More than a decade ago, Matt Damon first took charge as Jason Bourne for The Bourne Identity in 2002, during a time when MGM’s Bond franchise was beginning to waver financially before the studio eventually drafted in series newcomer Daniel Craig to pick up the license to kill.
In those years that followed, a one-two punch of Supremacy and Ultimatum secured Bourne’s status as one of the best action series of the 21st century, informing many of its genre contemporaries – Bond included – thanks to its blistering editing and smart storytelling. Super Bowl 2016 is little over a week away and already, studios across the industry are aligning their major 2016 blockbusters to be showcased during the sporting event. One of the tentpole releases vying for your attention is Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon’s Bourne 5, and Universal has now slated the first-look trailer to be revealed alongside the Super Bowl on February 7.
At least, that’s according to Eric Van Lustbader, official write behind some of the Bourne novels. "Star Wars: Rogue One" and "Nightcrawler" actor Riz Ahmed has been set to join Matt Damon in the next installment in the Jason Bourne franchise.
Ahmed will play a tech specialist at the CIA and was top choice for the role, but scheduling conflicts with the "Star Wars" spin-off previously seemed to prevent his involvement. Dates have now been worked out.
Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, Scott Shepherd, Julia Stiles and Tommy Lee Jones are also on board the project which Paul Greengrass is attached to direct and co-write with Christopher Rouse.
Greengrass, Damon, Greg Goodman, Frank Marshall, Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner will produce. Production is now under way in Budapest ahead of a July 29th release.
