His novel about the Holocaust, Wartime Lies, almost became one of
Stanley Kubrick 's last films; the director turned the book into a
screenplay called Aryan Papers and had cast
Johanna ter Steege and
Joseph Mazzello in the lead roles. Kubrick abandoned the project as he considered it too similar to
Schindler's List (1993) which
Steven Spielberg was making around the same time.
