The actor has played the character in various MCU films, including a hugely successful solo trilogy. Holland has also stepped out of blockbuster franchises and dabbled into various dramatic films that displayed his range as an actor.
Tom Holland as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home
One of them was the 2017 medieval drama film Pilgrimage. Holland starred opposite fellow Marvel star Jon Bernthal. During one of the intense scenes in the film, Holland wanted to go full method and requested Bernthal to rough him up. This resulted in a surprising twist of events that helped him later during the shoot.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for "The Cellar." Proceed with caution.
"The Cellar" is a slow-burn horror movie. It's more about what's coming than what's happening. When the third act arrives in Brendan Muldowney's ("Pilgrimage") horror film, the story takes a sharp turn into the supernatural and features a rather impressive practical creature. Initially, however, things were meant to get a whole lot weirder for the film's central family that moves into the wrong house.
There were more creatures, for starters. Funny enough, the one creature that does arrive to shake things up? Crew members considered it a letdown on the set. During a...

Elisha Cuthbert's horror movies are well-known among horror fans. Now, she's got a distinct trio of horror titles on her resume with "Captivity," "House of Wax," and now, "The Cellar." All different styles of horror movies, all different performances. However, those three movies share one key similarity for Cuthbert: "You can't hold back when you're doing horror."
Brendan Muldowney's "The Cellar" is more subdued, as the actress put it, but there's still notes of fear, regret, and paranoia to play in the old-school haunted house story. Even though Cuthbert doesn't make a lot of horror movies, when she does, she wants to give it...

Dylan Fitzmaurice Brady and Elisha Cuthbert in The Cellar
If you read a lot my work here at Eye For Film, you’ll know that I have ongoing concerns about people moving house in horror films. It’s almost never a good idea, and it doesn’t work out well for the characters in Brendan Muldowney’s The Cellar, who also need lessons in not going into dark places on their own, not playing mysterious old gramophone records and not discounting mysterious symbols in their new home as decorative quirks. If this sounds like pure cliché, however, you’ll be surprised by how scary it is. The film didn’t make it into Glasgow Frightfest for nothing. It subsequently enjoyed a cinema run and it’s now opening on Shudder, so Brendan and I connected and I asked him about his aims when it came to making tropes which feel familiar frightening again.

After a lengthy hiatus, it’s great to finally see Elisha Cuthbert return back to the horror genre, taking the starring role in Brendan Muldowney’s The Cellar. To mark the film’s launch, on the horror fan-favourite platform Shudder, we had the pleasure in speaking to the Canadian actress, as she talks about her return to the genre, and what it was about this specific project that drew her back in.
She also talks about her character and whether she ever adopts traits from those she embodies. She talks about her experience shooting in Ireland, eating Tayto’s crisps, and looks ahead to her next project, the incredible true story of Bandit, where she stars alongside Josh Duhamel and Mel Gibson.

Keira (Elisha Cuthbert) and Brian Woods (Eoin Macken) are masters at their craft. Their marketing firm has gone viral with campaigns that infiltrate the psychology of their audiences in ways few can—at least that’s what we’re supposed to glean from a crucial pitch (depicted with hollowly superficial ad-speak tropes) that will apparently “make or break” the company despite the couple having just moved their family to a giant Irish mansion on a whim. That last part doesn’t really scream “we’re one client away from bankruptcy,” does it? Writer-director Brendan Muldowney hopes we won’t look that closely, though. Their job and this sudden move are only meant to set up the horror to come courtesy an alchemy hotspot that serves as a mysterious gateway to Hell.
Welcome to The Cellar, a film full of thought-provoking ideas that never quite gel into anything more than another example of missed potential.

Last month, we brought you the first part of our interview for The Cellar (you can read it Here), featuring writer/director Brendan Muldowney and co-stars Elisha Cuthbert and Eoin Macken, and now that the film is set to arrive in theaters and on Shudder this Friday, April 15th, we thought that this was the perfect time to bring you the second part of our discussion with the trio. In this part of our interview, they discussed The Cellar’s spooky location and how integral it became to the film, their experiences coming together during Covid to make this project, and what their biggest takeaways have been from working on The Cellar as well.
I love this location because it does feel like it's another character in this story, and whenever a movie can effectively pull that off, I'm such a fan of that. Brendan, can you talk about finding that location?...

