With eight Tony Award nominations, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Appropriate, starring Sarah Paulson, has been extended for a third and what producers say is a final time.
After 26 weeks on Broadway, the production has added an additional eight performances to its run, with closing night at the Belasco Theater now set for Sunday, June 30.
The Second Stage Theater production received unanimous raves, with box office consistently strong with sold out (or nearly so) houses.
“We are beyond thrilled to extend Appropriate for one more week so additional audiences can witness this astonishing cast bring Branden’s brilliant play to life,” said the show’s producers in a joint statement. “The response from critics and audiences alike has been overwhelming, propelling the production from The Hayes Theater to an extended run at The Belasco and we feel lucky and extremely grateful for the support the show has received from the Broadway community.”

With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.
The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

Welcome to Tony Talk, a weekly column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan discuss the Tony Awards race. With less than a week to go before nominations for the 77th Tonys are announced, we discuss the recently-opened and raved-about new play “Stereophonic” and consider how many of its performers might earn nominations in those challenging Featured Actor and Actress races.
David Buchanan: Hey Sam! We are officially less than a week away from the Tony nominations, and now that we have a tiny bit more clarity on the Best Musical race as shows like “Suffs” and “Hell’s Kitchen” have opened, I’m starting to really fret those pesky featured performer categories. A lot of shows this season are large ensemble pieces; last week, for example, saw the opening of the terrific play “Stereophonic,” which has an impeccable seven member ensemble. But I don...

The world of Fallout is full of destructive power. This post-nuclear-armageddon world is one of laser guns, mutant monsters, and guns that fire actual mini-nukes, yet the most powerful weapon in the world is time — and a board room full of greedy executives with enough power to start the end of the world just to raise stock prices.

Purple Rain, Prince’s smash 1984 music-packed film, is being developed for the stage by a Broadway producer, with a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and direction by Tony nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz.
Jacobs-Jenkins’ Appropriate is currently a hit on Broadway and an all-but-certain shoo-in for multiple Tony nominations this year. Blain-Cruz was Tony-nominated for her direction of the Lincoln Center Theater’s 2022 production of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth.
The stage adaptation will feature music and lyrics from Prince’s Purple Rain movie and album.
The project was announced today by Broadway producer Orin Wolf. Additional production details and timing will be announced in the coming months.
Although Wolf’s announcement did not specifically mention Broadway, instead simply saying the project is being developed for the stage, Broadway almost certainly must be on minds given the high-profiles and previous credits of the individuals involved, not...

There are no Black characters in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ caustic family drama Appropriate, but they nevertheless haunt the play. They are the unmarked graves scattered over the grounds of the former plantation home in southeast Arkansas, where the story’s action takes place. They are the spirits, felt like a shiver by guests in the home. And they are the objects collected — hoarded, really — over decades by the estate’s patriarch.
He’s dead now, and Appropriate, which opened Monday at Second Stage’s Hayes Theater in New York, concerns the blistering reunion of his heirs. The production is the first of Jacobs-Jenkins’ original works to be on Broadway and is staged by Lila Neugebauer (Causeway), who directed the dramatist’s Everybody at Signature Theater in 2017.
Appropriate begins with the shrill whine of cicadas. As that noise quiets, others intensify: the sounds of bodies shuffling in the bushes and the grunts of physical exertion.

Holiday shoppers were in a Broadway spirit last week, with total box office for the 26 shows up a couple percentage points from the previous week to $31,465,465, attendance holding steady at 225,585 and the average ticket price a strong $139.48.
Still, while shows such as Merrily We Roll Along, Sweeney Todd, The Lion King, Wicked, I Need That and newcomer Appropriate filled seats during the week ending Dec. 17, Broadway’s holiday season isn’t quite as joyous as last year, with total box office receipts down about 16% year over year. Attendance was off by 18% compared to last year at this time, in no small part due to fewer productions on the boards – 26 compared to 34 last December.
Though fewer in number than last year, Broadway shows individually were, overall, reporting decent figures. Seventeen of the 26 productions filled more than 90% of their seats, with Hamilton, Merrily We Roll Along, Moulin Rouge!, I Need That and...

Sarah Paulson and Elle Fanning look so excited to have opened their new show on Broadway!
The co-stars met up on the red carpet for the Appropriate opening night after party on Monday night (December 18) in New York City.
They were joined at the event by co-stars Corey Stoll and Michael Esper.
Elle also posed for a photo with her older sister Dakota Fanning, who attended the event to support her family member. See all of the other stars who were there!
The play is billed as a “darkly comic American family drama” that takes place as the Lafayette family has returned to their late patriarch’s Arkansas home to deal with the remains of his estate. Long-hidden secrets and buried resentments can’t be contained, and the family is forced to face the ghosts of their past.
Appropriate is now playing on Broadway through March 3, 2024.

When she was playing Catherine on Hulu’s The Great, Elle Fanning’s co-stars often encouraged her to do theater. Many of them had stage experience, and after watching Fanning’s Emmy-nominated turn on the show, which itself was adapted from a play, they told her she was ready. With that encouragement, and her own motivation to try the medium, Fanning accepted the offer to make her Broadway debut in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ darkly comedic family drama Appropriate this winter.
It’s her first stage experience, aside from playing Persephone in a mandatory sixth-grade school play, and she’s been learning the ropes from co-stars including Sarah Paulson and her director, Lila Neugebauer. She’s quick to admit that she’s still “extremely nervous” to act onstage, but she’s learned to welcome that feeling.

