Panic! at the Disco‘s founding drummer Spencer Smith announced on the band’s official website earlier today that he will be permanently leaving.
In a website entry titled “A Message From Spencer…,” Smith wrote that he recently “realized that I wasn’t able to be there for the band the way I wanted to be, and more importantly, the way they needed me to be.” He thanked fans for all the love and support they have shown Panic! over the years and candidly addressed his own struggles with addiction.
In August of 2013, Smith left the band to seek treatment for addiction to drugs and alcohol. At that time, bandmate Brendon Urie said that Smith was “away getting the help he needs.” During the band’s Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! touring effort, Dan Pawlovich filled in for Smith on drums.
