In 1993, Studio Ghibli made an animated film called Ocean Waves, which has also gone by the title I Can Hear the Sea. The film was never officially released in the U.S., but GKids is about to change that. They've restored in the film in 4K and will be giving it a limited release in the U.S. later this month.
I've actually never seen this film, so I'm kind of excited about the opportunity to see a Studio Ghibli film for the first time. The story center on two friends who both end up falling for the same girl who is new to their high school. Here's a brief synopsis:
As a young man returns home after his first year away at college he recalls his senior year of high school and the iron-willed, big city girl that turned his world upside down.
The film was directed by Tomomi Mochizuki...

A Studio Ghibli gem is finally making its way to Us theaters this month. Rarely seen outside of Japan, “Ocean Waves” is an animated film that tells the story of adolescent and teenage isolation.
Adapted from Saeko Himuro’s novel of the same name, the feature was originally made in 1993 for Japanese television, and now Gkids will distribute the movie to select theaters in a 4k restoration.
The story follows two best friends, Taku and Yutaka, who head back to school to what they believe will be another uneventful year. Per the synopsis, “Their friendship is tested by the arrival of Rikako, a beautiful new transfer student from Tokyo whose attitude vacillates wildly from flirty and flippant to melancholic. When Taku joins Rikako on a trip to Tokyo, the school erupts with rumors, and the three friends are forced to come to terms with their changing relationships.”

Hayao Miyazaki is returning to feature-length animated filmmaking and the stellar animation The Red Turtle will get a wider release early next year, but it’s not the only treat from Studio Ghibli that we’ll be receiving soon. After last year kicked off with a U.S. release of Only Yesterday, an unearthed and restored classic from the studio, another widely unseen gem (at least here) will be making its way to theaters.
Tomomi Mochizuki‘s 1993 drama Ocean Waves has been given a new 4K restoration and it’ll be arriving in theaters at the end of the month. Marking the first time a Studio Ghibli film was directed by someone other than studio founders Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, the adaptation of Saeko Himuro‘s book follows friends who relationship is tested when a new woman enters their lives.
Ahead of a release on December 28th at IFC Center in New York,...
