After the disaster that was M. Night Shyamalan‘s adaptation of Nickelodeon’s brilliant animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Netflix is here with another adaptation and the hopes for this one are kind of high because the last Netflix live-action adaptation of One Piece was loved by new and existing fans of the IP. Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the adventures of a young boy named Aang, who is the world’s only hope to defeat the tyrannical Fire Nation. To do that he has to master all of the elements and in this adventure, he is helped by Katara and Zukko. While, Netflix’s live-action adaptation is not a direct adaptation of the animated series, as it is much more of a dramatic and visual feast than the comedic animated adventure like the animated series. The fans seem to love the live-action adaptation, and if you also loved...

This article contains spoilers for The Letter For The King. Read our spoiler-free review here.
Letter For the King just premiered on Netflix. The six-part fantasy adventure series follows the adventures of knight-in-training Tiuri (Amir Wilson), as he is unwittingly pulled into a high-stakes mission to, yes, deliver a letter to the king. Along the way, he meets friends and makes enemies, in a tale of magic, monasteries, and mad horses that is fun for the whole family.
While the first season does a good job of wrapping up the plots introduced in the start of this story, there is definitely room for continuing the story. We’re still don’t know what the heck was up with the voices Tiuri was hearing, what might be next for Lavinia, or if Eviellan will get the support it needs after what appears to be a war of conquest on the part of Dagonaut and Unauwen.

Why, yes. Yes, it is. Netflix‘s newest fantasy fare (perfect for family watching), Letter For the King, is not an original story. The six-part series is loosely based on a Dutch novel called De brief voor de Koning. Written by Tonke Dragt in 1962, the book is a classic in the Netherlands, but less well known in the States.
That being said, it has been published in many languages, including Danish, English, German, Greek, Estonian, French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Czech, Spanish and Catalan. The English-language version was published in 2013. There was a Dutch film adaptation made in 2008.
How Closely Does The Letter For the King Follow the Book?

Not super closely, it turns out. Both the book and the TV series are about a soon-to-be knight named Tiuri who sets out to deliver a letter to the king,...

In an era of increasingly fractured media audiences, it can be rare to find a TV show, especially a live-action fantasy, that can be watched and enjoyed by more than one generation of viewer. With such a wealth of platform and options, and often times numerous media-playing devices within one household with which to enjoy them, it is less common for TV series to court an entire family—TV production companies leave that to the movie studios and their four-quadrant blockbusters.
The Letter For the King, a six-episode Netflix series loosely adapted from Tonke Dragt’s 1962 Dutch novel De brief voor de Koning, fits into the neglected category of the live-action fantasy adventure family show nicely. However, unlike most fare in that category—e.g. Once Upon a Time, Merlin or, going back further, Xena: Warrior Princess—it has the budget to back up its derivative plot with the money for some impressive horse work,...

Netflix’s The Letter for the King adapts Tonke Dragt’s classic fantasy novel as an awe-inspiring television series.
The Letter for the King is a Netflix fantasy offering that, in the recent wake of The Witcher’s popularity, seems so abundantly tailor-made for transitional viewing that it won’t require any of its famed algorithms for a suggestion.
Much like The Witcher, Netflix’s The Letter for the King is based on a book, in this case key female fantasy writer Tonke Dragt’s 1962 Dutch novel, De brief voor de Koning, an acclaimed, million-plus-selling quasi-medieval story about a young squire who becomes entrusted with the delivery of the titular memo, on which the fate of the entire kingdom hangs. The book – reprinted frequently and in several languages – has been adapted for musical theater and had a 2008 movie adaptation released in its native Netherlands.
