After the Arrow Film release of Nekromantik it was only a matter of time before Nekromantik 2 made its way onto Blu-ray. Another banned movie featuring people with an infatuation with the dead, this one takes things a little more extreme, if that was even possible.
When Monika (Monika M.) meets Mark (Mark Reeder) they soon become lovers, but this causes problems for the nurse. While Mark is handsome and trustworthy, the corpse is a better lover. How can she decide between the two?
Nekromantik 2 feels very much like the first film but with a bigger budget. This time though there is a satirical edge to the film which makes fun of the art film style with which it actually embraces at the same time.

The high-concept low brow film is nothing new, especially among those of us who follow independent films. Unfortunately, most of them seem to fail in either one or both of those categories, as it is a difficult tight rope to walk. Shinji Imaoka's Underwater Love was conceived as a high concept work and wasn't necessarily an organic extension of his own imagination, however, in spite of this, he's managed to create something quite special. Third Window Films presents us with Underwater Love for the first time on English subtitled DVD with quality extras and a limited edition run including Stereo Total's fun, lo-fi score. Once you surrender yourself to the experience, this film is a sweet, unassuming piece of work that just happens to feature...

I didn’t think I would have to insult the intelligence of our readers by pointing out a very simple fact, but based on the first comment we received, I guess I should make something clear. This is a list of our favourite soundtracks of 2011. We are currently working on a list of the best original scores, which should be posted sometime within the week. Let us know if you think we left out any soundtracks you would recommend. Enjoy!
10 – Young Adult
One of the themes of Jason Reitman’s upcoming film Young Adult, is the idea of being stuck in the past, and trying to relive your glory days, and so it’s no surprise that the soundtrack to the film is loathed with 1990s alt-rock cuts. Due December 6th via Rhino Records, the fifteen-track disc features the Replacements, the Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr., Teenage Fanclub, Cracker, 4 Non Blondes, Veruca Salt and many more.

Director: Shinji Imaoka. Review: Adam Wing. Just when you thought the Japanese film industry had run out of ideas, along comes Shinji Imaoka’s Underwater Love, a soft porn symphony complete with jaunty tunes, naked flesh and whimsical flights of fancy. If that’s not strange enough, what do you say to a quirky account of love between a woman and a sea creature? Directed by the pink-film veteran behind tasty treats like Lunch Box and Frog Song, shot by famed cinematographer Christopher Doyle (Hero, In the Mood for Love), with original music by German duo Stereo Total, Underwater Love is a musical stampede of the likes you have never seen before. With added fleshy bits. Asuka (Sawa Masaki) works in a lakeside fish factory and life seems to be going swimmingly. In fact, she’s just about to marry her doting boss (Mutsuo Yoshioka). One day, she encounters a Kappa,...

In our second Fantasic Fest ‘cast, Rick, Justine and SImon talk up three of the more ballyhooed Japanese flicks kicking around the fest: Yoshimasa Ishibashi’s depressive technicolor dream Milorcrorze: A Love Story; A Boy and His Samurai, the new family-oriented flick from Yoshihiro Nakamura, who also brought us Fish Story and Golden Slumbers; and the “pink musical” Underwater Love, from director Shinji Imaoka and Dp Christopher Doyle.

Whatever your tastes, there’s a very good chance that Shinji Imaoka’s Underwater Love is unlike anything you’ve seen before. A self-described “pink musical” – meaning it features sequences of soft-core porn to go with its songs – it’s a silly, tasteless, bewitching, and joyously nonsensical foray into romance, myth and taboo-busting. The director has made his career in Japanese soft porn so the high level of sexual content is expected. However this time around Imaoka has teamed up with acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle and turned in a fantasy sex musical revolving around the legendary water creature, the kappa.
Sound On Sight was proudly quoted on the first teaser trailer after its premiere at Tribeca. Now the full Japanese theatrical trailer has arrived. No we are not quoted in this spot but the international trailer includes more music from German pop act Stereo Total. Enjoy!

Imaoka wastes no time establishing the movie’s go-for-broke giddiness. Asuka (Sawa Masaki) – frequently described as an “old lady” despite being around 30 – works at a fish-processing factory immediately adjoining a seemingly vast swampland. She is engaged to her boss (Mutsuo Yoshioka), who is both creepily possessive and sexually insatiable. Her daily monotony is broken with the appearance of a “kappa” (Yoshiro Umezawa), a swamp-dwelling creature of myth who subsists on cucumbers and usually sticks close to a body of water.

Everyone who’s been to the Fantasia Film Festival here in Montreal knows two things: one, it’s awesome; two, there are an insane, perhaps even impossible, number of features to choose from. Inevitably, some movies will live up to or even exceed the hype, while others fizzle out upon actual viewing. Every year I make a list of movies that, based on various factors of my own choosing, are as close to “safe bets” as you’re likely to find at a festival this varied and wild. Here’s what made the cut this year:
13 Assassins (Director’s Cut)
Takahi Miike’s samurai epic has received glowing reviews the world ’round, and it’s finally come to Montreal a couple months after its limited Us run. Said to be both doggedly old-fashioned and replete with the sort of hyper-stylized violence Miike made his name on, it’s the more...

