With Christmas just around the corner it is time to get into a festive mood and there is nothing better to start the season than a Christmas Slasher. Craig Anderson has got into the spirit of Christmas past with a colourful homage to the classic 80’s slasher in his latest release Red Christmas. I got a chance to ask him a few questions about why he chose to write and direct a Christmas Horror, dealing with the taboo subject of abortion and working with Dee Wallace. And if you haven’t read it yet, check out my Red Christmas review
What can we expect from your new film Red Christmas?
The incredible actor Dee Wallace – Et (1982), Cujo (1983), The Howling (1981); stars as a mother who brings her grown up family home for Christmas. It’s a normal Christmas day with plenty of family stress, but then a really weird dude rocks up the door.

From the emotional making of a low-budget slasher to zombie nightmares, Gothic horrors, an outrageously strange mind cult, a sci-fi alien action extravaganza, a comic strip creature feature and the last word in Killer Clowns, this year’s Horror Channel FrightFest Halloween 2017 line-up is an eclectic mix of the quirky, unusual and extreme… In celebration of the event here’s brand-new posters for threee of the films airing today at the Empire Haymarket, London.
Horror Movie: A Low Budget Nightmare
A funny, sad, candid and revealing documentary on the making of Red Christmas. Sick of playing quirky roles on Australian TV shows, actor/filmmaker Craig Anderson puts everything on the line to make his first low budget slasher about an aborted foetus seeking revenge on its family. With money issues, union troubles, an angry Hollywood Scream Queen and even a circumcision to overcome, we follow Craig’s nail-biting rollercoaster production...

I first saw Red Christmas at Fantasia in 2016, and then again in September 2017 at the Horrible Imaginings Film Festival. Star Dee Wallace (Cujo, E.T.) was in attendance at both festivals, but it was at Hiff where she gave an impassioned speech about her choices and her role in Red Christmas that cemented her status as a serious badass for me. After a lengthy festival tour, director Craig Anderson's crazy little horror film has come out on blu-ray via Artsploitation. Crafted on a microbudget, this home invasion slasher filmed in Australia took full advantage of the funding and talent there as well as the natural lighting on hand. Wallace stars as a retiring mother who's gathered her children around her in the family home for one last Christmas before...

Artsploitation has delivered the ultimate stocking stuffer with the home video release of the Australian horror film Red Christmas. Veteran television director and actor Craig Anderson makes his feature debut with Red Christmas, combining the banal horror of family gatherings with the issues of abortion, feminism, ethics, religion and privacy, with a blood-splattered twist on what happens when secrets refuse to stay dead. Following a theatrical rollout across the United States, Red Christmas will be available nationwide October 17th on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD, including iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Google Play, Vudu and more.
Genre icon Dee Wallace (The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, E.T., Cujo, Critters) stars in a critically acclaimed role as the stressed-out mother of a squabbling family, gathered together in a remote Outback estate on Christmas Eve. Their petty dramas threaten to blacken the holiday until a mysterious and deformed stranger appears at the door seeking bloody vengeance.

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by Artsploitation Films. Director/writer: Craig Anderson. Cast: Dee Wallace, Sarah Bishop, Geoff Morrell, Janis McGavin and David Collins. Red Christmas is a no-budget horror feature from first time feature film director Craig Anderson. Anderson even admits that most actors were not even paid for their roles, in the film's commentary. Just released by Artsploitation Films, Anderson brings a family tragedy to the screen, with his interesting characters. All of the characters are multi-dimensional here. Though, the film's plot plods slowly along through the film's mid-point. Here, the focus is on dispatching a few of the characters, in gruesome ways. The film tackles a difficult subject, abortion. The message is convoluted thanks to the dark humour. But, the film does show that abortion does have consequences as seen in the film's high body count and disturbing images. Overall, Red Christmas...

Red Christmas is the latest festive horror which has been produced by, and stars, Dee Wallace. The film continues in the traditional bloody footsteps of the Christmas slasher genre, although writer and director Craig Anderson takes a lot of time to really develop the characters, giving the film a bit more depth than just your normal hack and slash.
Red Christmas begins in an abortion clinic, with a woman who is undergoing an abortion. During the procedure a bomb is detonated, causing panic and confusion as everyone tries to evacuate. Acting quickly, the removed foetus is dumped into a biohazard bucket which is kicked aside as everyone begins to leave. Unbeknownst to them the baby is found by the bomber,...

Being a mom during the holidays can make Santa Claus' job look like a holly jolly cakewalk. As the head of a dysfunctional family in Craig Anderson's Red Christmas, Dee Wallace not only has to worry about keeping the peace, she also has to try to keep her family members in one piece when a killer crashes their festivities. With the holiday horror film out now in select theaters, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Wallace about her multifaceted new role, and we also had the chance to reflect on her amazing film career, including the legacy of Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and her experience playing Cynthia Strode in Rob Zombie's Halloween.

You know you’re in trouble when the matriarch of a horror movie is determined to make this “the best Christmas ever.” Australia’s latest genre export is in keeping with the country’s cinematic tradition of brutality, if not necessarily the quality— Craig Anderson’s “Red Christmas” isn’t exactly a lump of coal in your stocking, but neither is it worth waking up early for on the big day.

Offering something to offend viewers from many walks of life, Craig Anderson's Red Christmas uses Jesus' birthday as an occasion for an abortion-themed slasher pic whose boogeyman happens to have Down syndrome. The literal-minded may also take offense at the film, and not just because its Yuletide horrors are being delivered in the dog days of summer. But some horror buffs will appreciate this irreverent little gorefest, especially those with a nostalgic soft spot for topliner Dee Wallace, the scream queen of The Hills Have Eyes and The Howling (not to mention E.T.) who remains impressively prolific even as she...

"It's in the oven, presents in 15 minutes!" Artsploitation Films has debuted the official trailer for a holiday horror movie titled Red Christmas, from writer/director Craig Anderson. The films stars Dee Wallace, who also produced, as a mother who must protect her family on Christmas Day from a demented stranger. The cast includes Geoff Morrell, David Collins, Sarah Bishop, Janis McGavin, Gerard Odwyer, and Sam Campbell. This looks more like an awkward comedic Christmas version of You're Next than the other holiday horror Krampus. The final kill from this trailer is totally gnarly, not sure if that's a good thing. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Craig Anderson's Red Christmas, direct from YouTube: A mother (Dee Wallace) must protect her family on Christmas Day from a demented stranger who is hell-bent on tearing them apart.
