The story of MTV is set to be rolled out in a new podcast series hosted by former VJ Dave Holmes.
Audacy Podcasts is launching Who Killed the Video Star? The Story of MTV, an eight-part series that launches today, March 27.
“MTV is still on the air in 2024, and it’s still profitable, but my nieces and nephews know it as a logo on an Urban Outfitters t-shirt. I wanted to know what happened, and where the spirit of MTV exists now,” said Holmes.
The series will explore the cultural history, impact, legacy, and phenomenon of MTV and looks at what it turned into.
Holmes, who previously hosted Waiting for Impact, the wild story of boy band Sudden Impact, is hosting with guests including former VJs such as Julie Brown, Damien Fahey, and Kevin Seal, former MTV News correspondents Gideon Yago, Chris Connelly, and Suchin Pak, former Viacom Music and Entertainment Group president Doug Herzog,...

Shortly after Trevor Noah abruptly announced he’d be leaving The Daily Show in late 2022, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios CEO Chris McCarthy knew he needed allies.
There was “a lot of pressure to just choose someone,” he told The Hollywood Reporter early last year, though he resisted naming an immediate replacement. Instead, the team, led by longtime showrunner Jen Flanz, lined up a stable of guest hosts, a mix of bold-faced names like Sarah Silverman and Chelsea Handler as well as correspondents from the show. McCarthy also sought the counsel of James “Babydoll” Dixon, manager of late-night hosts Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel, and a previous Daily Show executive producer himself. In fact, in those early transition months, McCarthy spent “a lot of time with Babydoll getting his advice,” he said, “and we called Jon a couple times.”

The Peabody Awards are looking to (finally) host their first in-person Los Angeles awards ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on June 9.
The organization announced a planned move to Los Angeles (from New York) for its annual awards in early 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic and last year’s writers strike have prevented the organization from holding these events in person.
Peabody also announced that it has appointed seven new members to its board of jurors, including Doug Herzog (formerly the president of Viacom’s Music Entertainment Group), Cynthia López (CEO of New York Women in Film & Television), Orwa Nyrabia (artistic director of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam), Russ Schriefer (founding partner of Strategic Partners & Media), Cynthia Tucker (Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist), Mark Whitaker (former managing editor of CNN Worldwide, Washington bureau chief for NBC News and editor of Newsweek) and Andrea Wishom (president of Skywalker Holdings, LLC) to its board of jurors.

The Peabody Awards are trying again for Los Angeles. The Peabody org announced Thursday that it will hold its 84th annual ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Sunday, June 9. This reps the Peabody Award’s return to an in-person event for the first time since 2019, and also its first time in L.A. — having previously been held in New York (and virtually over the past four years during the pandemic and Hollywood strikes).
Last year was actually supposed to be the Peabody Awards’ move out west and return to an in-person gathering after Covid-19 forced the show to go virtual in 2020, 2021 and 2022. But the Hollywood strikes then forced the group to do another virtual ceremony in 2023.
Also, as part of the announcement, Peabody revealed that Wonya Lucas has been named as the next chair of the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors. And added to its board of jurors are...

Roy Wood Jr. received a lot of attention when he and the rest of The Daily Show crew took the stage at the Emmys following their win in the Outstanding Talk Series category.
As former host Trevor Noah delivered his speech and showed his gratitude for the accolade, Wood was mouthing something in the background that went viral on social media.
“Please hire a host,” Wood said, something he would confirm on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
In a post on X, he wrote, “Chill fam, I was trying to do that in the low.”

January 11, 1999, 25 years ago to the day, was Jon Stewart’s first night hosting The Daily Show.
The comedian took over from Craig Kilborn, who had hosted the Comedy Central show from July 21, 1996. Stewart’s first guest was Michael J. Fox, promoting Spin City.
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart went on to win the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series for ten consecutive years between 2003 and 2012, before losing to The Colbert Report, a show that he exec produced, for a couple of years, and then coming back to win in 2015 in his final season.
It’s a run that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver looked like it might replicate with seven wins in the category – then known as Outstanding Variety Talk Series – starting in 2016.
However, Oliver is now competing on Monday night at the primetime Emmys in a new category, Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, up against Saturday Night Live and A Black Lady Sketch Show,...

