On Sunday, the 26th annual Critics Choice Awards hosted by Taye Diggs took place on a virtual and in-person stage with Nomadland and The Crown walking away with numerous accolades.
Nomadland won the biggest prize of Best Picture while filmmaker Chloe Zhao snatched trophies for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Netflix’s The Crown continues its streak as Gillian Anderson won for Best Supporting Actress for Drama for her turn as Margaret Thatcher. Meanwhile, Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin won for Best Actor and Actress in a Drama Series, respectively.
It was very noticeable that, right off the bat, the Critics Choice Awards were more inclusive than the Golden Globes with its winners — and nominees for that matter. In addition to Zendaya being honored with the SeeHer award, Daniel Kaluuya added more momentum to his awards season run as he won for Best Supporting Actor in Judas and the Black Messiah.

Long ago, about a year ago to be exact, when Covid-19 first reared its ugly head and the United States was not yet the fiery petri dish of percolating viral plague it would soon come to be, friends and I gathered in our Los Angeles area homes, expecting lockdown to last three, four weeks, at most. It’s insane to think so now, but there was a faint haze of domestic bliss in the air as people envisioned not having to drive to the office, staying home cocooned in weighted blankets while baking bread and writing that long overdue Great American Novel as the children busied themselves with pastel paints, macaroni art and TikTok videos.
Even as Los Angeles was ordered to lockdown on March 19, with schools, restaurants and various other brick and mortar businesses shuttered, there remained this fleeting notion that by summer, all would return to normal. Kids would head to summer camps,...

“Very exciting for little Ryder Allen and for the film, it’s our first award acknowledgement/nomination, so it’s very exciting for us,” reveals director Fisher Stevens the morning that his new film “Palmer” scored a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Young Actor or Actress. Although Apple TV+ only released the drama on January 29, the Justin Timberlake vehicle contends for Oscars and other awards against films from 2020, due to the eligibility period being extended in light of the global pandemic. Stevens admits, “We’re a little late in the game for it, but we’re excited; it’s great!”

Moments ago, the 26th annual Critics Choice Association revealed who and what their nominees are. For this very unique year, there’s of course a very unique slate of nominated films and talent. Scoring the most nominations this time around was David Fincher’s Mank, with Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari not far behind. Showing up for the first time in a clutch spot was Ben Affleck in Best Actor for The Way Back, while Never Rarely Sometimes Always still managed a handful of citations. Cca spread the love, as expected, though undoubtedly it was a strong showing for Netflix. Stay tuned to see how the Critics Choice Awards go down next month… Here now is the list of nominees: Best Picture Da 5 Bloods (Netflix) Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Netflix) Mank (Netflix) Minari (A24) News of the World (Universal Pictures) Nomadland (Searchlight Pictures) One Night in Miami (Amazon Studios) Promising Young Woman...

All of those films except “Tenet” were nominated in the Best Picture category.
In the acting categories, which contained between six and eight nominees, almost all of the performers nominated for the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards were also recognized by Critics Choice voters, with the exception of Amy Adams for “Hillbilly Elegy,” Sophia Loren for “The Life Ahead,...

Exclusive: In 2016, Cheryl Guerriero’s script about a college football star-turned-convict landed her a spot on the Black List. Nearly four years later, the writer-producer’s screenplay became Palmer, the Apple TV+ film directed by Oscar-winning The Cave helmer Fisher Stevens with Justin Timberlake starring in the lead role.
Set in a small Louisiana town, Palmer follows Timberlake’s Eddie Palmer as he returns to his community following some time behind bars. Looking to start over, Eddie finds company in a 7-year-old boy named Sam (breakout Ryder Allen), who amuses himself with pretty hair accessories, dolls and Disney princesses. Abandoned by his mother (Juno Temple) and often the target of bullying, Sam forges a brotherly bond with Eddie that helps the latter pick up the pieces of his once-broken life. June Squibb stars as Eddie’s grandmother Vivian, and Alisha Wainwright plays Sam’s Teacher Maggie.

Why is Justin Timberlake not in more movies? It was about 15 years ago that I got to see Timberlake making his first proper foray into the movie realm with the superb Alpha Dog. A movie with a wealth of unreal talent, like Ben Foster and Emile Hirsch to name a couple, and somehow Timberlake was a standout in the flick. His role in Southland Tales was the next step in cementing himself as a star in my eyes and with The Social Network it was becoming apparent to everyone.
Then you could say things kinda tapered off ,with a string of leading man roles in generic rom-coms failing to hit the mark and taking the odd bit-part and focusing back on the singing career. I have always been a fan of...

Actor and director Fisher Stevens was shocked when Donald Trump won the 2016 election, but he wanted to learn more about America since he felt he was living in a “bubble.”
When the script for “Palmer,” now streaming on Apple TV Plus, landed on his desk, he knew that was the way to learn more. And so he set out on his feature debut adventure. Prior to filming, Stevens who built a career in documentary filmmaking also landed a small role in HBO’s “Succession.” and it was that experience that influenced his on-set environment.