With the 2022 thriller "Resurrection," director Andrew Semans crafted an elegant and disturbing portrait of psychological abuse by thrusting viewers directly into the headspace of the lead character. To watch the movie is to feel the tightly enclosed traps closing in on its protagonist, and by extension, the viewer. For a horror-adjacent movie with a title like "Resurrection," you might think it's about something coming back from the dead. And in a way, it is -- a ghost from the past, back to haunt the coldly professional Margaret.
But biologist David (Tim Roth) is very much alive, very real, and very threatening. And Margaret's daughter Abbie (Grace Kaufman) is almost 18, the same age Margaret was when the 20-years-older David charmed her and her parents, got her to move into his home, and quickly began destroying her sense of self. Now he is back in her life, orbiting her and pushing her...

Pavement, the venerable indie rock band fronted by Stephen Malkmus, is getting its own feature film treatment.
Her Smell director Alex Ross Perry is helming the film, which is in the early stages of planning and comes after Ross Perry debuted the unexpected Slanted! Enchanted! A Pavement Musical with an Off Broadway run earlier this month.
Pavement, which put out a number of records on Matador Records, is best known for songs such as Cut Your Hair and Stereo, recently reunited for their latest reunion tour.
Perry told The New Yorker that the musical was part of a wider Pavement Cinematic Universe, although details are scarce, even to him, it seems.

After a furiously prolific beginning to his career, with six features in less than ten years, we’ve been waiting to hear what Alex Ross Perry is working on after 2018’s Her Smell. With production already underway on his next movie, it’s now been unveiled: a project that will keep him in the world of rock and roll.
Earlier this month, a new production from Alex Ross Perry entitled “Slanted! Enchanted!: A Pavement Musical,” had just two performances at New York City’s Sheen Center. Now, thanks to a new piece in The New Yorker, the production has been revealed to be part of a much larger cinematic project dedicated to the Stephen Malkmus-led indie rock band.

Or a team of theater kids giving jazz hands while they all sing “Shady Lane”? Or “AT&T” turned into a boot-scootin’ line dance, complete with cowboy hats and yeee-haws? Slanted! Enchanted!: A Pavement Musical is all these things and more.
The whole idea of turning the Pavement songbook into a jukebox musical might sound crazy, but nothing could prepare you for how utterly bonkers this show is.

"The life... we made... was perfect." IFC Films has debuted the full-length official trailer for Resurrection, a mysterious, compelling indie thriller from up-and-coming filmmaker Andrew Semans. This premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival in January at the start of this year - it made our Top 10 of the Fest and has been picking up buzz playing at Sundance London, too. A woman's carefully constructed life is upended when an unwelcome shadow from her past returns, forcing her to confront the monster she's evaded for two decades. Who is he? What is she hiding in her past? What is really going on between them? There's only one way to find out - you have to see it and decipher it yourself. Rebecca Hall stars as Rebecca, along with Tim Roth, Grace Kaufman, Michael Esper & Angela Wong Carbone. I wrote in my review that this is "a masterful psychological thriller that roars...

Rebecca Hall follows her terrific turn in The Night House with yet another stunning horror performance in Resurrection, a twisted psychological thriller from writer-director Andrew Semans. By turns chilling and disturbing, it’s a gripping study of trauma and madness.
Hall plays Margaret, a successful businesswoman in upstate New York, whose teenage daughter Abbie (Grace Kaufman) is on the verge of leaving for college. Margaret’s life is rigidly controlled and ordered, until she spots David (Tim Roth) at a conference and has a panic attack that sends her spiralling into terror. Soon, Margaret begins seeing David everywhere, triggering memories of their horrific past together. But is David’s current threat all in her head, or is something much darker going on?

This year’s Sundance Film Festival was heavy on genre fare, with plenty of horror flicks and thrillers dominating the lineup and winning some of its biggest awards. A common theme was bold filmmakers elevating once-pulpy genres into high art, and Andrew Semans is no exception. His latest film, “Resurrection,” earned strong reviews for taking a premise that has been explored in countless generic thrillers and turning it into something truly unique.
“Resurrection” tells the story of a woman (played by Rebecca Hall) who finds her normal existence disrupted when a man from her past suddenly reemerges in her life. As the dark details of their past relationship begin to emerge, her life starts to unravel in ways she never could have expected.
While that description could apply to any number of basic cable thrillers, the film won critics over by gradually devolving into something much more unhinged that needs...

IFC Films and Shudder have acquired the North American rights to “Resurrection,” a psychological thriller starring Rebecca Hall that made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this week.
Andrew Semans wrote and directed the film that also stars Tim Roth, Grace Kaufman and Michael Esper and that generated buzz at Sundance for its shocking and terrifying themes involving abusive relationships blended with more naturalistic horror elements in the French grand guignol legacy.

There are very few actors with Rebecca Hall’s facility for making difficult, even contradictory characters seem plausible. So it’s quite something to say that even her knack for the dignified and intelligent portrayal of mental and behavioral instability meets its Waterloo with Andrew Semans’ “Resurrection,” a psychological thriller that starts off promisingly before swerving into serious (and sadly self-serious) derangement. It winds up several stops north of bonkers, in a finale that shoots for transgressive, psycho-biological role-reversal, but plays like 1994’s Arnold Schwarzenegger comedy “Junior” given a torture-porn makeover.
Initially, Margaret (Hall) is an aspirational figure. With a glass-walled office at her lucrative pharma job, a well-appointed apartment and intimate yet no-strings sex-on-demand with married co-worker Peter (Michael Esper), she is also a doting mom to 17-year-old Abbie (Grace Kaufman), who is about to head off to college. (On one level “Resurrection” can be read as the mother of all empty-nest breakdowns.
