Former President Barack Obama made mention of the end of Hollywood’s labor strife at a special screening on Friday of Rustin, the Netflix biopic of civil rights Bayard Rustin made by he and former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Prioductions.
Introducing the movie at the Hbcu First Look Film Festival, Obama said, “It’s great to see even more of you since the strikes are over,” a reference to the restrictions on writers and actors in promoting their projects during the walkout.
He added, “As somebody who cares a lot about the power of workers in this country and as the father of somebody who writes in film, I am glad that both the writers and the actors came to an agreement that recognizes with worth and their work.”
The screening was held at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Colorado Congressmen Ed Perlmutter (D-co) and Jason Crow (D-co) have re-introduced a Resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives to designate July 20 as “National Heroes Day” to honor the nation’s everyday heroes.
The campaign to delegate July 20th as National Heroes Day has received the support of several notable filmmakers and celebrities in the entertainment industry and as well as some of this country’s longtime philanthropic leaders, such as Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Best Buddies and Eric Zahren, President of the 117 year-old Carnegie Hero Fund.
The resolution was first introduced last year on July 20 and sought to also recognize the everyday heroes across the 50 states who came to the aid of others during the Covid pandemic.
“The Carnegie Hero Fund is proud to support the National Heroes Day initiative and its efforts to shine a light on everyday heroes all around us,” said Hero Fund President Eric Zahren.

The film, premiering as part of the network’s “Countdown to Christmas” programming event, follows writer Lou (Sparks) after she opens a 100-year-old time capsule and finds her grandfather’s journal, causing her to question whether she should move to New York after Christmas to further her career or stay in Pine Grove to carry on her family’s local newspaper. When she meets charming chef Kyle (Xavier), who is also at a crossroads, the pair develop a magical connection during the holiday season, helping each of their journeys.
In the movie, the “American Idol” winner delivers her own renditions of two classic Christmas songs, “This Christmas” and “Oh Holy Night.” Sparks’ original song “Oh, It’s Christmas,” from her album “Cider & Hennessy,” will also be featured in the film.

Amazon won’t bring back “Good Girls Revolt” for a second season.
The series, which premiered in October, garnered strong reviews and appeared to attract a decent audience vs. other Amazon series, according to data from Symphony. But according to insiders, Amazon Studios head Roy Price was not a fan of “Good Girls Revolt” (and didn’t see it as an awards contender) and decided that the show’s first season would be its last.

It’s no coincidence that Amazon released its period drama “Good Girls Revolt,” about 1960s-era female employees seeking equality in the newsroom, less than two weeks before Election Day. Although the feminist-friendly series is set over 40 years ago, the issues its characters rally behind are still as relevant today – and, in fact, have been a key part of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign platform.
“[Amazon] immediately knew that they wanted to market it before the election, that it would be the Year of the Woman, that Hillary would be running,” executive producer Lynda Obst told IndieWire earlier this summer.

As acclaimed as it was, Mad Men was never a breakout ratings hit — which makes it all the more strange that so many ’60s-set clones have popped up since its debut. First came NBC’s The Playboy Club and ABC’s Pan Am, both cancelled after a single season. And now comes Amazon’s newsroom drama Good Girls Revolt (debuting this Friday), which unfortunately is closer in quality to those two misfires than the original. It gets the period clothes and music right, but forgets to include any of the insight and emotional complexity that made Mad Men great.

So says a member of the audience gathered to watch 77-year-old Eleanor Holmes Norton, a congresswoman in Washington D.C., try (and fail) to park her car into a normal, wide-open spot. Now we are first to admit that we are terrible at parking. If we have to parallel park, forget it. We're forking over 12 bucks to the valet so we don't have to worry about that nonsense. PETA’s new “Glass Walls” exhibition—which takes its name from Sir Paul McCartney’s poignant quote, If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian – is making its national debut on the National Mall, and celebrating its arrival in Washington is civil rights leader and D.C. On CNN's American Morning, District of Columbia Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton lashed out at Congress over the budget battle on Capitol Hill, saying it's time the District of Columbia "told the Congress to go straight to hell." DC's budget--which has been presented to Congress for approval (and it's balanced) has not been approved, meaning the District cannot, essentially, spend its own money. "They require our budget to come here," Holmes Norton said, "which is an abomination since we're talking about local funds."