Not a nadir in recent horror cinema, but well below average — and sea level — “The Cellar” is a logy contraption whose basic elements seem all too obviously determined by international co-production requirements, rather than any internal logic. Toplining scream queen Elisha Cuthbert as a mother who unwittingly moves her family into a house of supernatural peril, this West Ireland-shot thriller, made in conjunction with Belgian interests, is technically polished. But writer-director Brendan Muldowney’s latest lacks the thick atmospherics that might have punched across a sketchy screenplay, which falls short in expanding the premise of his 2004 short “The Ten Steps.” Rlje Films is releasing this SXSW premiere to North American theaters on April 15, simultaneous with its streaming launch on Shudder.
Muldowney’s ten-minute short is basically recycled as a first act here, with a tad more setup. Married advertising professionals Keira (Cuthbert) and Brian (Eoin Macken) have moved to a...

This past weekend, writer/director Brendan Muldowney celebrated the world premiere of his latest feature film project, The Cellar, at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival. Co-starring Elisha Cuthbert and Eoin Macken, The Cellar is centered around the Woods family as they move into a mysterious new home so that parents Keira (Cuthbert) and Brian (Macken) can be closer to their work. Their kids aren’t entirely thrilled about the new housing arrangement, but after the Woods’ teenage daughter, Ellie (Abby Fitz), goes missing after going into their new abode’s cellar, Keira is bound and determined to bring back her child by any means necessary.

"There's symbols above all the doors!" Shudder has debuted the official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled The Cellar, made by Irish filmmaker Brendan Muldowney. This one recently premiered at the 2022 FrightFest Glasgow, and is also showing at SXSW this month before opening in April. In The Cellar, Keira's daughter mysteriously vanishes in the cellar of their new house. After a number of terrifying supernatural experiences she comes to the conclusion that the house took Ellie. She discovers that a physicist & occultist, who was obsessed with finding the 11th dimension, built the house and engraved sinister equations on the 10 steps leading into the cellar. Finally, Keira must battle with the universe's most ancient evil, or lose her family's souls forever. Starring Elisha Cuthbert, Eoin Macken, Abby Fitz, and Dylan Fitzmaurice-Brady. This looks like it has the potential to be quite scary, with some epic horror creeping in this house.

Exclusive: Irish filmmaker Alexandra McGuinness (She’s Missing) has set the film Lucia, about James Joyce’s daughter of the same name, as her next project, with Esme Creed-Miles (Amazon’s Hanna) signing on to star.
Lucia is billed as a dance drama with genre elements, with the story beginning in 1932 Paris. Lucia Joyce (Creed-Miles) is a brilliant modern dancer but lives in the shadow of her famous father, James Joyce. Determined to be recognized as an artist and person in her own right, she sets out to create the greatest and most original dance in the world. But can she do so without losing her mind?
McGuiness and her frequent collaborator Antonia Campbell-Hughes wrote the script. Conor Barry is producing for Savage Productions, with John Lang for Super Bloom Films. Screen Island provided development financing, with the Creative Europe Programme – Media of the European Union offering additional support, and Des Hamilton handling casting.
Lucia is McGuinness’ third feature film. She previously directed She’s Missing, starring Eiza González, Josh Hartnett and Lucy Fry, which was released in 2019, and Lotus Eaters, starring Campbell-Hughes and Johnny Flynn, which premiered at Tribeca in 2011.
Miles is an English actress best known for her portrayal of the title character in Amazon’s Hanna, who will next feature in Travis Beacham’s podcast series Impact Winter and Amazon’s animated series, The Legend of Vox Machina.
Barry has two films premiering at SXSW: Campbell-Hughes’ directorial debut It Is In Us All, starring Cosmo Jarvis, and Brendan Muldowney’s horror pic The Cellar. Lang’s most recent producorial effort, Spree, directed by Eugene Kotlyarenko and starring Joe Keery, premiered at Sundance in 2020.
McGuinness is represented by Neon Kite and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller; Creed-Miles by Conway van Gelder Grant (UK), WME and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern; and Campbell-Hughes by United Agents (UK) and attorneys Jodi Peikoff and Michael H. Mahan.

There are well crafted horror films out there and there are schlocky ones. There are ones which work hard to present new ideas and ones which focus on character instead. Every now and again one comes along which, no matter where else it might sit on the spectrum, is just terrifying. The Cellar is such a film.