Roy Wood Jr. offered more of an explanation Thursday on why he decided to leave The Daily Show.
His exit comes as Comedy Central has yet to name a successor to Trevor Noah, who left in December. At first, Wood told NPR that he wanted time to determine his next steps, as the show has not offered him the job as permanent host.
On Thursday, he expanded on those thoughts via social media accounts by talking about what he’s leaving behind and what he’d like to do next.
“After eight amazing years on The Daily Show, where I’ve been able to purse my comedic and political curiosities with some of the best writers, producers, crew and correspondents anyone could hope for, I’ve decided to move on,” he wrote. “I’m grateful to Trevor Noah, Paramount and especially Comedy Central for giving me the runway to also produce three one-hour stand-up specials,...

This article contains spoilers for the final episode of Malcolm in the Middle.
Besides animated series, there are very few sitcoms which maintain a consistent level of hilarity with every beat of comic timing. No matter what point you turn on Malcolm in the Middle, any episode, something will make you laugh within 18 seconds. I’m not talking giggles or chuckles, but full-out guffaws that make you miss the next six jokes.
Other shows may be more consistent in overall quality, but none match the stream of funny that comes out of the series created by Linwood Boomer, himself the third of four siblings who was placed in the “gifted” class at school. After graduating, Boomer acted on Little House on the Prairie, another show focusing on a middle child. The semi-autobiographical Malcolm in the Middle doesn’t just call for a second look. It screams for a repeat binge.

Dave Sirulnick spent nearly three decades at MTV, helping launch the signature “Week in Rock” news franchise and overseeing “Total Request Live” — as well as reality series including “Laguna Beach,” “Cribs” and “My Super Sweet 16.” He spearheaded MTV’s Video Music Awards, as well as its ground-breaking “Choose or Lose” presidential campaign coverage and news programming stemming from world events such as Hurricane Katrina, the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the 2003 war in Iraq. Sirulnick rose to executive vice president for multiplatform production, news and music for MTV before departing in 2015 as part of a major Viacom reorg. With the news that Paramount Global has eliminated the last vestiges of MTV News (which had already been significantly downsized), Variety asked Sirulnick — now president of entertainment at RadicalMedia — to share his thoughts.

In the late 1980s, a group of grumpy music journalism vets and fresh-faced 20-somethings came together for a radical media experiment: the launch of a cable news division programmed for, and largely run by American youth. On May 9, 2023 — 36 years after its inception — Paramount announced that the fruits of their labor, MTV News, had been shuttered for good.
The Hollywood Reporter reached out to many of MTV News’ star reporters — Kurt Loder, Tabitha Soren, John Norris, Alison Stewart, Chris Connelly, SuChin Pak and Gideon Yago — and visionary executives Doug Herzog and Ocean MacAdams to reminisce about the glory days of the outfit, where one day you might be hanging backstage with Prince in Paris, the next chasing a pre-White House Bill Clinton through the snowy streets of New Hampshire.
For each of them, it was a bittersweet journey they were more than happy to take.

Trevor Noah recently stepped down from “The Daily Show” after seven years as host, hired in 2015 when previous host Jon Stewart decided it was time to exit.
Had things gone another way, however, it would have been John Mulaney who took over for Stewart, as the comedian revealed during a recent appearance on the “Basic!” podcast.
“It was shortly after the ‘SNL’ 40th anniversary,” Mulaney told hosts Doug Herzog and Jen Cheney.

John Mulaney is back on top of the stand-up comedy world following the release of “Baby J,” his new Netflix special that digs into his recent addiction relapse and subsequent return to sobriety. The special has earned rave reviews for the honesty and vulnerability Mulaney displays, with many viewing it as a warning about the dangers of American celebrity culture.
Mulaney’s press tour to promote the special has seen him take a trip down memory lane, recalling his rise to prominence and some of the high profile opportunities that he missed out on over the years. Appearing on Doug Herzog and Jen Chaney’s “Basic” podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), the comedian said that he was considered as a potential host of The Daily Show after Jon Stewart vacated the job in 2015. He explained that the offer came right after his ill-fated multi-camera sitcom “Mulaney” aired on Fox.

“The Daily Show with John Mulaney”? It almost could have happened, at least according to John Mulaney.
Speaking to Doug Herzog and Jen Chaney on their podcast “Basic!” Mulaney revealed he was approached to replace Jon Stewart as “The Daily Show” host back in 2015.

As Mulaney recalled, former Comedy Central boss Kent Alterman broached the subject of stepping in for Stewart.

