Samay, the 9-year-old spitfire at the center of Last Film Show, is a pintsize wheeler-dealer, a wily old soul and a bit of a mechanical genius. As in another recently arrived film, The Fabelmans, this young protagonist’s obsession with the big screen begins with a family trip to the local theater (Spielberg’s name is one of many in the pantheon that writer-director Pan Nalin invokes at the beginning and end of his feature). But for rural kid Samay, owning his very own camera is not an option as it is for suburbanite Sammy Fabelman. With impressive ingenuity, he finds another way to make movies.
Set in 2010, as the art of 35mm projection is about to be made obsolete by the advent of digital, India’s official submission to the Academy Awards is a kid’s-eye-view story that never condescends. Alive with movie love,...

Pan Nalin, writer and director of “Last Film Show,” India’s official submission for the Best International Feature Oscar, turned to his own childhood growing in the Adtala village in Saurashtra for inspiration for the semi-autobiographical film.
Centered on 9-year-old Samay (Bhavin Rabari), “Last Film Show” details a summer spent watching films in the projection booth of a rundown movie palace, falling in love with the art of filmmaking and changing the course of his entire life.
Imagine Nalin’s surprise seeing a similar story unfold in another semi-autobiographical awards contender this year, Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans.”

At some point in our lives, whether as small children or as budding young adults, we all have that one movie that not just inspires us, but truly showcases to us the wonder and magic of film. Whether it’s a massive blockbuster or a small indie film, whether it be in front of the biggest screen in the theater or in the comfort of someone’s own home, there will always be that moment when a movie just “gets” someone. There will always be a movie or movies that speak to someone internally, and while not everyone will be inspired to make films of their own, they will always undergo some sort of internal transformation because of their experience with film, and I don’t think anyone understands that better than the lead protagonist of the film, Last Film Show.

Soon after, Samay befriends the projectionist at the cinema and begins to play truant, causing a rift with his overbearing but well-meaning father.

“Last Film Show” (aka “Chhello Show”), India’s Oscar contender, was this weekend named winner of the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles.
Writer-director Pan Nalin and producer Dheer Momaya were presented with the Snow Leopard trophy at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills.
“The best movie encompasses everything we want to see in a great film: good storytelling, moving performances, technically appealing, visually intoxicating and heartfelt connectivity to audiences. We received a line of very good movies this year and it was a tough decision. But this film reminded us of why we loved cinema. It reminded us of cinema’s ability to both enchant and inspire. It is a love letter to cinema to light and to life itself,” said festival jurors Janet Nepales and Pitof Jean-Christophe.
The film has been on the festival circuit for over a year, since debuting in in June 2021 at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Last Film Show (Chhello Show)
Written and Directed by Pan Nalin
Watching this near-flawless fable of a film-fixated boy from a town in Gujarat a second time, I thought of how close the magic of moviemaking and the wondrous appeal of movie viewing are brought in Pan Nalin’s film.
First things first, Chhello Show bears no resemblance to the Italian film Cinema Paradiso, apart from the kinship of cinema and food that grows between our 9-year protagonist Samay (Bhavin Rabari) and the projectionist Fazal (Bhavesh Srimali) of a dilapidated single theatre which has seen better days.
Samay has not seen any better days than these. He has just discovered the magic of cinema in the rickety projection room of Galaxy cinema in a godforsaken backwater town called Chalala. The Gujarati town is sure to acquire a touristic fame after this film.

Indian filmmaker Pan Nalin, whose Gujarati film ‘Chhello Show’ or ‘Last Film Show’ has been sent as India’s official entry for the 95th edition of Academy Awards under the Best International Feature Film category, feels that regional cinema of India gaining prominence at the global level is an indication of India’s progress on the international stage.
Elaborating on the same, the director said: “‘Last Film Show’ or ‘Chhello Show’, as we know it, is one of my greatest achievements. The respect and admiration the movie has amassed across the globe, to the point that it was selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars, warms my heart. The rise of regional cinema is symbolic of India’s leaping progress not just on a national but on a global scale.”
The makers of the film recently released an unseen footage from the film, which is exclusively to stream on IMDb’s website.

Pan Nalin’s newest feature “Last Film Show” is a semi-autobiographical tale about about falling in love with cinema and filmmaking. The movie was shown in and around the director’s native region of Saurashtra in Gujarat and stars boys from the same region. “Last Film Show” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
“Last Film Show” is screening at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles
9-year-old Samay (Bhavin Rabari) lives in the small town of Chalala in Gujarat. His hometown is nothing more than a place where the train headed for bigger, more populated destinations, stops for a bit. During these stops, the boy helps his Brahmin father (Dipen Raval) sell his tea. The boy’s life looks bleak until the day he discovers cinema. After that, nothing can stop him from going to the cinema house in the big city, even his film-hating conservative father. Having no money to...

In Last Film Show, nine-year-old Samay (guileless newcomer Bhavin Rabari) stares wide-eyed at the screen in his dingy local theater, a whirlwind of magnificent images and Bollywood stars flashing before his eyes — Hrithik Roshan rides in on a horse, his clothes billowing behind him; Shah Rukh Khan stares down a gang of miscreants; Deepika […]

Cinephiles have long been conditioned to roll their eyes at mawkishly uplifting movies about the magic of cinema. The worst of these tend to come from people who can’t find any other way to make the same point, so it’s understandable if the ultra-earnest title card at the start of Pan Nalin’s “Last Film Show” inspires you to put your head between your knees and brace for a long two hours. “Gratitude for illuminating the path…” it reads, followed by a short list of names that consists of the Lumière brothers, Eadweard Muybridge, David Lean, Stanley Kubrick, and Andrei Tarkovsky.
In the moment, that feels like both way too much and not enough. By the end of Nalin’s , however, the decision to open with such a hokey tip of the hat seems entirely justified (and not just because all five of those filmmakers are paid cute...

Samay (Bhavin Rabari) gives his food to projectionist Fazal (Bhavesh Shrimali) in Pan Nalin’s Last Film Show: “Yes, they’re all my mother’s [Hanasa] recipes and they are also local recipes you find in that region. They are all historically vegetarian, and even today.”
When I spoke with Tribeca Film Festival Artistic Director Frédéric Boyer from Paris on the line-up for the 20th anniversary edition, he highly recommended Last Film Show (Chhello Show). Pan Nalin bookends his very personal film with the gratitude he feels to cinema history by naming the Lumière brothers, Eadweard Muybridge, David Lean, Stanley Kubrick and Andrei Tarkovsky before the opening credits and ends with a highly imaginative tribute to the colour palates of filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray, Michelangelo Antonioni, Maya Deren, Jean-Luc Godard, Alfred Hitchcock, Yasujiro Ozu, and Martin Scorsese to name just a few.