The debut of “Palmer” starring Justin Timberlake on Apple TV+ over the weekend helped drive the service’s biggest weekend yet in terms of viewership, Apple says.
Apple TV+ viewership rose by more than 33% in the weekend “Palmer” debuted on the streamer, and Apple also saw big engagement with the second seasons of the shows “Servant” and “Dickinson,” as well as some international attention for “Losing Alice.” “Palmer” was available in over 100 countries at launch.
Though the service saw the most eyeballs this past weekend, “Palmer” was not the biggest ever debut among Apple Original Films. The drama directed by Fisher Stevens was the third-biggest debut for an original film and is now the second most-watched film on the platform that also includes Tom Hanks’ war movie “Greyhound,” the Bill Murray and Rashida Jones comedy “On the Rocks” and the documentaries “Boys State” and “Fireball.” A rep declined to comment...

Justin Timberlake headlines the newest Apple TV+ film, "Palmer."When a movie has its heart in the right place, you can forgive a lot of things. Palmer, the latest Apple TV+ movie, is as saccharine as they come. It never aims to surprise, instead it just wants to make your heart soar and tear ducts swell. On both counts, it achieves its goal.
The film stars Justin Timberlake as Eddie Palmer, a former football star who spent the last twelve years of his life in prison. He gets out and lays low with his grandmother, Vivian (June Squibb giving you exactly what you expect), who often babysits her neighbor’s child, Sam (Ryder Allen). Sam’s Mom, Shelly (Juno Temple), goes on an indefinite bender, leaving Sam with Palmer and Vivian. Sam is obsessed with princesses and fairies, which often leaves him the target for schoolyard bullies.

“The White Tiger” was the kind of story that Priyanka Chopra Jonas was craving to be involved with creatively. “I’m really looking for a trajectory where I have the ability to play various characters and genres and not be bogged down or put into a box or a stereotype of what I can do,” she tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “That was my career in India. Pinky [her character] is a product of modern, urban India that is in touch with the world. It’s educated, understands the opportunity, rights and trajectories. That is what the movie is about.”
With upcoming roles in “Matrix,” the new sequel from Lana Wachowski, and her role as Pinky Madam in Ramin Bahrani’s “The White Tiger,” the actress and executive producer is finding her stride and challenging herself as a creative artist. Listen to the podcast below!

Can there still be any justification for calling Justin Timberlake an under-the-radar movie talent? Sure, he has an Oscar nomination — but it’s for the “Trolls” soundtrack. Meanwhile, he’s been racking up solid acting credits for years, yet every time he turns in another strong performance, people are newly surprised.
Fisher Stevens’ earnest small-town tale “Palmer” — streaming on Apple TV+ — is unlikely to earn Timberlake any awards, but it is another reminder that he’s got the potential for loftier dramatic ambitions.
What “Palmer” is, in every sense of the word, is decent. It’s familiar, and predictable, and a little bit hokey. But it’s also genuinely moving and surprisingly memorable, thanks to its two leads.

When Ryder Allen learned he would be auditioning for a starring role in “Palmer” opposite Justin Timberlake, the then 7-year-old actor had one question. “I was like, ‘Who’s Justin Timberlake?’’ Allen recalls with a laugh. “Now he’s like my best friend. So look at me now.”
It’s become commonplace to talk about child actors as “wise beyond their years,” but Allen just seems like any other 8-year-old kid who happens to be acting opposite one of the biggest stars in the world. He enjoys playing “Bakugan” on his Nintendo Switch and a game he invented with his sister where “we have a pillow and then you need to get the pillow. But it’s way more complicated.”

In “Palmer,” Justin Timberlake taps into his roots, headlining the inverse of last year’s “Hillbilly Elegy,” in which a Southern boy who went off to Yale looked back on his origins to explain the red-state attitudes that look so alien to conservatives. Here, Timberlake delivers a beer-chugging, pickup-driving, fight-picking portrait of what he might have become had he not left Tennessee at 12 to appear on “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club.” Not him, per se, but picture a talent who never got the chance to broaden his horizons. He might turn out like the leathery loner Timberlake portrays in this inspirational feature.

The trailer for Justin Timberlake’s new film “Palmer” has arrived. In the drama, Timberlake plays a former high school football star turned convicted felon who now has the responsibility of caring for 7-year-old Sam, whose interest in tea parties, dolls and fairies makes him the target of bullies at school.
“Palmer” is a coming-of-age story directed by Fisher Stevens, and the film shows a solemn, more introspective side to Timberlake as he looks after Sam and comes to realize that neither he nor the boy have to conform to what everyone expects them to be.
“Listen to me, son, kids are mean, especially when they see something that they’re not used to seeing,” Timberlake says in the trailer. “The truth is, I haven’t felt like I was good at anything until Sam.”
Cheryl Guerriero wrote the screenplay for “Palmer,” which also stars Juno Temple, Alisha Wainwright, June Squibb and Ryder Allen.