John Mulaney wishes he would’ve been asked to host The Daily Show five years after he was.
The comedian, whose new special John Mulaney: Baby J is now on Netflix, recently discussed being asked to host the Comedy Central talk show after Jon Stewart left in 2015.

John Mulaney is answering questions about being asked by Comedy Central executives if he was interested in hosting “The Daily Show” when Jon Stewart bowed out in 2015.
During a recent appearance on Doug Herzog and Jen Chaney’s “Basic!” podcast, Herzog — who was president of Viacom Music and Entertainment Group, which oversaw Comedy Central, until 2017 — asked Mulaney if he recalled the conversation he had with then-president of Comedy Central, Kent Alterman, about potentially taking over. “I think we were floating your interest in that and you were very lukewarm as I remember,” Herzog said.
Mulaney explained that he ultimately passed because, in part, his Fox sitcom “Mulaney” had just been canceled after only one season.
“It was shortly after the SNL 40th anniversary. I had a sitcom on Fox. They aired all 13 [episodes] but it was canceled. It didn’t do good numbers,” Mulaney said. “I remember going to dinner with Kent.

Though the breakup of Desus Nice and The Kid Mero — and the end of their Showtime late night series and Bodega Boys podcast — seemingly came out of nowhere, one-half of the duo says it had been in the works for some time.
Mero said in a podcast interview that he and Desus had been “pursuing separate interests” for a year before the July 18 announcement that Desus & Mero was finished at Showtime, leading to heavy speculation about what drove the split.
“Desus and I had a discussion, and we had been pursuing separate interests for over a year before the show came to an end,” Mero (aka Joel Martinez), said on the Basic! podcast hosted by former Comedy Central and MTV executive Doug Herzog and Vulture TV critic Jen Chaney. “That conversation solidified for us in signing overall agreements that recognized our intent to [break out] independent of one another.

Doug Herzog once ran Comedy Central. And MTV. And Spike.
Since leaving his corner office in 2017, he’s parlayed his nearly four decades of television experience and integral roles in the launches of The Daily Show, The Real World and South Park into consulting and advisory gigs, board work and some executive coaching. Or, as he puts it, “busy staying busy.” Then he decided to step up to the mic.
This spring, Herzog and New York Magazine‘s pop culture critic Jen Chaney launched Basic!, a SiriusXM podcast that explores the unofficial history of (basic) cable TV. Forty-eight episodes were ordered, with guests including Jimmy Kimmel, Amy Schumer, Bryan Cranston and Ben Stiller recalling the glory days of cable. Several others, including Dave Chappelle and Jon Stewart, still sit high on Herzog’s wish list.

The year is 1995, and "Mystery Science Theater 3000" was undergoing changes. A conflict between producer Jim Mallon and show creator Joel Hodgson — largely over who was running the show and how they should go about making a "Mystery Science Theater 3000" feature film — caused the latter to leave the series halfway through its fifth season (head writer Mike Nelson would take over acting/hosting duties). Additionally, the show's lucrative contract with Comedy Central was about to run out. A man named Doug Herzog was put in control of Comedy Central, and his new vision for the network was raunchy animated programs...

Created by and starring Lennon, Kerri Kenney and Robert Ben Garant, the Reno-set series is a spoof of law enforcement documentary programs—most notably, the now-canceled Cops. Centered on violent, profane, drug-abusing officers, Reno 911! is a show without a soapbox, but it nonetheless poses a question that Lennon finds to be more relevant than ever in 2020: “Are these people supposed to be cops?”
From the actor and screenwriter’s perspective, the series’ cancellation by Comedy Central in 2009 was oddly premature. Nonetheless, in the new medium of short-form, he’s found that it’s truly come into the height of its powers.
Below, Lennon discusses the genesis of the revival, his thoughts on tackling politically incorrect humor today,...

Kerri Kenney-Silver is very matter-of-fact in saying that no one on the cast of “Reno 911!” wanted to stop doing the show when it was cancelled on Comedy Central 11 years ago. “When the idea came around, ‘Hey, let’s maybe do this again,’ everybody jumped for it,” said Kenney-Silver in our recent webchat (watch the video above). She did single out two people who were the biggest cheerleaders of the revival. One was Doug Herzog, who originally bought the pilot for Fox, then again when he moved to Comedy Central and did so once more when he moved over to Quibi. The other was Emmy nominee Niecy Nash. “Every few years, she’d call or text Tom [Lennon] or Ben [Garant] or I and say, ‘Okay, are we gonna do this again? Let’s do this again.’” Nash would also drop hints about a revival during press interviews as well.

