One day in London’s Kensington district in 1983, Tina Turner’s resurrection finally appeared within reach. The prior decade had been one of stage-shaking triumphs, personal nightmares, various degrees of mortification, and now, a chance at possible redemption. But as musician and producer Martyn Ware soon learned, Turner’s past was never in the rearview mirror — and on that day, it was terrifyingly in her face.
The previous year, Turner had sung on an edgy, pulsating remake of the Temptations hit “Ball of Confusion,” and now Ware — who had co-helmed that track,...

Moby released a new album, Ambient 23, on Sunday. Earlier in the month, the musician announced the LP, explaining that the 16-track set is inspired by his early ambient heroes, including Martyn Ware, Brian Eno, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Will Sergeant.
“It’s a bit different than some of my more recent Ambient records because it’s almost exclusively made with weird old drum machines and old synths,” he added.
On its release day marking a new year, Moby provided a bit more background on the two-and-a-half-hour-long album. It was “Made to help anxiety (my own,...

Christmas Day traditionally brings some of the biggest TV audiences of the year in the U.K. But this year, instead of the Queen’s speech, the queen of rock ‘n’ roll will be holding down a key spot in the schedules.
On Christmas night, BBC Two will air “When Tina Turner Came to Britain,” a documentary that looks at the rise, fall and rise again of Turner’s career, and the key role Great Britain played in her story.
It will broadcast opposite such ratings heavyweights as “EastEnders” (BBC One) and “Doc Martin” (ITV1), but director and producer Dhivya Kate Chetty hopes the Wise Owl Films production will still win an audience.
“I can’t quite believe we’re on on Christmas Day,” Chetty tells Variety. “I’m still pinching myself; it’s great news. We’re up against something big, so we’re hoping for the diehard Tina...

“As I’m about to turn 80, I’d like to think I’ve become wise in some ways,” Tina Turner just told Rolling Stone. But there’s never been a revival like Tina’s Eighties comeback. She became a solo superstar when she was 44. Things like that just don’t happen. (For context: That’s how old Lauryn Hill, Andre 3000, Mark Ronson, and Jack White are now.)

None of it happened the easy way. Tina’s always been a fighter, because she had to be.

It doesn’t seem possible that it was around 30 years ago that A Flock of Seagulls ran so far away or Modern English melted with us, but it was. The story behind those acts, their biggest hits, and dozens of other New Wave acts are captured in all their ‘80s bad hairdo-ed, brightly colored-glory in “Mad World: An Oral History of New Wave Artists And Songs That Defined The 1980s.” Written by Lori Majewski and Jonathan Bernstein, with a forward by Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and an afterward by Moby, the book examines the New Wave era through the filter of 36 songs associated with the time, such as Gary Numan’s “Cars,” Duran Duran’s “Girls On Film” and The Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now.” Each chapter deals with one act and, while not limited to the group’s biggest hit, explores the story behind that tune and the...

Phil Oakey has said that he would be interested in recording new music with Martyn Ware in the future. Ware formed The Human League with Oakey and Ian Craig Marsh in the late 1970s, but Ware and March split off acrimoniously in 1980 to form Heaven 17. Oakey and Ware have since reconciled and The Human League and Heaven 17 shared a bill in 2008, together with fellow Sheffield band ABC, as part of the 'Steel City Tour'. Asked if he would work in the studio with Ware again, Oakey told Digital Spy: "Oh yeah, I could do that at some stage. Yeah, we've talked about that. I had lunch with him about three weeks ago." On what the collaboration could be called, Oakey's bandmate Susan Ann Sulley laughed: "It (more)...

Heaven 17 have said that their upcoming live shows will be more true to themselves than their recent nostalgia gigs. The band have played several of Tony Denton's Here & Now '80s tours, but are now taking their debut album Penthouse And Pavement on the road this November to mark its 30th anniversary. Singer Glen Gregory told The Quietus: "Well, we've done both to be honest but this is more true to how we are." Keyboard player Martyn Ware added: "We've been doing Here & Now tours for quite a while now. We supported Erasure in a big arena tour and supported Boy George and we've (more)...

La Roux and Heaven 17 have been confirmed to perform a collaboration early next year. The two acts will record together at Maida Vale Studios in London, with the session being broadcast on BBC 6 Music on January 29. "Heaven 17 have always maintained an open mind and collaborative attitude towards new musical ideas, and when the opportunity to work with La Roux came up, we jumped at the chance," keyboardist Martyn Ware said. "We really like their attitude towards pop writing, and we're also fans of Elly's voice - we're sure that our writing and performance experience combined with La Roux's youthful energy and talent will create a unique and exciting collaboration." La Roux singer Elly Jackson added that bandmate Ben Langmaid has long been a fan of the The Luxury Gap (more)...
