Sheriff Alex Villanueva — the lightning-rod Los Angeles County lawman — has “created an atmosphere” within the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department in which “the violation of civil rights is not only approved by the department, but encouraged.” That’s the stunning allegation at the heart of a new lawsuit against the Lasd filed by two Black residents of Inglewood who claim they were needlessly brutalized by department deputies — one by being tased and allegedly shot with rubber bullets, the other kneed in the neck until he could not breathe.

Adapted from the nostalgic, bittersweet Stephen King novella The Body, director Rob Reiner’s Stand By Me has one of the more memorable tear-jerking endings of the 1980s. After completing their quest to see a dead body, four boys return to their own sleepy home town and their own separate lives. One of those boys, Gordie (Wil Wheaton), grows up to be a writer played by Richard Dreyfuss, and he lets the audience know what happens to the other three kids. The news isn’t always so great, especially for the movie’s most dynamic and heroic character, Chris Chambers (River Phoenix), who meets an unpleasant fate in a crummy fast food restaurant. Compounding the sadness is the fact that the ending narration is delivered by Dreyfuss, whose previous film American Graffiti ended pretty much the exact same way. Plus, there’s the depressing realization that the actor playing Chris...

There's a moment of sharp emotional poignancy towards the end of Rob Reiner's beloved coming of age drama Stand by Me. After a summer he'll never forget Gordie (Wil Wheaton) waves goodbye to his friend Chris Chambers, and as the latter strides off, his image fades away from the screen.
It's a scene that cuts deep for anyone who's seen and loves Stand by Me; not only does it foreshadow Chris's untimely death, years later it all draws parallels between the character and the actor who so memorably brought him to life, River Phoenix.
It has been 20 years since Phoenix died tragically outside the Viper Room club in Los Angeles, but his filmography grows all-the-more impressive over time. Phoenix has a spectacular list of collaborations with directors, racking up films with the likes of Joe Dante, Steven Spielberg, Peter Bogdanovich, Gus Van Sant, Sidney Lumet and Peter Weir in his all-too brief 23 years.

If you didn't celebrate Stand By Me's 25th anniversary last year like any proud, nostalgic, train-dodging American, I don't think we should meet. It's the definitive Stephen King adaptation, the definitive River Phoenix movie (Take that, Running on Empty!), and the only movie I can think of that is both exceedingly believable and exceedingly sappy. More important, it fulfills my checklist of qualifications for our new feature Best Movie Ever: I can watch it again and again, it's unpretentious, it's funny when it wants to be, and it's real. Ben E. King, your legacy goes on untarnished.
Stand By Me tells the story of four 12-year-old boys in the early '60s who hike for miles along railroad tracks for a chance to glimpse the dead body of one of their classmates, a missing kid who might've been hit by a train. The kids consider it an adventure -- which it is,...

For those lucky few who had the opportunity to watch River Phoenix’s film career blossom right in front of their eyes, there’s no doubt it’s the sort of bragging rights they wish they didn’t have. Because for all those who had the chance to experience the young actor’s star-making turns in films like Running on Empty, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, My Own Private Idaho, and of course, Stand By Me, they also had to watch it all come to a sudden end when Phoenix, the eldest brother of Joaquin, passed away at the...

On August 8, 1986 director Rob Reiner began an incredible five film run by releasing a seemingly simple adaptation of a Stephen King novella called The Body. Reiner's film was called Stand By Me and starred River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton, Corey Feldman and Jerry O'Connell as four young friends who, in 1959, set out on a journey to see a dead body. After initially opening in limited release, the film expanded a few weeks later and became a box office hit, raking in just over $50 million. As a young boy, though, none of that was important. What was important is when I finally saw Stand By Me, I was at an impressionable enough age that Reiner's film, so expertly crafted and filled with perfect dialogue and performances, taught me things my parents never would have thought of. I was schooled in the ways of Fifties pop music. I learned what a leech was.

It’s a time to take a break from our busy lives and revel in the one thing that we all share: a deep, passionate love of movies. If you have a question you’d like answered by the Fsr readers and staff, send us an email at editors@filmschoolrejects.com. What character do you see yourself the most in? Thanks. – Donald B. Adam Charles The answer to this can vary depending on who I’m around at the time. When I’m with my older brother I think the Gordie Lachance / Chris Chambers relationship from Stand By Me is a pretty good depiction of our personalities (me being Gordie). My brother isn’t quite the trouble-maker that Chris is and I don’t quite have the fear of embracing my...