Brendan Muldowney's "The Cellar" is an adventurously melancholic representation of Irish horror much like Corin Hardy's "The Hallow" or Lee Cronin's "The Hole in the Ground." On paper — and briefly, in practice — there's nothing exceptional about another spooky manor playing host to a new family's gravest fears. Muldowney ushers audiences into another musty residence we've seen decoratively tweaked a thousand times, until mythology and ambitions extrapolate further and grander like the films mentioned above. A haunted house becomes a puzzle of Hebrew glyphs, summoning spells, and far more than bumps in the night called upon by every indie horror director hoping for...

I have a very strong aversion to basements or cellars. Look at any movie or series with a plot point revolving around a room under a house and it won’t end well for the poor soul who ventures down there. Based on my fear of what might be lurking under the house, any movie that features a dark cellar is almost guaranteed to creep me out.

If death and taxes are the only two sure things in life, haunted house movies dominating the horror genre year-on-year might as well be the third. From gothic manors to crumbling council flats, it feels like every damned dwelling in the Western world has been given the Amityville treatment by this point. And while most are cut from the same, alarmingly similar, cloth, there’s usually at the very least, a fair bit of fun to be had in the surface-level differences. Fun which smartly-dressed Irish chiller The Cellar certainly looks to double down on, albeit at the cost of any real narrative foundations.

Hello, dear readers! On Friday, March 11th, the 2022 SXSW Film Festival will be kicking off, and Daily Dead will be on the ground in Austin to check out all of this year’s genre projects. To give you a sense of all the horror and sci-fi awesomeness that will be playing during this year’s fest, I’ve put together this rundown of all the great genre (as well as a few genre-adjacent) offerings that will be featured over the next week or so at SXSW 2022. What’s even better is that for a few of these films (like Ti West’s X), you won’t have to wait long to see them if you aren’t able to check out the fest’s lineup yourself, so definitely make sure to keep an eye out for these films when they are released in the coming months.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Moody, atmospheric, even beautiful in its grimness; a medieval adventure unlike any we’ve seen before, with a sharp attention to psychological and moral realism. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
New Spider-Man Tom Holland stars in an action-adventure with Richard Armitage — of The Hobbit and Hannibal fame, for starters — and Jon Bernthal, who’s in this summer’s hip hit Baby Driver and is about to debut as Marvel’s The Punisher on Netflix. This seems like a no-brainer to market to Hollywood’s supposed core audience of teen boys and young men, so how is it possible that Pilgrimage debuted almost unheralded in a few cinemas in the Us with a simultaneous VOD release, and went straight to the DVD in the UK?
About to get medieval on someone…...

"A powerful man does not become so without sin." Rlj Entertainment has unveiled a second trailer for the indie action thriller Pilgrimage, set in Ireland during the 13th century. The story follows a group of monks who must escort a sacred relic across the "Irish landscape fraught with peril". Starring Richard Armitage, Tom Holland, John Lynch, Stanley Weber, Lochlann O'Mearáin, Hugh O'Conor, Eric Godon, plus the badass Jon Bernthal as a character named "The Mute". We already posted the first official trailer for this earlier in the year, but I'm glad to see another one reminding us that this is finally coming out soon. They're obviously playing up Tom Holland from Spider-Man: Homecoming, but the entire cast looks great. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Brendan Muldowney's Pilgrimage, direct from YouTube: You can still watch the first official trailer for Pilgrimage here, to see even more footage from this film.

Here’s an exclusive clip from Pilgrimage starring Spider-man: Homecoming’s Tom Holland The Hobbit and Spooks star Richard Armitage, and a powerful, mute performance from Jon Bernthal of The Walking Dead fame.
Pilgrimage is directed by Brendan Muldowney with a script from Jamie Hannigan and debuted at the Tribecca Film Festival earlier this year. As you’ll see form the clip embedded below alongside a selection of images, the movie is somewhat different to the New York skyscapers that we’ll see Holland swinging from in Spider-man: Homecoming which is set for release next week (keep your eyes peeled for our interviews with the Spidey filmmakers and cast).
Sadly we’ve had to remove the clip but here’s the trailer for your viewing pleasure
Pilgrimage is launched on Download, Blu-ray and DVD 3rd July.