Reno 911! will soon walk the television beat once again, this time on streaming platform Quibi.
Last December, it was announced that Quibi—a short-form streaming service backed by the coffers of Jeffrey Katzenberg and six major studio investors—will be the platform on which the Reno 911! revival manifests. Indeed, the classification as a “revival” is accurate, since this will be a proper continuation of the popular Cops-parodying mockumentary series, which originally ran on Comedy Central for six seasons (2003-2009). Thus, this is essentially a belated release of Reno 911! Season 7, albeit in a shorter form than we remember.
Original series creators (and main cast members) Thomas Lennon, Robert Ben Garant and Kerri Kenney-Silver return to write and star in the Reno revival. Quibi and Comedy Central are bringing back comedy series “Reno 911!” for a seventh season after a decade off the air.
The revival, which was announced on Friday, will be produced by Quibi and Comedy Central Productions. Creators Robert Ben Garant, Kerri Kenney-Silver and Thomas Lennon will all be returning to write and star in the new season.
Danny DeVito is also attached to executive produce, along with Peter Principato of Artists First, Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher of Jersey Television. More cast will be announced at a later date.
“Reno 911!” ran for six seasons of Comedy Central from 2003 to 2009, and followed the shenanigans of the Reno Sheriff’s Department.
“Reno 911! holds a special place in our hearts, and it will be a delight to get the original cast back together for ‘re-boot goofin.’ Hopefully Nick Swardson can still roller skate,” Lennon said. “Quibi’s short format seems custom made for our show.

Reno 911! is making a comeback. Quibi has given a green light to a seventh season of the beloved comedy series from Comedy Central Productions.

Peter Principato of Artists First will executive produce the series along with Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher of Jersey Television. More from the “everything old is new again” file: A pair of bygone MTV favorites — dating game show Singled Out and the Ashton Kutcher-led prank series Punk’d — are being revived for Quibi, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s new digital venture.
In a nod to “offering an optimal viewing experience for those on the go,” per the press notes, each show will get 20 new episodes of 10 minutes or less.
Here are loglines for the returning Punk’d, from STXtelevision in association with MTV Studios, and Singled Out, from MTV Studios:
The show that coined the verb “punk’d” dared to go where no show had gone before. Now that technology can really augment reality, we’re back to pull the boldest pranks on the biggest stars in Hollywood. This time around, no one is safe.
While downloading a dating app has never been easier, sorting through the singles is harder than ever.

MTV Studios and Quibi are teaming up to produce remakes of “Punk’d” and “Singled Out,” Variety has learned.
Both remakes, which will be available on the Jeffrey Katzenberg-created video streaming platform, will consist of 20 new episodes, each under ten minutes in length to remain in keeping with Quibi’s short-form content format.
“Punk’d” was a hidden camera reality show which aired for a total of ten seasons and was created by Ashton Kutcher, who also served as the host. Ryan Kadro left CBS News several weeks ago, but he isn’t leaving the news business.

A spokesman for Quibi declined to comment.

Katzenberg and Whitman have said Quibi is not intended to compete with Netflix or similar subscription services. Instead, it will offer 15-minute “chapters on the go” — episodic programming across a range of genres (including reality TV and news content), all meant to be consumed via smartphone.
With that content strategy in mind, it's no surprise Quibi has also been low-key building out its staff in other areas by recruiting from the teams behind popular social media sites and other shortform video platforms, as The Hollywood Reporter notes.

Comedy Central Unveils a Pop-Culture Show for the Internet, Inspired by ‘The Daily Show’ (Exclusive)
Comedy Central is hoping it’s whipped up the recipe for a daily dose of digital comedy, patterned on the success of its long-running TV mainstay, “The Daily Show.”
The Viacom-owned cable programmer is unveiling a new project called “The Creators Program”: a team of five stand-up comedians, writers and improv performers who will produce a short weekday take on pop culture and entertainment, as well as a weekly scripted workplace comedy — about working at Comedy Central.
The Creators Program crew was picked through an open casting call, and Comedy Central is aiming to launch the first fruits of their labor the last week of May on its YouTube channel (6.3 million subscribers) and Facebook page (6.3 million followers).
“This is Comedy Central’s biggest investment ever in digital and social content,” said Jennifer Danielson, Comedy Central’s senior VP of digital, although she declined to put a dollar figure on the initiative.