Shinji Imaoka, one of the most critically acclaimed directors of ‘pink’ film, a subset of Japanese soft porn, teamed up with acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle to film Underwater Love, a sexually charged fantasy about a young woman who falls in love with a mythical kappa.
Chris had a chance to review the film at Tribeca earlier this year calling it, “a soft-porn musical with heart”. The trailer has been released via Twitch and what would you know, Sound On Sight has been quoted in the montage. Check out the trailer below.
A few interesting notes to mention: The creature effects were provided by Tokyo Gore Police director Yoshihiro Nishimura and they had just five days to shoot it and the music was provided by Germany’s Stereo Total.
Here is the official plot synopsis:

When 15-year-old Emma lands a competitive spot on a young women’s equestrian acrobatics team, she is taken under the wing of her slightly older peer Cassandra. Obsessed with strength and control, Emma covets Cassandra’s natural grace and poise, while Cassandra in turn silently desires more than just Emma’s discipline. The psychological stakes of their friendship intensify as the two jockey for top position, and loyalty is traded for unbridled power. Meanwhile, Emma’s curious and innocent eight-year-old sister (in a remarkably complex performance delivered by rising star Isabella Lindquist) is prematurely spurred to confront the treacherous frontiers of sexuality and womanhood on her own.
Lisa Aschan’s award-winning directorial debut digs between the cracks of human behavior to reveal the seemingly naïve experience of girlhood as a feeding ground for underhanded brutality and rivalry. Using naturalistic direction, evocative imagery, and engrossing performances, Aschan smartly...

It is one of the strangest on-screen combinations in recent days. Shinji Imaoka - one of the acknowledged masters of 'pink' film, a subset of Japanese soft porn - recruited hugely acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle - frequent collaborator of Wong Kar Wai - to shoot a sex fantasy about a young woman who falls in love with a mythical kappa, a turtle like creature with a noted fondness for cucumbers. The creature effects were provided by Tokyo Gore Police director Yoshihiro Nishimura and they had just five days to shoot it. And, oh yes, it's also a song-and-dance musical with original tunes provided by Germany's Stereo Total. The film is Underwater Love and it is fresh off its world premiere at the prestigious Tribeca...

This year’s Tribeca will be running from Wednesday, April 20 to Sunday, May 1, so its close start date means that the lineup of movies are coming in fast. We’ve already gotten the World Narrative and World Documentary categories, and the next batch of movies have just been revealed.
Thanks to Deadline, we now have movies in the Spotlight, Cinemania, Special Screening and Sports categories. The list isn’t half bad; the one I’m looking forward to the most is The Guard, which got very strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year. All the categories seem to have solid picks, and I’d say this is shaping up to be a good year. Tfs will be there (including me!), so many of these movies will have reviews up on the site when the festival runs. Take a look at it below:

Well, congratulations New Yorkers, because you’ll get to see at least 2 films I saw at Sundance in January, when they screen at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, which just announced the second half of its festival lineup – the Spotlight, Cinemania, and Special Screening sections, most notably.
The films I’m referring to are Michael Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest documentary, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, and The Guard, which Don Cheadle co-stars in, as an FBI agent (or is it CIA).
I’m still planning on going through the full list of entries to spotlight any titles worthy of this website, and I’ll do that in coming days/weeks… definitely before the festival begins next month – a festival I plan to attend, since it’s right in my backyard.
Worth noting is that Rapaport’s doc will be making its New York premiere, the...

[Our very sincere thanks to Screen International contributor, film translator and all purpose man of Japanese film Jason Gray for the following report from the set of Shinji Imaoka's Underwater Love.]
Just over a month ago I had the opportunity to visit the set of Shinji Imaoka's latest pink film production, Underwater Love (Onna no Kappa, 『おんなの河童』), shot by legendary cinematographer Christopher Doyle (see previous Twitch post). Underwater Love marks Japanese production company Kokuei's 50th year in the pinku eiga business as well as their first foreign co-production, in partnership with Germany's Rapid Eye Movies.
I was picked up in front of famed indie cinema Theater Pole-Pole Higashi-Nakano by the film's publicity company staff and we were off to Lake Kasumigaura in Ibaraki Prefecture. I was joined on the 90km ride by Japanese cinema expert and former Tokyo animeOnline editor Bryan Hartzheim, who also happened to translate the shooting draft of the Underwater Love screenplay.
We turned off the highway, navigating local roads and rural routes until we finally arrived at the waterfront set. Lake Kasumigaura was much larger than I expected.

You'll be forgiven if you found it fantastically strange when word came out that acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle - the man behind the camera for all of Wong Kar Wai's key films - was currently at work in Tokyo as the cinematographer on Japanese pinku picture Underwater Love. Pinku, for the uninitiated, is essentially a form of Japanese soft-porn and the idea of Doyle moving into skin flicks was already weird enough to catch the attention even before we heard that the film was also a musical. Yes, a Japanese sex musical. And now it gets even weirder with the first official plot details:
From Japan's Kokuei Company and Germany's Rapid Eye Movies comes a whimsical pink film (softcore ) musical about a woman and a sea creature. The story involves Asuka, a woman in her thirties who works in a lakeside fish factory. She's about to be married to her boss,...
